He didn't need an engineering degree or training to do this. Too much education can actually spoil you for this kind of work. You start thinking of tolerance, stresses, balance, vibration, fatigue, etc., and before you know it, you rule out such repairs.

Huh, I never thought of this! Awesome! Clutch plates that last for the life of the vehicle and the driver! LIFETIME GUARANTEE! Too bad the guarantee is for the life of the truck and the driver, and not the guy 'rebuilding' the clutches, because in all odds, the old man is going to live a lot longer than anyone in the vehicle using these clutches.
Yeah, instead of forcing the spring to compress with a shim he should've either changed it or tryed to make it open more (and test if it would deform after, of course). And that rusty blade he put in the place of the broken one, I don't know, he cleaned all the blades before, why not clean this one too? In the end he hits the hammer randomly, missing a lot of rivets...
Once change gear and found I had no clutch, had no clue what was wrong, The clutch only had the medal around it all the pads were gone and i thank the rib;s were still there. the parts person said he had never seen anything like that before, As a kid I had no idea how strange it was, was amazing watching his work
I am amazed by his work, but much more amazed by the fact that he still does it at this advanced age and those fine dusts he has breathed in all his life have not afflicted him!
Agreed he's a master of his work. He probably looks ten years older than he is though, certainly the chemicals and dusts would effect him, and there is no pension or free ride over there, it's not even in their mindset, you retire when you can't work any longer, until then you work as much as possible to provide for your family etc.

We used to do this type of work in the USA, but then it became cheaper to buy a new or rebuilt part than to have a mechanic shop do the work, mechanic shops went to using new parts out of warranty and liability reasons. When I started working as a mechanic back in the 70s we would rebuild just about everything but those days are gone.
