    I used to live in hopiland 2x. My mom was an RN at the old hospital in Keams Canyon back in 1986. We're Chippewas from Red Lake, MN. We moved away but returned in June of '90. I learned several Hopi words during my time there. Okiwa=Poor thing/pahana=white man/Qwaqhy... Esquali... thank you (male/female). Daha=uncle, Qu-yum-si=Mudhead, uss-ali, unna. My sister met my brother-in-law in Hopi (Hotevilla) They had 5 children together. They spoke Hopi every day and my sister learned how to understand it.

    Question:
    Excuse my misspelling.
    Oy =‘s yes
    Vā =‘s ???
    I say it often and would like to place a meaning to it. After looking up names through Hopi language. Started searching UA-cam for ‘how to speak hopi’. Hence connected to your great video.
    Plus bought a flute last year. Saw your video and WoW.
    I would like to learn to count. To practice the pronunciation of your language.

      I commented on being ostentatious. But most also don't like hearing history on the actual indigenous people to the 4 corners and the land occupation. Who also taught you how to weave and plant. Sheep were from the arrival of the Spanish. Ranching later came from Mexican Vaquero culture. Now the adoption and embracement of Christianity within your tribe promotes inequality and discrimination to your 2Spirit family members.

    The Hopi language is called Tewa

    • @samivayajd
      @samivayajd  6 років тому +6

      Tewa isn't Hopi, they came from the east where their original settlement was and there are three dialects. Tewa, Tiwa and Towa. The ones who settled at first mesa after aiding us in the Pueblo Revolt still speak the old language which is no longer spoken by those in New Mexico.

    • @ivytaylor7459
      @ivytaylor7459 5 років тому +3

      I'm Hopi and my grandfather was Tewa. When the Tewa came to aid us during the Pueblo Revolt they were given land. When the exchange was made a Hopi man and a Tewa man both ate corn kernnels the Hopi chewed his and gave it to the Tewa man to chew. He said this is how you will learn to speak like me. The Tewa ate it and learned to speak Hopi. When it came time for the Tewa to give the Hopi his corn he spit it in the ground where a shrine still stands today. He said we will communicate in your language, a Hopi will not be able to learn our language so I know my people the Tewa will always be protected. This is how it is to this day. My grandfather would speak to me in Tewa all day and I would retain it, then as soon as I went to sleep the slate would be wiped clean. I'd wake up and run to my Te'te and try to speak to him but there would be nothing. So no Tewa and Hopi are different.
