This is not an extensive explanation, but many highlights our well-financed (over tax) culture-schools that makes the cost bearable also for less wealthy families (as an example I checked the town I grew up in with ca 4000 inhabitants.
For ca 140 USD dollar equivalent per 6 months, the little town provide teaching by full-time professionals in visual arts, theatre/acting/video-production, dance (modern and traditional) and music (Vocal, bass and electric guitar, violin (classical and traditional), piano, brass ensemble, drums/percussion and accordion (modern, classic and traditional). If families struggle with the 25 USD monthly fee or cost of instruments, there is refund- and loaner programs.
Obviously, bigger towns and cities have many more programs, as they can afford a much larger full- and part-time teaching team. The thing is, talents are spotted. And really big talents will be gifted grants to go to institutions in for example Oslo once a month for advanced teaching and mentoring (one of the reasons why Norway has thrown around world-class classical and jazz/fusion musicians/singers for the last 30 years or so.
I also want to point to a thing pop- and rock music picked up from the folk-music arena back in the 1980's with an example from Bergen. Bergen as a university city has always had a good rock-vibe. Back in the 1980s some dudes started to do "serious electronica". And the rock people welcomed them. Then these electronica/producers opened up for younger fans. "Garage", a famous rock bar since the 1970s open up "open mic" once a month for kids under 18. Studios and producers invited talents into their studios for free in downtime - allowing them to experiment. While also providing information and setting up meetings with "the one that knows much about what you are doing".
Sissel - she had reached national fame in her mid-teens. While still going to school as normal, playing some gigs when her calendar allowed it, receiving all the teaching - now and then being highlighted internationally (pretty much the blueprint for how Angelina Jordan's family has balanced talent vs childhood).
We may agree that this is not the right strategy for those that want to make all the money on the planet. But we are pretty chill about that, since one can live a perfectly happy life by earning "just" a few million USD-equivalents a year too. In a sense, a lot of our artists prefer that since "artistic freedom" and control over their own career is actually something one can buy - by settling with being more than well off instead of being obnoxiously well off (Sissel is an example of this - prioritizing her family while her kids grew up - while still earning more than all of us normal plebs 😀When she needs some pocket money she agrees to sing the "Suite" from Titanic (the movie), duet with Plácido Domingo, Charles Aznavour, José Carreras, Andrea Bocelli, Bryn Terfel, Josh Groban, Neil Sedaka, Mario Frangoulis, Russell Watson, Brian May, Tommy Körberg, Diana Krall, Warren G, Dee Dee Bridgewater or The Chieftains. or she goes to Salt Lake City to do this in front of 30,000 Mormons for a couple of nights:
      ua-cam.com/video/EFe84U__kt8/v-deo.html&ab_channel=TheTabernacleChoiratTempleSquare
(I have been lucky enough to hear her sing both with and without a microphone a number of times. I am an atheist, but her voice deserves the label "god-given". I know professional opera-singers, I stopped being shocked at the amount of sound they can make with a gram of breath 40 years ago (I am still amazed though. And the noise coming out of this now 50+ lady still make inner organs start to physically resonate - listen to her quietly start the first choros with "slow"). I know it sounds like post-processing - but she does the same without a microphone - as if she form standing waves in the air itself. It is very physical).

@@heidifarstadkvalheim4952 I think it would be a little hard not to include Angelina Jordan in the category of "artist-musician" (even though it appears you wish to exclude singers from your definition). Angelina plays at least 4 different instruments and has been writing original material since she was 10 years old (her latest song, 7th Heaven being released a couple days ago). She also apparently shares at least some of her grandmothers artistic abilities and Mery Zamani is a well-respected Impressionist painter.

You are saying her first name correctly. Last name, Kyrkjebø sounds like ...so-sure-ber. She is from Bergen, Norway but lives now in Oslo, Norway. Since pandemic stays with husband on their country acreage or farm north west of Oslo. About an hours drive. She has two grown daughters, Ingrid and Sarah. The song you are listening to is from a new group of songs called her Reflection Album. She traveled to LA to have that large group of songs perfectly reordered. She even had some vinyl records made. I sent for her autographed set. Love it!!!! They are from old songs from all over, especially the US. You are right about that part of the world speaking very good English. Their school children are all taught this from about 9-10 years old. She has been knighted by their king. The youngest ever to recieve this. She has performed with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir in Utah. Look up her song that she sung in 2019, called Slow Down. Everyone cried, including Sissel. Type in her name for a great many UA-cams!!!! She has some terrific ones when younger too. And from the start she is beautiful!!! She is turning 52 this June. This was written June 15, 2021

Wonderful that you found Sissel. She had been a star since the age of 16. Now she has passed 50. She has done alot of classical, with both Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras, she has Norwegian folksongs, she did the Olympic Hymn during the opening of the Olympics at Lillehammer in 1994, in the Titanic movie she did the stunning vocals during the death scenes and the sinking of the ship. The has done three concerts with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and one of my favourites are from one these concerts; "Eg veit i himmelrik ein borg - A Norwegian folksong, so beautiful and angelic.

Her two first albums (1986 & 1987) was the best selling records ever in Norway, passing 500K each (population i Norway at the time; - less than 4 mill.). Unheard of in Norway at the time! All songs in Norwegian language. Her second record, all Christmas songs, was heard all over the place, and of course in ev-er-y shop all over the country for several years at Christmas time. She also starred at a setup of "Sound Of Music" in Norway in 1987.

I have been a fan of Sissel for over 15 years. I have numerous CD's by her when I need a good listen. I too have travelled to Sweden and through parts of Norway but never to Sissel's home town of Bergen. The Norwegians have a very warm, down to earth mindset as demonstrated in Sissel's singing presentation. Other beautiful songs by Sissel include, "Shenandoah", "Going Home", "You Raise Me Up" and the list goes on and on. Try some of her duets as well, one being "Bridge Over Troubled Water" with Sissel and Russell Watson. The video is heartwarming.

I heard Sissel for the first time a few days ago and have listened to a number of
her pieces ever since. I can't believe that she has been around so long and I
haven’t heard her/ or of her. There is a purity and haunting magic about her
singing. She is now on my imaginative list of people I would love to have
coffee or lunch with. I sing myself in several choirs in Ireland - we have a
rich tradition of singing here. I was intrigued to come across your reaction
video and I would like to thank you for sharing your raw reaction - it was both
brave and wonderful. You have such a joyous and warm expression. The first song
I heard Sissel sing was "Going Home" and it really moved me. Sissel - Going Home If

If you like you could check out Kari Bremnes. Some foreigner called her Norway's Enya. But Kari has been around longer than Enya and has her own style. I believe she has cooperated with some Irish musicians also so maybe she has used some Irish elements in that context. She produce her own material ... if she also not get some from her brothers who is also well know musicians in Norway.
You could also check out the Norwegian band Vamp(from Haugesund) who has some Irish inspired music. For example you could listen to their "Tir n'a Noir" ....which has something with an Irish saga to do.... You find them on YT....

Now that Christmas is coming up before we know it, you should listen to Sissel Kyrkiebø singing "O'Holy night." It is absolutely stunning and profound.

My recommendation is "Slow Down" with the Morman Tabernacle Choir from 2019. Breathtaking.

Horner stumbled across her voice on disc and went after her. After Titanic she was offered a shed load of money to bring her career to the States. But for Siss, money (and singing) isn't everything. Apparently she values family, friends & country. Tut tut. Thus she's not as famous as lesser talents.

Sissel, the international singing sensation and national treasure of Norway, is established as one of the world’s leading crossover sopranos. Her angelic and powerful voice has made Sissel a national institution and she has sung all over the world, selling over ten million solo albums. She has contributed haunting vocal tracks for the soundtrack to Titanic and The Lord of the Rings, and has been performing duets with singers like Charles Aznavour, Andrea Bocelli, Jose Carreras, Placido Domingo, Mario Frangoulis, Josh Groban, Brian May, Neil Sedaka, Bryn Terfel and Russell Watson. In 2005, she was knighted by the King of Norway, as the youngest ever to receive this honour. And in 2006, her album 'The Spirit of the Season' with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir went to number-one on the Billboard Classical Charts, and received a Grammy nomination. A very remarkable voice that only comes once in our lifetime. (citation)
And I will also say this. We have been waiting for her for a long time and she has been with us for more than 30 years and makes the world a more beautiful place. And yes, new young stars have appeared, which fans raise to the heavens. Maybe let it reach Sissel.

A great reaction to a great cover of a great song by a great singer! I discovered Sissel on UA-cam about 4 or 5 years ago, and she is absolutely amazing in her singing as well as a wonderful human being! She's been singing since the 1980's. I'm an American citizen, but my favorite singers -- by far! -- are from Norway (Sissel, Angelina), England (Lucy Thomas, Jonathan Antoine), Holland (Amira Willighagen), and Khazakstan (Dimash). PLEASE continue reacting to Sissel! Two suggestions: She does a beautiful solo rendition of "Shenandoah", and "You Raise Me Up" (duet with singer Russell Watson) which I believe you would enjoy.

Oh.... you've taken the exstra time/effort to find Norwegian keyboard letters using an ø in Kyrkjebø. English speakers normally don't do that kind of stuff. In Swedish they have the same sound, but they write it with an ö. When it comes to Sissel - the singing bird from Bergen - so is there only one thing to say that she has the most warm and crystal clear voice you ever will hear. She is not only known in Norway and Scandinavia. She has had an internatinal carieer performing on the largest stages. Singing together with the biggest masters of opera, having concerts with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, singing with a lot of international celeb musicians and .....so on..... Hope you will react to more Sissel stuff....

Love your reaction to hearing Sissel for the first time, I remember being introduced to her originally from her 1994 Xmas concert with Placido Domingo & Charles Aznavour, a special concert. A couple of performances I'd recommend which are special are from her Northern Lights concert ua-cam.com/video/6OxoB-zPMu0/v-deo.html
and also her duet from the same concert with Jose Carreras ua-cam.com/video/z1YdDzv5HW8/v-deo.html

Valerie, thank you for your reaction to one of my favorite artists. I hope you would agree with me that her singing is enchanting.
When I listen to this I have two observations: despite that she sings this piece in a high register her tone is still full and rich and looking at her face she has a broad facial structure very much as you said of Angelina Jordan.
Question: Would Angelina have heard the way Sissel forms the words and gives them a distinctive emotion, consciously or unconsciously adopted that into her singing?

There must be something in the water in Norway, or perhaps, the air. I immediately think of three, very different, very talented singers, Sissel, Aurora and Angelina Jordan. The one thing the have in common, the are great story tellers! What do you think?

Hello again Valerie! Enjoyed you picking Sissel to react to. For me, she is a treasure. And really enjoyed you trying to pronounce her last name. You weren't even close but to be honest I was way beyond left field when I tried her last name on, more like in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Sissel was in Utah for their Christmas concert in 2006 and she conducted a few interviews. This is a link to one where she pronounces her last name, not necessarily meant for reaction but one I thought you would get a big kick out of or even a laugh. ua-cam.com/video/0v74MNN5Urg/v-deo.html By the way love your channel.
