  • A flying saucer is skimming back and forth over the United States, and finally crash-lands in the ocean. While the entire American military complex scrambles to try and destroy it, the Seaview is more interested in trying to communicate with them. But a visiting admiral whose nickname is "Trigger-Happy" may make it impossible to do so.

This was a very interesting and intelligent episode.Richard Basehart was an extremely talented actor, and the alien here speaks with a strang accent, a lot of other actors wouldn't even think of adding some touch like that to the performance. The saucer was the miniature from the day the Earth stood still and,in an extra on the dvd film historian/ actor -stuntman Bob Burnes showed the miniature retaining the lights added for and mentioned this episode of Voyage to the bottom of the sea.
The only minor quibble here is the crewman who panics, as someone with a claustrophobic tendency would have been weeded out of service in a submarine environment, but it gave the guest chief of the boat a little dramatic scene

You definitely made a BIG point with this episode. If anything out there has ANY intelligence, they'll give us a wide berth as they're bopping around the universe. Maybe put a no landing ban on us.

The sailor that tells the Admiral that Captain Crane is back was Adam Williams, best known as one of the killers pursuing Cary Grant in "North by Northwest", Alfred Hitchcock's 1959 spy thriller. When he wasn't acting, he worked as an FAA crash investigator.

The very first of many "alien" episodes though the rest would come in later seasons. This initial one is surely the most intelligent of all since it treats the alien as non-hostile, a plot point that would almost universally be abandoned in the later such shows. Fans of 20th Century Fox's 1951 film, "The Day The Earth Stood Still" will recognize the flying saucer footage from that film and it appears the spaceship miniature used in this episode was the same one used in the film, albeit modified along the bottom. Another fine early effort from the series and a fair amount more cerebral than future ET themed shows coming in seasons 3 and 4. Another four star review from you as well, Irving! 👍

Kevin Hagen is wearing a Lost in Space style sweater like the one worn by Dr. Smith.
Apropos since he appeared in all four Irwin Allen SciFi TV series.

They act like it's General Zod and his forces, or Brainiac, from the onset. Truthfully, though, I can believe that's how people would react, to this day.

Perfect timing for this episode with all the Chinese Balloon 🎈 incidents the USA is having.

The really funny part about that is, this stuff has been happening for decades. Some dude in Montana happened to spot that one and everybody pooped their pants. Three others came over during the previous administration, and the other stuff has been there since who knows when. The difference is, after that balloon caused such a hullaballoo, we broadened our detection instruments to pick up smaller items, and we discovered what's been happening all along. And by the way, we do it to them, too.

The saucer looks like the one from The Day the Earth Stood Still.

It likely was, just changed along the bottom with the added lights and pop off mini-saucer shuttle.

In the Navy, KP was "Kitchen Patrol". Based on all those 1950s movies, aliens must have regarded humans as a tasty treat.

When they made me work in the kitchen, it was FSA, or the Barge.. Thankfully, no potato peeling. The worst of it was dealing with the lines, and making coffee for the officers, in the morning. Not that I didn't want them to have coffee, I just didn't know how to make it, because I never drink the the stuff. I was last in, in 2010. I haven't made coffee, since.

    Irving...
....I have only watched two of your 'Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea' and I must say...I am enjoying them and your commentaries a great deal, sir.
....You make some great observations. I would really like to hear your commentaries on the Original Star Trek.
That's one of my other favorite Sci-Fi programs.
....Ya know, Irving...you'd think these Aliens would have learned their lesson back when they landed that same saucer in Wash. D.C. back in 1951 If it wasn't for Michael Rennie and Patricia Neal, it really would have been 'The Day the Earth Stood Still'
....You have a good point: IF Another officer..of superior or equal rank...He/She...better have the qualifies to do so.
Because...in an episode of the original Star Trek...a desk jockey admiral takes command of the Enterprise and really screws things up.
....There's a similar episode(s) of 'Seaquest DSV'...where They meet an alien or two and They come back a bit later and kidnaps the Seaquest and crew...takes them to another planet to help them in an Under Their Water War problem.
....If you're a bit like me,( I really think you're better, btw ) I enjoy my Sci-Fi movie/TV show/book. You're view of other programs such as Trek or Seaquest..might be an interesting addition to your list,
Thank you again for an interesting retrospective.

Star Trek is in my list and on the horizon. I've resisted doing it because so many other people already have, but the calls for it keep coming, so I finally gave in and bought it. Stay tuned!

7:35 Don't forget symphony orchestras, too. And comedians. And live theater/musical theater productions. And preachers/pastors during sermons. Don't forget public speakers in general. I could probably go on and on about this if I wanted to.

    • @dwashbur
      @dwashbur  Рік тому +1

I haven't seen too many symphony orchestras face a lot of hostility. When I used to usher for the Stockton Symphony, most of the people didn't care enough to be hostile. They were just there to be seen. All the others though, yeah.

Like this channel. here's the 'issue, sir. The Audio for a TV show neighborhood of 60 years old....is 'Set....( obviously, 'to it's Limit', on our Devices...to hear reasonably) Then....'You... keep piping in, with modern, ear-splitting HOT Audio levels, from your lapel mic. Any chance you could 'normalize, both levels... ( essentially....Yours, 'Down' some) so we don't go from a good level with VTBS, then...blow our heads off, with your rather Striden, painful Db's....??? Just asking. Show is great! Appreciate your 'take', and humor, hosting these episodes.
