ABOUT THIS VIDEO
Marshall McDonald’s arrangement of this beautiful hymn/folk song has been a favorite in the LDS community for years. He wrote this full-orchestra version for our album The Master in 2014. In the Fall of 2016, we were preparing to perform it at the Tabernacle on Temple Square when one of our orchestra students, Joseph, came up to me after rehearsal. He said, “I’m so grateful that we are playing this arrangement on this concert. I played the cello and piano version at my father’s funeral last month.” My heart sank. This particular orchestra member drove more than 2 hours in each direction to attend our weekly rehearsals. I had met his father many times as they made the weekly seven-hour trip to be a part of our group. His father was one of the most supportive, engaged parents I have encountered. He would do anything to help Joseph including weekly 7-hour trips for orchestra, remarkable family sacrifices to get Joseph a new cello and tuba. Hours and hours of driving, saving, and sacrificing for his son. I knew he had passed away suddenly from cancer over the summer, but when I heard that my seventeen-year-old student had played this same song at his father’s funeral, I was unprepared for the emotional wave of empathy I felt for this young man. I thought of how this music seemed to thin the veil between the living and those who have passed on. How music, like prayer, communicates the inexpressible and bittersweet and connects us to those we cannot see but still feel. This year, I think Easter will feel differently for that family. Who among us has not tasted the bitterness of losing one we love and not longed for comfort? If this music and the message we tried to convey with our high school aged students and shoe-string budget, comforts one “Joseph” out there who is struggling then it was more than worth our humble efforts.
“Blessed are they that mourn; for they shall be comforted” - Matthew 5:4
“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; for there shall be no more death, neither sorrow” Revelations 21:4
"Oh, how we cried the day you left us. We gathered round your grave to grieve, but I wish I could see the angels faces when they hear your sweet voice sing. And when in pain, from sorrow's anger. I'll Fall to my knees and plead that day, then feel your hand, rest on my shoulder, and hear the words you have to say." - adapted by Joseph Henderson from "Go Rest High"
Lyrics
1. If you could hie to Kolob
In the twinkling of an eye,
And then continue onward
With that same speed to fly,
Do you think that you could ever,
Through all eternity,
Find out the generation
Where Gods began to be?
2. Or see the grand beginning,
Where space did not extend?
Or view the last creation,
Where Gods and matter end?
Methinks the Spirit whispers,
“No man has found ‘pure space,’
Nor seen the outside curtains,
Where nothing has a place.”
3. The works of God continue,
And worlds and lives abound;
Improvement and progression
Have one eternal round.
There is no end to matter;
There is no end to space;
There is no end to spirit;
There is no end to race.
4. There is no end to virtue;
There is no end to might;
There is no end to wisdom;
There is no end to light.
There is no end to union;
There is no end to youth;
There is no end to priesthood;
There is no end to truth.
5. There is no end to glory;
There is no end to love;
There is no end to being;
There is no death above.
There is no end to glory;
There is no end to love;
There is no end to being;
There is no death above.
Text: William W. Phelps, 1792-1872
To see and hear these young men and women play with such passion and grace fills my heart with joy and gives me great hope for the future!
💖 I agree!
This video was inspired by a member of our orchestra who lost his father that year due to cancer. The students all really, REALLY wanted to do something to comfort him.
This day started terribly. First hour at work I put my headphones and listened to this. Now I've prayed and I feel much better. Thank you.
My wife and I are 82, She is in last stages of alzheimer's and I am close to leaving this earth. We look forward with hope of being together forever. We were sealed in the Holy Temple in Salt Lake City, what a joy we have with the Restoration of the Church with the Fulness of the Gospel. I was a former Baptist Minister, I was blind but now I see. Thank you.
Thank you! LOVE to you and your amazing wife.
Really?!?! Is this the appropriate place for Mormon propaganda? How about praising the brilliant musicianship and tremendous hard work exhibited by these students.
My sincerest sympathies and best wishes for your wife. But, like too many geezers, it's obvious that, in your world, it's all about you--and you should be ashamed for using your wife's struggles to elicit sympathy. Celebrate your faith. Stand on the promises of God. Leave the propaganda at the church (temple) door.
@@randellfranklynbusby2334 Well i don't think of myself as a geezer and I take good care of my wife as I love her and look forward to spending eternity with her. But you will be a geezer soon enough as it happens to us all if we live long enough. I am the Seminole Ward organist and have been for 51 years, the 1st hymn I play as prelude for Sacrament meeting every Sunday is "If You Could High To Kolob" I love it and yes I feel the love and faith that is written therein, Thank you for your reply. but I never need anyone's sympathy I work for all I have and am able to do with Gods help. My wife is a total invalid and I cut her hair, clean and cut her fingernails and toenails and will do whatever she needs if the nursing home doesn't do it. Love you all
@@randellfranklynbusby2334 Despicable comment. Grow up you absolute buffoon. 🤡

5:56 One of my favorite LDS hymns. Absolutely beautiful version here! Sounds from Heaven!
This is by far the greatest version of this beautiful hymn, thanks to all who made this possible.
I love how this video shows how music can be such a comfort to us and how music often says more than words.
This is my favorite hymn. Ever.
Eliza Dalton that's what is all about. Love music more and it will always love you back
We can all return to live with our father in Heaven. Beautiful piece and beautiful video. so grateful I'm able to be in this orchestra ❤️
McKenna Taylor you are so amazing!
McKenna Taylor If you're in the orchestra, is that you at the front right at 0:15?
And with Mother in heaven!
Words can not express how grateful I am to have heard this.
I heard and sang this song for the first time while serving a LDS mission in Ontario Canada more than 30 years ago and still brings me to tears today.
Wow. Amazing. I wish I could play music and bring that peace and joy to others
This orchestra is absolutely outstanding!
Actually, most of them are “outsitting.” 😉
I think that this one of the most absolutely beautifull songs I have ever heard I just absualutley love the stories that music can truly bring too life .
I can only imagine our Savior standing among all of you.... For he loved the world so much he gave all of you a gift to share with your music:)
love it! it is so inspiring to hear one of my favorite songs played by this beautiful orchestra of teenagers who love the Lord
Thank you! Where are you from? It's amazing to us that this is reaching all over the world!
Gorgeous!! So thankful to have been a part of this. There is no end to God's love for us. You feel it when you listen to this song!!
Couldn't have done it without you. It was a great weekend! Thank you!!!
Beautiful. Thank you, students, teachers, and supporters of this music program.
how comforting it is to know that we will live again, and our loved ones will also live again❤ love this orchestra, love this video, love this song, love this gospel
Some great shots of you in this one!
All! All of us. The Atonement is Infinite, and Ultimate.

This is so amazing! Thanks so much for the opportunity to be in this marvelous orchestra!
I loved making this video with of the other instrumentalists in this orchestra. Thanks for the amazing opportunity Kayson! Also, that recording retreat was a blast:)
I love this song and the spirit it brings! filming this was such an amazing experience!
After a long day plus studying past midnight, I was notified that this video was out. This was just what I needed to end my day with some needed comfort. I love the message that no matter what trials others or I am going through, Christ is always there for me if I ask for him.
This song enlarges my testimony and increases my faith, It was my son's favorite hymn.
thank you for sharing. We hope this can help us all to be a little closer to those we feel but no longer can see.
I love that even though people can't see all the work and spiritual preparation that go into these recordings, the Spirit that comes with watching this video is definite and powerful.
especially when the timpani swells! just moves something deep inside
Incredibly....Amazingly BEAUTIFUL!!!
THANK YOU for sharing your talents with the World!!!
whoever dislikes this video doesnt know what beautiful music sounds like or is probably just hating..this is so beautiful..got goosebumps watching this..im a Ghanaian violinist and a mormon and trust me ive never seen an orchestra play anything this beautiful. God bless you all for coming up with this lovely rendition of this song
thank you! I was a little puzzled about who would take the time to dislike youth trying to inspire others. I guess there are always those who don't care for religious messages. Hopefully, it reaches those who need it most. That's all we care about!
Most beautiful.
Delightful
It went straight into my soul ❤️
thank you! This video was really touching for us to make!
Absolutely gorgeously done! I gotta say, I half expected you to “Hie to Kolob” for this video’s scenery. You were almost there in the “What a Wonderful World“ video!
yeah the Salt Flats felt pretty other-worldly. We filmed this video years ago and I'm still cleaning salt off of the chairs :-)
I just keep coming back to watch it again. It's so good. ❤️
That's the hope! I love that on UA-cam it's just always there when you need it. I hope that years from now you'll do the same.
such a breathtaking arrangement of an inspiring hymn :)
wow, this video is very inspiring. Nice to see young kids producing such beautiful music.
As a fellow musician I should be judging but I have found it very hard they blend there sound to make it as one, how musical they play it moves you. What a outstanding orchestra this is. The piece they are playing is beautiful if I where a judge I would be giving them a superior.
Mark Heward THANK YOU! These youth really feel this music. It's not easy or dumbed down rep but they have good reasons to give their best.
This music is absolutely wonderful! Especially when doing scripture study, or school assignments.
So beautiful. You are all so talented.
Rand is my brother and this music and written words are a beautiful gift. Thank you all - and especially Joseph!
Dawn Mosley we are so moved by his life and sacrifice. Joseph was lucky to have a father and example like Rand. we are so grateful that you feel this is a worthy gift for the family. We certainly think a lot of Joseph
thanks for a song beautiful. I feel the spirit of god in my heart.
This is my favorite arrangement of this hymn! I consider myself lucky to be apart of this orchestra.
we feel the same about you!!!!
Thank you for what you are doing. God bless you!
Beautiful hymn. This calms me. It restores my soul with peace and quiet. I love all of the musicians especially the sound of violin. God bless them
This recording brought me to tears as the spirit flooded over me.
That's what we're hoping for. To play it, you almost can't help but feel the Spirit.
I really do love this song
so incredibly blessed to be a part of this, and to be a part of this gospel.
It was such an amazing experience to film this!
Beautiful! Nice work Kayson and the whole Lyceum Orchestra!
I love the message that this song brings
love it! great work!
A beautiful arrangement and inspiring performance by a Youth Orchestra, probably with many active Latter-day Saints -- hope that you enjoy the music and video. As for me, I enjoyed listening to the thrilling sound and the wonderful visual photography.
So glad you found us! This piece was dedicated to a student in the orchestra who lost his father just a few weeks before. It was one of the most emotional and moving experiences we've had. So glad at least some of it came through!
Is this a Mormon school? If not, why the Mormon propaganda?
@@randellfranklynbusby2334 Of course, it's not strictly a Mormon school. I was just making the guess that many are probably Latter-day Saints -- given the demographics of the region. Whether or not this is propaganda, is subject to interpretation.
Sooo beautiful! This song brings me so much comfort.
I love the shots of you. You just seem so noble while you play. There's a presence in your playing that draws me in. Thank you!
I love this song and this arrangement! The video is beautiful and I'm so glad I was able to be apart of it!
you sould listen the version of steve sharp nelson ♥
Filming this video was an incredible experience. I'm always blown away by the opportunities this orchestra has provided me 🙏🐐
I love the look on your face while you're playing.
I second your observation.
Honestly, this was a pretty difficult recording process, but WOW it was totally worth it! This song brings the spirit so fast. Love it.
yeah...flooded salt flats, slow buses, but the sky was something special!
I really enjoyed recording this piece particularly, not just because of the sweet picture I got of all the double basses standing up on their own in the soft ground, but also because of the flood of inspiration that comes when I see the beautiful location mixed with the beautiful music.
Both awesome reasons! You'll have to share the pic. I want a copy!

incredible sky! watching the sunset while you played was something we'll never get in a concert hall. it was just heavenly
Love this arrangement!! You young people are so talented.
This group is outstanding! One of the most beloved hymns ever. William W. Phelps wrote the lyrics to this beautiful hymn. Thought provoking. His history is amazing. His accomplishments in this life were exemplary.
I love this music it's so inspirational, greetings from Mexico
I love this song! Its beautiful! :)
Your harp playing is so elegant. Sorry to drag your beautiful instrument out in the middle of a flooded salt flat, hope it was worth it!
beautiful music
Wow! I love the music you guys make!
The music ans the salt flats are so pretty!! I love getting to be a part of such cool videos!
I love the drone shots of the sunset. Plus you all look so into it. Let's hope it keeps making the rounds online

Love this!
What a gorgeous place to play one of the best hymns! Playing in this orchestra is the highlight of my week :)
We feel the same about you!
This is beautiful! This group of kids are an inspiration. Thank you for blessing others with your talent!
wow.
I just loved those French horns ❤️
The salty pants were well worth it for this!
Pretty sure I still have salt on my endpin, but it was worth the experience! Awesome result!
Matthew Huff all hardcore cellists dip their endpins in salt. part of a sacrificial intonation ritual :-)
Beautiful English theme named after a hamlet a few miles from my home.
Pretty sure I still have salt on my shoes from filming this haha :) Such an awesome experience
Can't believe you are leaving us! You'll always have the suspended rolls in like every video we did this year!
We cannot understand what we cannot see... Maybe music makes us understand better... Then we can see.... I saw my father... When I was 69 years old... Sitting in an old cast iron bathtub in Roanoke Virginia... And I looked... And there was my father standing in front of me... Just as he had been in real life... I went to church the best day... And asked one of the elders what was that about... How did I see my father surreal Standing before me he had been dead for 10 years... And he said don't you know that bring him young said that... No one ever really dies... All are waiting for the resurrection or the millennium...
Your video is much truer to the main Mormon migration than the standard depictions of the handcarts which came later. Very moving and well done.
Favorite hymn and they hardly ever play/sing it!
Don't forget to give credit to the composer of Dives and Lazarus, the original creator of this tune, Ralph Vaughn Williams...
sdkfz222 Vaughn Williams adapted the folk tune. It's also known as Kingsfold. he certainly made it popular but did not compose it. :-)
True, however this tune likely wouldn't be known to the LDS community without Vaughn Williams' & W. W> Phelps' work. Just seems like they deserve a mention, in my opinion.
@@LyceumPhilharmonic
Kingsfold.
@@LyceumPhilharmonic
RVW certainly composed 'Five Variants of Dives and Lazarus' which as the name implies is based on the English folk tune.
@@Wotsitorlabart Totally, and we love performing that work. It's actually the first video I ever made (on a different channel). We just didn't credit RVW on this video because this version is based on the original folk tune and has original melodies. While I think every modern version of this folk song is influenced to some degree by the brilliant RVW, it isn't his music so to put his name on it would not be fair to him. Hope you enjoy it. It's maybe the only full orchestra version I'm aware of!
Also, who is that Clarinet playing in the background at 3:30? Looks like a total weirdo
Joseph Wride coolest wierdo ever

The Moroni Christian Gospel. A new revelation of Jesus Christ adding to the Word of God with a new spirit and new dimension of faith outside of the Original Biblical Revelation.
Historians say that Joseph Smith forgave his bitter enemy William Phelps who wrote the lyrics.
Shame to see beautiful musical talent wasted on LDS delusions. #kolobheresy
