Track Email Link Clicks in Google Analytics with Google Tag Manager (set up, testing, reporting)

  • You can track email link clicks in Google Analytics to see how your customers and prospects are getting in touch. Here's how to track those email clicks with Google Tag Manager.

    Nice video. Would appreciate if you can do more on google tag manager and ga4. U have a good style of teaching and don't talk too fast. Cheers

      In the meantime, here's a walkthrough on combining multiple GTM triggers into a single "trigger group" for some more advanced GA4 events. This is a personal favorite of mine.

      I might make updated versions at some point this year, but nothing significant has changed and these should still be good.

    When I look in debug view it shows the link_text as (redacted) and the link_url as mailto:(redacted). I understand I can turn this redaction off but the information about PII is so confusing. Any advice here?

      I found this text below from the Google support article here: support.google.com/analytics/answer/13544947?hl=en
      "Data redaction evaluates events before they are collected to find and remove any text it understands as an email address or query parameter key-value pair. After removal of the offending text, data collection proceeds as expected."
      I learned something new today. Thanks for the thoughtful question. I'm going to assume you need to have that data redacted for PII reasons. If that's the case, I'd consider creating individual events for the various email addresses you want to track. This is unwieldy if you have a ton, but should be fine if you have only several.
      Let's see you want to track email link clicks for Bob, Steve, and Marsha. Each would be its own event, with event names like these in your 3 GA4 event tags:
      bob_email_click
      steve_email_click
      marsha_email_click
      The trigger for each would be the individual email link clicks for those 3 folks. Data redaction doesn't affect how the triggers execute in GTM, and they also wouldn't affect your event data since you'd be getting the email info you need through the event name rather than through an event parameter that passes the actual email address.
      I'm curious if that would be a good solution for your case. Good luck.
