We played for 3 months without a sound guy. The keyboard player did all the mixing. From the stage. I came to appreciate what a dedicated sound guy does for the overall sound of the band. Hats off to you man. These videos bring both good and bad memories flooding back.
Hope you have had a happy Christmas and hope you have a great 2025 Chris! Most of the bands were great and it’s a shame how they treated the venues equipment and the parents coming up to complain about things but great mix and super glad to hear about the tour too! Hope you enjoy it 🎉
The olives shoutout cracked me up. It’s not a bad venue at all, just a small very local spot in Nyack. It really is what the band makes of it. The tech is minimalistic but a surprisingly great sounding room!
@@chrishammillaudioi personally just installed a new X32 and subwoofer for them last week. they’re trying to be more legit for 2025. but yeah no reason to say that shit on mic literally nobody cares or even understands the context.
Was there for the gig. It’s not about the venue as much as it was about the owner. She was rude, disrespectful, excluded some people from coming yet allowed others, and made a big stink about the volume… of a metal band. Overall it wound up sounding like crap bc the guitarists weren’t audible at all.
the lady’s got dementia dude idk what to tell you her son is doing his best to try and turn the place around, i would give them another fair shake in the new year. i myself have had plenty of bizarre experiences there but there are literally zero other venues to play in rockland. i’ve been playing the place since i was 13 (11 years now) and it’s always been the same grimey dive bar, so it’s nice that they’re doing their best to try and make it better for artists
@@antonioscalcione7921 Everybody I know that plays regularly in Rockland has their own chaotic Olive’s story but I see it as a really important part of the local scene. My favorite time playing there we booked the whole bill and were very much left to our own devices. Set and forget on the board with the bands doing basic vocal rides for each other. Was a great night.
If a musician were to smash my mics during the show, I would send the bill to a musician to buy a new set of microphones. :) Great job despite having to rush the sound check.
I once had a parent telling me (aftershow) that they couldn't hear their kid singing. And since she was recording this, I was presented with video proof. You guessed it, vocals were loud and clear on the recording. Lady was gone in 10 seconds after hitting "play", leaving me confused
Hi chris.thanks for all the cool shows.living in cape town , dingbats reminds me so much of some of the venues here. The band you are touring with are lucky to have you.i am sure they will learn alot from you. I think being set up in a venue and touring are 2 totally different beasts. I might be touring with a band in the new year.doing merch, social media, and photos etc. Looking forward to it. Hope you have a great festive season and am sure tge new year will be good to you. You deserve it. Much love. Mike.cape town south africa.
My boss used to do shows for a comedian, I forget who it was unfortunately, but part of his routine included slamming the mic on stage a couple of times. Before the show, however, the comedian would buy 4 brand new SM58s, smash them on stage, and then let my boss keep them. If you're gonna be reckless and destroy equipment, it damn well better be your own
It hurts me to see people tell you how to do your job. You need one of those signs that says "Karens are not tolerated here". I am a sound engineer myself and was doing g a gig for a large band the other day when the exact same thing happened to me. A parent told me she couldn't hear a lead gituarist in the main mix and actually tired to reach her hand over me and adjust the issue herself. I swear, are people that fucking stupid? Seriously, if you are one of those people, leave the sound guys alone and let them do their job. As Chris once said "We don't come up and tell you how to do our job, so don't tell us how to do ours." And please especially don't reach over the sound guy and fix the problem yourself. You could get the sound guy fired for that. As for breaking equipment, that's just unacceptable. I would've pulled him aside and had a serious intervention about his attitude and behavior. Because I feel bad for you, I'm going to subscribe on my main channel, The Ryder Center. Have fun mixing on traveling show! -Love, Jackson Scott Allen
Lmao the guy talked shit about another venue then proceeded to bash the shit out of your SM58? Its probably bc they got banned from the other venue for doing the same shit. If youre going to bash gear, bash your own gear! A 58 is not super expensive, and hell you can get a super cheap version for like $20. Seriously, thats how you get blacklisted from playing at a venue...
Happy New year Chris, thanks for another great insight, pits and all. The guy would have been wearing that mic, if it was mine, none the less i thought the vocals were spot on, always for me the hardest thing to get right. Looking forward to the rest of your tour cobber, by the the way find some time to keep them Sheila's happy.
Hey Chris, hope your new year is good :) - I'm a huge fan of your channel, and your mixdown meltdown videos are the primary reason why I have been getting into sound tech, you're really an inspiration. Just wondered if you have any recommendations for a 10, or 12 channel mixer that could be used in a home setup (rehearsal/production). Right now I'm really looking into the Mackie ProFXv3 series- think could possibly be the way to go? Let me know if you have any suggestions :)
Venues should have a contract element that a deduction from their pay could come from abuse of venue gear. Hoping to hear some good bands tonight on NYE out here in Lititz PA. Numerous venues happening tonight.
Happy New Year brother! I appreciate the work you do and the knowledge you share. I'm the type of person that loves to learn from others mistakes so I don't have to make them, so I appreciate all the mistakes you show😂😂!! Be safe out there!
it was very noticable of how mad you were to the people im not gonna lie it is a pet peve when a person starts yapping about how to do your job or start touching stuff they are not soposed to.
Don't tell me how to do my job and I won't get mad. I don't know why parents seem to think that sound guys can be told how to do their job when the parents wouldn't know what any knobs or faders do.
Don't quite know if they got payed because of that can complicate things or easier BUT smashing my gear is one hell of a show stopper. You get one warning and you get a bill even if it is only for time spent investigating possible damage. Parents in the sound booth complaining goes the same. One warning and you are (unvoluntarily) removed. That behavior needs to be stopped immediately as it will only get worse. Speaking from experience. And if tgey don't comply, the venue owner should ban them.
Attendees offering “advice” is just gonna happen. If they’re polite and not belligerent, just touch a few knobs, smile at them and move on. You don’t want the reputation of being the difficult sound guy. He’s also the unemployed sound guy.
@SeattleSam-ul5hr Like Chris said: I don't come to your job to tell you how to do it. If they are nice, they get somewhere around your approach. If they are total dicks, which parents, boy/girlfriends and so on from the "talent" usually are, well then...
I just had a Wing Compact shipped out to me today! Love your videos! They are eye opening. Love the perspective as i am starting my journey into FOH mixing for bands. I was normally mixing for DJ's and club events but am expanding out further for my buisness and these streams are extremely helpful and no BS. Thansk and keep them coming! Happy New Year!

I think I could see steam coming out of your ears a couple time there...
you need an 'I don't do requests' sign to put up once its curtain-up. Maybe a nice brass/gold chain to drape behind your booth.

What do you do in instances if bands come in with Fractals or Kempers, etc. and don’t run a cab? Do you just take their DI signal?
Yes, and I pray they don't sound like shit. Most however do.

I use a Tascam Model 24 for that purpose and it’s pretty solid. It’s my primary recording interface.
3:43 Phrasing!
Are you recording your mix straight from the board?
Yes
@ Just thinking about it, maybe the vocals are louder in the recording because of amp volume and such in the room? Seems likely to me
That’s one of the reasons, yes. My mix you hear is the FOH PA mix.
@ Noted, good work out there man. Hopefully you got paid well for that bullshit. You really got hit with every trick in the book
What the name of the band that was playing decode by paramore? I loved the girls voice.
Miami In Milan
That 2nd band was pretty dope.

Enjoy. I'm celebrating with my dad for his birthday so I'm away from all music related stuff.
That singer is lucky the mic didn't "mysteriously" stop working when he smashed it...
Of course *that* would be unprofessional 😉
I would never in a million years suddenly mute the monitors. Nope. Not me.
