It’s always my veg friends who understand and will have productive, intelligent discussions about hunting and livestock. It’s the meat eaters who start crying and screaming that they don’t want to be reminded where meat comes from. The bad press vegetarians and vegans get is solely meat industry propaganda.

agree 100% producing our own meat has been the best thing we could do for our family. All of our rabbits are treated well, and are well cared for. I also forage and cut grass with scissors for them lol! Keep doing what you're doing! I look forward to your videos!

I was raised that "if it doesn't have a job or purpose, the animal doesn't have a place here." But you inspired me with your Netherlands to have some homestead animals literally for the joy it. And the fact that they bring me daily joy is a huge purpose in my opinion. I'm sorry people's unwelcome opinions are getting you down! I hope it doesn't deter you from making more videos!!! Please keep doing what you are doing. I have always wanted a farm but at my age it is a little late to start with anything much now, (I'm in my 60's) so I truly enjoy watching your videos and seeing how much you enjoy your animals. I can relate because I have always been and animal lover but I totally understand raising animals for meat and doing it well like you do is something that you should be very proud of. After watching documentaries like "Food Inc." no one should ever complain, be angry at or put in their lame "2 cents worth" about homesteaders like you who care deeply about their animals whether for meat or as pets. I look everyday to see what you have shared and love seeing all of your animals. We did rescue a little unwanted rabbit and we have an organic vegetable garden and fruit trees. I'm sure that many people have had animals for pets and also are able to raise meat for their family, there is nothing in the world wrong with that! Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing your life and your thoughts with us and for being so real. May God bless you in all that you do!

I found your channel a couple of weeks ago. I have wanted meat rabbits for YEARS and FINALLY just this month (February 2024) was given a New Zealand doe, and bought one of her 6 week old does and a White NZ buck from a farmstead swap meet. I am SOOOO excited and do eventually want to transition to Silver Foxes. For getting started though I’m happy to have my NZ rabbits. I must say that your calm relaxed nature immediately drew me in. I have gone into this with the understanding from the get go that my breeders are ‘pets’ but the offspring are food. Like you we want to eat food that we grow and know that it was given a quality of life BEFORE they are food. I don’t understand the nastiness of people today. I do not EVER want to get to a point where I can’t see the life of ANY animal I eat. Whether I butcher it or someone else does. I don’t know you but I will say that I am ‘proud’ of you for the grace with which you handled the ‘hate’. Bless you and thank you again for teaching me SOOO much.

Tiffany, I'm so glad that you are willing to show what you do and why! I had decided to get rabbits for meat (for the same reasons as you) before finding your channel, but I was honestly worried about the sending to freezer camp part of it. It is literally because of you that helped me mentally figure out how to move forward with rabbits and to have the courage to love them as well as butcher them. So many people act like you need to detach from them if using for meat. I feel like I can give them an even better life when I can love them too. When people ask how I was able to get over the mental hump of the first butcher day, I tell them it's because of you, your mentality and your videos. I'm a year and a half and 10 litters in and loving it so much more than I thought I would! So thank you for being you and sharing!!!!

Having pets and pouring your heart into them is one thing. But being able to understand and make the call when they have to be culled. It takes a special pet owner to take such a blow and still keep your head up.
It takes a special person to love an animal so much that you are willing to cull it with your own hands.
On the other side, having pets and understanding that they can have personalities makes the ones that are meat so much happier.

I love seeing you and your animals have a good time hanging out together. I don't understand why people don't like you. My lionheads are not show worthy. I breed colors that can't be shown. So sorry you have to deal with the haters. My wife and I started our small Silver Fox Rabbitry 1 year ago in the Ozarks of NE Oklahoma. Your videos were the first I looked at for all information from cages to care. We now have two does and two bucks and keep some kits but do raise for meat. I still watch your videos for instructive information. Just a short story for you: When I was a teen living in Ventura, CA, I would take my Rubbermaid bucket to the jetty and catch crabs. I learned that it was important that once you catch one, it was important to catch the other as quickly as possible. The one would throw it’s pincher over the top of the bucket and then flip itself out. But with two in the bucket, the second crab would pull the one trying to climb to the top, back down into the bucket. That’s the way it is in life, isn’t it, there’s always a crab in your life (not talking about a spouse) trying to pull you down. Don’t allow them to do that. Thank you for your comments.

I completely agree that there should be emotion and attachment when raising animals for any reason. Love and care are both a really big part of it. I always feel that our animals are pretty much pets--even the grow-outs!--until it's their time. Up until their last moment, they're still a living, breathing animal that we love and care for, but the moment their life is over, they're just food. It's never really been hard for me, though I definitely don't love the actual culling process. But I find a lot of joy in just having these animals around even outside of what they're providing for my family. It's such a beautiful and fulfilling lifestyle. Sorry that you garner hate, but I think that's par for the course when you put yourself out there in any capacity on the internet.

People who are on your case about having pet rabbits is laughable. Pets have a purpose too and I bet these people own dogs or cats (which might have a job but I bet are still fondly seen as pets). It’s ok to enjoy something for companionship! Thanks for your videos and just so you know I’m sure there’s plenty of people like me who love your stuff but might not necessarily say anything :)

Oh my goodness. You are not a slave to all these crazy people on UA-cam. It always breaks my heart when sweet conscientious UA-camrs are apologizing or explaining themselves or saying they put up with Hate Speech (which is a form of free speech... 🫤 Though not my preferred form).
You are amazing. Produce what you want to produce. Live your life how you choose. You owe no one an explanation. 🫶🏼

I found your videos doing research for potentially raising chickens and rabbits of my own for eggs/meat I think you're spot on. It's definitely sad that the cute bunnies and chickens die; but I think that separating from the cruelty of factory farms will require more people to accept some of the discomfort of knowing where the food comes from instead of just purchasing cuts of meat wrapped in plastic. There definitely needs to be a change to the system we currently have as its not working for many people and certainly is not working for the animals.

I actually think that you need to be very brave to do what you do. And even tho I dont eat meat, I do believe you really love animals. Because there is a huge diference between buying meat from animals that have been tortured all their lifes, and also to pay someone to butcher them for you, from caring for them, give them a good life and then learning how to butcher them yourself with the less suffering posible. Thank you for content, wish you the best :)

It always amazes me (though it shouldn't) that random people on the internet feel they have a right to try to dictate how others live, love, eat, or homestead. What someone does in their own home, how they choose to live or homestead, is absolutely no one else's business. The only folks who might have any right to feel a certain way or say anything are the folks in the household who are somehow contributing. I'll never understand this tendency that people have. Why waste time and energy trying to control something that has nothing to do with you and no effect on your life? Why do people seem determined to waste energy being constantly triggered, offended, and angry about things that literally have nothing to do with them?
I raise & breed SF as well. I love every single rabbit in my program. Even though I breed them for show / breeding stock, meat, fur & manure, and they are essentially partners on my farm, I'm super focused on providing the best quality of life possible. My breeding stock are also very much like pets, because they'll hopefully be here hanging out with me for several years. And even though my breeders will likely become stew meat or dog food at the end of their lives, I still love them, I enjoy their companionship and silly antics, and will continue to do so until that time comes.
I live alone (well I live with lots of farm animals but no other humans). I run my personal homestead by myself. I'm also in the process of developing a commercial farm, and while I do have an investor I'm handling the planning, physical work, web design, marketing etc. by myself. So literally no one else (except my investor) has a right to question or dictate anything about how I structure or run things.
Don't worry about the haters. They clearly don't have enough going on in their own lives if they feel such a need to harass someone they don't even know on the internet about something that, at the end of the day, they'll never have any control over anyway. We know how well-loved and cared for your animals are. That's all that matters. ❤

I love your videos. You are so easy to follow. We could be perfect in the worlds eyes and there would still be haters. Your animals are beautiful. You can see even from watching a video that all your animals are nice and healthy. Their coats, fur or feathers look so nice, clean and shiny. I started raising rabbits a few years ago in hopes to sale and make a little side money but not a good idea for my area. I guess people here in these parts feel they can go rabbit hunt if they want to eat rabbit and then there’s the people who don’t want the responsibility of caring for a rabbit as a pet. Now I have about 20 rabbits. Flemish giants,Holland lops, lion head, lion lops, basic regular bunny rabbits and I just gave away 2 beautiful Red New Zealand’s to the one man I’ve met in these few years who raises meet rabbits. Wish I could think of a new plan so I could keep raising rabbits bc it’s getting crazy to have this many just as pets.

I’m commenting as I watch so I might add more comments after this but -
People are oddly hypocritical when it comes to rabbits. I think we are just too detached from the reality of nature.
People eat meat. And some people don’t! But we all love animals. If somebody has a pet dog or cat then their pet food is also full of animal meat. That’s just how it is.
The questions at the end of the day are -
Do you eat meat? Do you own an animal that eats meat? Where does the meat come from? How did it live and how did it die?
A lot of people just aren’t ready to face the reality of meat, and they find it horrific when someone can handle the truth about it. We’ve gone a bit soft. But I also want to say - now that I raise meat rabbits, I’m even softer than I was before.
Last time I did a major move, I drove past a huge truck transporting meat chickens. I had been living with the family of my boyfriend (at the time) and his family has meat chickens. We always had fresh food despite not always having money, and the chickens were clean, fluffy, and well cared for. So when I passed this truck, I was shocked to see chickens that were bald, any feathers they had were greasy, they had no shade and were being shipped directly under the hot sun, they were all stuffed into small crates and packed so full that chickens had to sit on top of each other, and they were all pooing on each other during this whole process.
It was awful. And later on, months later, I was in a small farmers market. Purchasing chicken. The meat was just left out at room temp, in open air exposed to flies. This is a common setup in the country I live, just how things are.
And it changed my perspective on everything. I eat meat. My animals eat meat. I have disabled rescue dogs and rescue cats. We are a meat eating group.
So why not ensure our meat had a good life first, and an easy death? Why is everyone else considered compassionate for only consuming meat rather than being the one to butcher? My meat rabbits have only ever known clean and open spaces, treats, toys, full bellies, and lots of play time. That’s a lot better than what most meat animals have gone through.
And I also think the idea that “people who raise their own meat = bad” is a culturally insensitive idea. All meat comes from somewhere, and that’s important to note. It’s also important to note that there are many communities who would not be able to access food for them and their families if it weren’t thanks to their gardens and meat animals. We don’t all have a grocery store, nor can we all afford the grocery store.

    • @oreointhesky
      @oreointhesky Рік тому

Also - id love to make my own UA-cam channel later on about my meat rabbits, but I am nervous about it.
I’m certainly expecting backlash from people who don’t understand raising meat animals. But I’m also expecting it from other meat farmers.
My rabbits are raised on fresh produce and pellets, they get toys, I play with them almost daily, and I like to make treats that take hours to produce. Just for them.
I’m soft with my rabbits. I quite love them! I have some that are meat rabbits and also some that are pets. My pet rabbit is the worst of all of them - she free ranges in my house and likes to try to steal my food. And I love her. But not all rabbits are like her.
And what it comes down to is-
If you can eat chicken but not rabbit because rabbit is too cute, then you’re admitting that the only factor to your food is whatever doesn’t rip at your heartstrings.
Cows are cute. Chickens are cute. Even fish can be cute! And all of them have fun personalities. That doesn’t change the fact that they are a food animal. Rabbits should not be placed on a pedestal and given more sentimental value just because they happen to be cute.

Thank you so much! Another wonderful and well said video. I have no issues with the vegan and vegetarian or pet set either. What I can say is giving ANY rabbit as healthy and natural as lifestyle as possible and treating it with care and respect should be the goal of any owner. And yes, if you eat grocery store meat from tidy little styrofoam trays you should feel VERY guilty. Not only for how those animals lived and died but also because of the environmental toll commercial meat does take.

What is it like to cull the first few times? Like I understand a farm comes with life and death I just wonder how to get through that while you’re still learning and getting to that comfortable level. I’ve only experienced death that was natural or euthanasia and they were all pets. I work in vet med and have seen it all. Thank you so much for the hard work with film and editing for us to see. You absolutely have it right on this. Just because something CAN be a pet, does not mean it can't be food. I cannot think of any animals that have never been eaten by a human at one time or another. We are supposed to be good stewards of the world that we have. That means treating animals well whether they are food or pets. Loving your animals and treating them well even if you are going to eat them is the right thing to do. If more people had the same views that you do, and raised their own meat, we could seriously cut down on some of the inhumane and honestly gross commercial farms that now produce our meat. Love them, eat them, breed them; animals are here for us to use as long as we dont abuse them.

Take this opinion or point of view with a grain of salt. For the haters and negative commenters. My advice is to ignore them. There is this level of entitlement with regards to social media that just because you can comment, you should and that there opinion is gospel. More often than not, people with the most aggressive opinions also know the least amount about the subject at hand. There entire solace in life is to build themselves up by tearing others down. UA-cam paints an easy target on your back for people who have no concept of how food ends up on their table. It is easy to sit behind a screen and keyboard and comment on a world that they make no contribution to. The same people who will complain about the price of things while taking no responsibility or understanding the rule of supply and demand. They have no concept of the negative results of there actions. You provide a very good educational layout for people interested in home steading and I applaud you for putting yourself out there. Just live in the frame of mind, that the same people who insult what you are doing and your way of life will be the first people on your door step asking for a handout. At the end of they day, activism and opinions does not equal survival or a better life. Instead it just makes you dependent of the very people you think your better than. Continue to help thus whom help you and ignore those who can't provide constructive criticism. Nobody in this world is perfect and anybody who thinks they are, are lying to themselves as much they are lying to you.

Thank you for talking about raising rabbits for meat. Hardly a day goes by when I don’t agonize about eating animals. I have given up pork all together because they are almost human-they are smart and funny and they each have a unique personality just like people. I practically gave up red meat altogether. For whatever reason chicken remained the single animal I would eat occasionally. About a year ago I started eating red meat again (never pork-I won’t eat pork) but I still have moments of guilt and suffering-although am a tiny bit better than before. It was a relief to hear you talk about your rabbits-thank you so for treating them respectfully and humanely-I so appreciate the conversation. Still, I’m pained about how other meat animals are treated and especially about how they are actually killed. I don’t know and I really don’t want to know. I’ve heard horror stories. Thank you for being who you are. 🙏

I have to say, I’m one of those that has a negative reaction to hearing about someone killing animals. But listening to your arguments for why you do it makes a lot of sense. You have opened my eyes and I understand now. If you are going to choose to eat meat, raising and killing those animals yourself is much more humane than purchasing it from a store. I still think that if you can avoid eating meat in the first place, that is the best option, as we don’t need meat to survive as long as we supplement with b-12. But, if that isn’t doable for you for whatever reason, this too makes sense.
Edited to add: I am glad that you chose to speak up about this. If you could get me to open my eyes to your side of the argument, it may help others as well. You are not combative, you speak from the heart, and what you say makes sense. Thank you 😊
