Starting today I will upload weekly videos again! Since the arrival of my grand piano has been delayed indefinitely, I will record new arrangements on my Stage Piano instead for the meanwhile. It also features a lightning system, which will change colors and intensity, depending on the mood of the song. I hope you like this current setup!
With that said, let’s move on to Homura「炎」, the Theme Song of the Demon Slayer Movie Mugen Train!『無限列車』. At first I couldn’t believe that Yuki Kajiura was actually the composer of this song, because it sounds very different compared to her usual musical style (lol). But the chorus of Homura is - in my opinion - the single most catchy melody I have heard for a long time. Once you hear it, you can never stop humming this melody.
Arranging a slow-paced song on the piano is always a big challenge for me because there is always a thin line between “boring sound” and "excessive arranging”. I usually try out multiple arrangement versions on the piano until I find the “perfect version” and the more I practice, the more techniques are being added to the arrangement.
However, at one point I realized that I included too many ornaments and they are “distracting” Homura from its main melody. I cut out many unnecessary notes and tried to focus more on dynamic difference between each part. (Still, I wish I could use some kind of vibrato on piano keys to imitate LiSA’s fantastic vocal performance but unfortunately, the piano is not made for that.)
I have also watched the Demon Slayer movie while it was airing in Japan and the animation studio Ufotable has outdone themselves again with the fantastic animation. No words about the story though, because the movie hasn’t aired in many countries yet and I don't want to spoil it. I am pretty sure the reason why this movie broke all movie records in Japan is because many people are watching it several times over and over again- because the animation is just so damn satisfying to watch (lol)

I can see your future my young comedian, so bright, so fruitful
I don't know if you will end up reading this but you Animenz inspired me to play piano. Regardless how I grew up with having FAS(Fetal Achohol syndrome) I still tried my best to play piano. I was always behind in my classes when I was growing up. I still tried. I one day saw your videos and saw how amazing your piano performances were. I was inspired so much that I even bought a 88 key digital piano. One day I was saddened that I couldn't play that much songs at all. I for sure had trouble learning but I didn't want my disablilty to stop me. I continued on through out my life growing up, and in time I got better at it so much.
Finally I asked to play at one concert and when I did, everybody was so amazed how good I was. That was in my own community, I continued to do so too. I kept being told I inspired others. I heard many people wanted to play piano because of me, even families that had kids. Sometimes I play piano for others, and they love it alot.
I mostly do improvisations mostly, but
anyways I'm thankful to you animenz for inspiring me to play the piano. 🙂👍
Keep it going. Dont stop playing. Animenz also inspired me to continue playing piano. I started playing really young however, later on because of exams and sports I started to like the piano less and less. This was only because day after day I would practice to compete in classical competitions and exams which i was not a fan off. However, I was a big anime fan and one day I saw Animenz vids and he inspired me to try a new way of playing the piano. Now I practice ur pieces and I love them. Keep up the work Animenz its amazing!

The most impressive thing here is how he switches from melody to harmony with both of his hands. It's just impressive as hell.

The only piano performance that does Homura justice! (I like cateen's too but somehow it doesn't hit the spot for me)

An earlier arrangement version has even arpeggios mixed in for the final chorus in 3:30 but I omitted it because the sound was powerful enough already!
I don't know how you didn't spotted on cateen's playing, maybe it's about reference. It's the opposite for me, at least imo 😆

the m o o d lighting really takes this cover to another level 🔥. i really like the fiery color palette you chose for this one. Combined with the lovely music, it really creates such an immersive atmosphere for this cover.
I applaud the decision to create a more stripped version without the usual volume of embellishments. It really allows the melody to resonate and shine through fully. Also, even on a stage piano, the wonderful preset combined with the signature Animenz touch makes it feel not too different than the usual Steinway grand sound. That being said, i hope you're able to get the grand back and set up soon! Til then, i'm looking forward to whatever you bring us next 🙂

Yamaha and Steinway keyboard action response quite different though. And also the tonal quality from both the brands generally.
@JoanKSX yeah the Yamaha can be a bit more aggressive but the voicing makes a huge difference. My C6 sounds just like a model B but the action feels crispier

I just realised Animenz did the last part blind, and you can tell by the way he feels the next chords with his fingers before actually moving his hands for it, as when you play blind you tend to keep your hands lower to the keys and move across rather than lifting completely, and it seems he did this from 4:30 , I'm actually so happy I noticed this😂

ayy rly good job! still didnt watched the movie, but i will do when i get the chance, homura has indeed a catchy melody especially with lisas voice, rly nice arrangement i like that you focused a lot on the dynamics than just putting a lot of additional melodies.

It was because for piano class, I would just play piano books and they weren't even the ones that I would actually like (Turkish Dance, Brahm's Hungarian Dance No. 5, Moonlight Sonata, etc) and after rewatching NGE (I didn't really like it) but the OP was so nostaligic that I looked it up and found you and now here I am learning way more and I am now working on ear training to play by ear. I'm so impressed how quickly and well you adjusted to your electric! The sound on the Steinway was definitely warmer, where I feel this one is more bright; but then you took advantage of that and somehow made your sound even cleaner! Your touch is genuinely amazing, I love how you could highlight the percussive parts of the piece and I'm so glad you're doing weekly uploads again!
