I can't get density to change anything but the horizontal lines. I get no extra vertical lines to warp the edges...which is ultimately all I care about with a logo on a straight on cylinder.

Make sure you converted the layer into a smart object. Also make sure you click on the layer thumbnail.

Maybe you could try by adding some motion Blur. Filter, Blur, motion Blur.

You can choose any color it doesn't matter. Check on the top left corner.

Check your color mode. Select the RGB color mode
Why is it not multiply? For the effect?
Linear Burn is darker than Multiply and more contrasting. But if you think multiply is better for your design, don't hesitate to use it.
