I wanted to make a margharreta pizza, but didn't have any basil, so I bought some sweet basil from the farmers market. I used the big leaves and left the main stem and the baby leaves at the top and dropped the stem in water. In a couple of weeks, the stem rooted and I was able to plant it. I now have a big bushy basil plant. :)

Made my first pesto from the garden today! Yum. OK... I had been ignoring the basil, except for pulling off the flowers. So there were small leaves, woody stems, etc. I decided to use what I picked, anyway... the pesto was awesome. I will plant more basil now and take better care of the two plants I have in the meantime.

The Mrs. harvests our surplus basil and puts it in a blender with some walnuts and, I'm not sure but maybe olive oil, then puts the paste in ice cube trays to freeze. Then she ziplocks the cubes and stores them in the freezer. We have fresh pesto all winter. Yes, walnut seeds taste almost the same as pine nuts in pesto but cost much less.

So helpful! My basil is turning yellow from the heat I think. It hasn’t flowered yet but the flavor has changed and it’s been yellow for a few weeks. Will pruning and watering revive the new leaves or will the plant never taste the same again? Starting more seeds in case I can’t fix it.

lemisanthrope I thought I was overwatering so I stopped watering at all and it got worse. So then I started pruning and it didn’t really help either. I fertilize it and it’s in compost. It’s been over 90F for a few weeks and over 100F for a few days here in Maryland which is why I was thinking it was the heat. It’s tough because yellowing leaves can mean a lot of different things.

I have found my basil in pots don’t do so well in a short amount of time. I live in Florida, and it is hot and rainy. So, I have an elevated self-watering planter that I love. I wish I had bought two of them when on sale. It is not available now (even at full price). It has the whole microbiology going on in it with worms happily living even in the hot weather (the moistness is always maintained). I had a couple of stressed basil plants that were yellowing, even adding nutrients like nitrogen didn’t help. As soon as I put it into the planter, it got better. Whatever the microbiology is in there works!

Deirdre Berger interesting! I have my sweet basil in the raised beds with compost and worm castings and it’s the one that is yellowing. But I also have basil that is not yellowing in a big pot-the thing is it’s a different variety it’s purple opal basil. Maybe I just need to give it a more consistent watering and more worm castings? Both my basil started from seed and the basil I bought from the store are yellowing in the same way so I know it’s something wrong with the conditions.

Jeannette V Hmmm...I was also wondering if my potted basil had something going on that I couldn’t see. I do know the good soil and even watering makes for strong plants. I have also had to do the whole neem oil and peppermint treatments about every four days! I don’t make it strong, sort of weak. The whiteflies and bugs are bad here unless I do it. It is not like I have a ton of plants, but I want to take care of what I have. Also, as Gary has warned about yellowing leaves from unfinished compost. Everyone is eager to use their compost, but if it is unfinished it can cause more problems.

Thanks for the INSIGHTFUL tip about transplants. I have purchased several this year and they were all disgustingly bitter and died before I could even repot them.
Question: If the basil plant goes to seed and is bitter... can you plant the seeds from the "bitter basil" and get "Sweet Basil" again???

If you feel you have to cut basil to make it bushier but don’t need basil, just pop the stem into some small container with water. It will grow roots in about a week to ten days. For me, I have found keeping the cuttings on a covered patio works best. Maybe a little light gets to it? Not sure. It doesn’t work as well indoors on a kitchen counter. So, maybe outdoors there is some reflected ambient light. When you see roots, then you can transplant it into soil. I have done this a lot.

i believe i burned my container herbs with too much fish emulsion that wasn't properly diluted enough for a foliar feed. the oregano and thyme look like they've died, but the mint, basil and lemongrass bounced back. after a hard prune the thyme is slowly showing new growth, but the oregano is still a bunch of little dry twigs after the hard prune. :(
