    I... don't... like... this.
    At all.
The implications are *staggering*. Cultural genocide??? Idk.
This isn't the great news some people think it is.

I totally get that. But there ARE disadvantages to being deaf - outside of the culture - that most parents would want to remove if they can.

Ooooh , how come they don’t focus on hearing blind people in first place?

SOUNDS... thats not positive outcome... hearing aids , cochler implants are same things that we cant understand words on the radio... i remain deaf until i go home to heaven

It depends on the accuracy of the sound and how much work you do getting accustomed to it. If the sound is "correct" and not distorted in any way, then he can learn to recognize speech, but it would probably take a while. With my hearing loss, I believe it would still be distorted. Hard to know for sure.

Thank you for providing information about this! I thought that gene therapy isn't allowed to edit the "germline" yet, so it would be nice to know if the DNA of their children would still be the same... We all have to learn more about the ethics and technology!

I don't think all deaf people could be treated. The CDC says that 50-60 percent of deaf babies are deaf due to genetic factors. I don't know if gene therapy would treat all of those.

This feels creepy as eugenics. How long until people are only allowed to participate in work and home ownership based on how close they come to an arbitrary standard meeting sanctioned perfection? [Please someone who can change my oral writing to ASL gloss - re-write this. Thank you]

That link is to a trailer for 1997's GATTACA with the idea that people only wanted perfect babies - and it showed how life was like for "imperfect" people. Yes. Creepy.

Not ASL gloss, but a summary of the concept:
If we do things like gene therapy, someday we will go TOO FAR and imperfect people will be oppressed.

LMAO! I will finally be leaving the deaf world! Jeez! Deaf people have no idea what is isolated deaf community. I'll never want any deaf companies to need improvement, it's failure period.
1 . Deaf subtitles are delayed when it's 100% accessible? (rarely impossible!)
    2. The world is big, and technology moving fastest, and I can't wait for deaf devices to soon stop!"
    3. Sign language interpreters are making for themselves to enjoy a life. When the Deaf need access 24/7. we don't need to rely on them!
    4. I'm tired of seeing and hearing every corner in any street and area, where deaf is distant and hard to find. for example, go to the bar, it's hearing, go to restaurants, it's hearing, go on a train or bus, etc, it's hearing. so I do not see one deaf in every area.
    5. I'm glad hearing developed to cure for deaf is something is really good, thank you!
    6. I do not want to isolate no sounds every day, let sounds in my ear, and relearn and enjoy listening and feel "REBORN!"
    7. I do not like captioning that blocks 100% screen to 80% screen on TV or on a smartphone or tablet.
    8. SOUNDS are the beautiful that GOD created them!
    9. BIBLE does say verse: Isaiah 35:5 (I borrow love the sentence: And when he comes, he will open the eyes of the blind and unplug the ears of the deaf. " New Living Translation", if your bible is different, this link:
    biblehub.com/isaiah/35-5.htm
    let's Deaf REBORN!!!
I had enough of 44 years of deafness let me have another experience of hearing in another 50 more years in my new journey.
I'll want to join to get free for my ear! please!
only 2 ear drops to get the eardrum gene normal, omg that's so hot! I'll join, anyone who reads this, join the fuel!

I'm fine the way I am. The hardest part is not understanding my family. I might want to do it when I get old and am in a nursing home. My mother is deaf and now can't communicate at all, not even in sign language. My deaf sister has A LOT of problems with hearing aids and the skin in her ears. I bet she would want to do it.

I feel you, I'm glad I'm not alone at all, whew ahaha. Hell yeah, I am in for sure.
I fed up with a favistom culture in deaf community and education system as well. So this will end it to toxic culture.

    • @MarleneHen

I disagree. Yes, he needs to do work to learn to understand speech, but in reality, there are disadvantages to being deaf. Also, he already knows Spanish Sign Language and could choose to hang out with Deaf people if he wants.

@@MarleneHen Disadvantage to being deaf?? Really? You encourage more Hearing people to colonize Deaf children, huh? Take Deafhood classes!

    • @MarleneHen

@@bonniesandy9512 Only stating facts. I ran into one problem today. I went to church and the door was locked. I had to push the buzzer and I can't hear anyone on the other end. It causes a delay for Deaf people compared to hearing people.
I don't want to see Deaf culture die, and I probably would never want gene therapy for myself. But there are disadvantages. It's true.
