A great tool for gardening I use the saw on the back a lot and was amazed that it actually worked . I had years worth of pruning that hadn't been done and it turned into a true all in one tool . The saw was quite impressive with what it could cut thru with ease and it doesn't require gas or electricity .

Lol as somebody who kinda doesn’t know how to use many power tools for yard work without destroying the property,
I substituted using the weed whacker with one of these to chop the tall grass in corners I couldn’t get with the mower.
I’ve got small hands, so the lanyard was of zero use to me, i ended up creating a makeshift finger guard by braiding a rope through the handle and tying it on with the right size for my hand.
Now I’ll never drop it unless i want to, and my hand will never slip.
    That being said,
I DID end up with a dull blade after about an hour of use,
And i was just cutting tall blades of grass and cardboard.
It still hacks…. Just not as smoothly as it should.
It more chunks and hunks, rather than hacks and slashes.
Definitely a blade that needs to be sharpened for use.
    Doesn’t retain useable form.
But, if you have any use for stabbing something and sawing upward into the stab, then his thing is a MONSTER.
Alot of machetes dont have a tip.
This one does, and its quite sharp…
    Combine that with the saw….
As silly as it sounds, this thing is almost more useable as a short broadsword or a dao than it is as a machete.
    Slasher villains would love it.

Good video bud. I'm suprised you didn't get on with it bud. I have had the full length one for about 4 or 5 years I think. I bought mine at the sporting gun gamefair whenever that was. I have put mine through hell with what I have done with it and it has never let me down. I have even used mine for, hedge laying, ride cutting and hide building. I've even taken a couple of silly chunks out of myself whilst not concentrating lol. I find the saw awesome and easy to use. Not to be awkward but, I used mine straight from the box and have never sharpened mine to this day. Also my colleagues who have used it while helping me with said jobs will tell you how they like it as well lol. I have several other machetes and the gerber is my fav. obviously not being able to mele the back of the blade is a disadvantage but otherwise I rate mine very highly. As I say it's a shame you didn't get on with yours. still a good video keep up the good work cheers.

Nicely balanced, good tool for small to medium size jobs
It’s also part of my bug out / survival bag.

If you are relying on this machete for survival, you are in deep sheet. It's like a toy.

No worries bud. There's no doubt there are cheaper ones out there lol. Think I was lucky as I got my full size one on a show deal. I'll have to check with the Mrs but I think I got mine for £15 at the sporting gun game fair lol. def haven't regretted getting it. My dogs even chewed off the rubberised grip and it's still awesome lol. Hope alls well cheers. Are you going to the northern shooting show in Harrowgate in may? If so please come say hi and have a brew I'm running the pass it in young sports stand all weekend for Rob. take care cheers

I actually lol when I heard your British accent. The part about using the lanyard as a scabbard is thoughtful!

Can you buy the full size version and review that or at least show it off? That would be cool.

***** I just like full size machetes so I was wondering if you'd buy one but your choice.

Glad to see the review. I figure I influenced it partly.
I'll stick to my opinion. Saw backs are a gimmick. If it's small enough to consider sawing through just chop it, the saw creates weak points where a blade will crack from and they make it useless for batoning. The blade edge is the wrong profile, it should be a convex grind and not a concave grind on a machete. Not full tang? Why not?
To answer the question of "is the gerber gator a good machete for the money?" The answer is NO when you consider the Ontario or Tramontina machete which costs less, aren't made in a china sweatshop, are made out of quality materials, full tang and no sawback. If you need a saw, buy a saw. If you need a machete, buy an Ontario or a Tramontina

+MrGixxer666 I'd say I agree with every word! I might give this machete to my Dad and get myself a parang of some sort with a normal spine. Botoning is important.

I really wanted to like this blade too. I bought one for the same reasons you did sort of. The price was decent enough for a cheapo camp tool and I thought it could fill multiple roles. This was before I knew what a good machete was and should be able to do. Just after one camping trip though the blade edge warped very badly with some light chopping duties for kindling and I've never used it since.
Some will say that "machetes aren't made for chopping" or "use the right tool for the right job, get an ax if you want to chop" and I'll argue that an Ontario can fit all of those roles decently. I want a multi purpose tool in my pack, an ax is useless weight to me.

      @srspower  8 років тому +1

MrGixxer666 Yeah the saw also puts me off, botoning is a bit of a deal breaker as I'd like a small machete for jointing rabbits etc as well as chopping wood and foliage.

a large knife. As I hiked more over the years I tend to drop tools as i got better master the situation without any tools. So I ended up with a small axe and a very small knife. That covers all needs. But I like the saw and the size of this machete

I wouldn't use it chop wood but it would be a vital weapon against a burglar attacking my family as the reason I own one. I Live in South Africa so when someone breaks in there is usually intent to rape and murder.
