Itu dah bersejarah tetapi masih segar dalam ingatan saya kerana ketika itu saya baru berusia tujuh tahun tetapi dah tahu dari mendiang ibubapa saya bahawa Malaysia dah berjaya bawa kembali Piala Thomas.
By 1967,Indonesia were a declining force in world badminton. For the defense of the Thomas Cup Indonesia once again had to recall the veteran Ferry Sonneville who four years earlier had played a pivotal role in Indonesia's hat-trick of Thomas Cup wins from 1958-1964. At the Tokyo Gymnasium Hall,it was Sonneville staring at defeat but fought back to defeat the seemingly invincible Erland Kops in three closely fought sets.That was the turning point as Indonesia finally won 5-4. Three years later Sonneville was recalled as 1959 All England champion Tan Joe Hock was out and couldn't make it to the team. But Sonneville was 36 and had not played badminton competitively for three years since that triumph at Tokyo. And Indonesia paid the price for recalling the fading Sonneville as he was outclassed in straight sets by Yew Cheng Hoe and Tan Aik Huang. It was Aik Huang who put Malaysia 4-1 ahead with just one point needed to win the Thomas Cup. But the home team responded winning the next two singles to narrow the score to 4-3 with Hartono outplaying Cheng Hoe in straight sets and Muljadi too with veteran The Kew San in similar fashion It was 4-3 as 1965 and 1966 All England champions Tan Yee Khan and Ng Boon Bee stepped onto the court to face Muljadi and Agus Susanto.Thet were the favourites and far too superior.But then pandemonium broke as the Indonesian fans became unruly and uncontrollable.The IBF secretary Herbert Schelee had to step in to control the fans which was becoming too unruly.The atmosphere at the Istora Senayan was tense but Schelee fortunately abandoned the rubber set between Boon Bee-Yee Khan and Muljadi l-Susanto.For Indonesia it was a night of shame but in that Challenge Round defeat to Malaysia a young star Nio Hup Liang aka Rudy Hartono would emerge and establish himself as a legend in badminton.
Had it not for the pandemonium which happened at the Istora Senayan 1965 and 1966 All England champions Tan Yee Khan and Ng Boon Bee were poised to score the winning point and claim the Thomas Cup for Malaysia.They were far superior to that of the Indonesian pair of Agus Susanto and Muljadi.But an unfortunate incident prevented them from doing so.
