4:32 heh, I was thinking to myself "I hope he finds that blog post!" Those fans can be quite annoying at default temperature settings.

When using PoE, especially over distance, make sure you are using full copper ethernet cables as copper clad aluminium (cca) cables can become a fire risk when drawing even a small amount of current

I've got a 48 port POE switch in the rack in my garage that a mate gave me for free after an office clearout that is my main switch, so don't need the PoE HATs at all - but POE makes wiring so much neater whichever way you do it.
Are you aware that there are also POE splitters on Amazon where you plug the PoE Ethernet cable from your network into it, and then it splits into a normal Ethernet port and a power plug? There are various types that provide USB3, USB Mini, USB Micro and barrel jack power connectors. The last time I looked they were about £8 each on Amazon.

I've had two of these i used one on a unifi cloud key and the other as a vmware server. handy little things with out needing the clutter of power packs

I am curious about the overall power draw of this kind of set-up.
It would be interesting to log the wattage used by the router, Pi4/Mekotronics products on idle using their normal power supplies and then compare the power draw when connected to the router.

Jeff greeling did that. Its about 3watts is all i remember from the video

My problem is it's 50% of the price of a pi. Just doesn't make sense that it's that expensive when a pie is relatively so cheap considering you get an entire computer.

The fan is a little noisy but these are great!

geat video ,ironically i was in my loft testerday and noticed the fan on my poe hat for my unifi controller was making a grinding noise so i switched it to a Flirc case but then i have to run power to it , annoying as i love POE

The Pi4 should have a reasonable USB C power input with power delivery.
If the PI could switch up to 12V, the problems with 5.1 volts would be forgotten.

I use 8 raspberry pi4s with Poe hats I am trying to pxe boot them from my nas so in effect the pis becomes compute and ram only

@@terrydaktyllus1320 I am trying to use a Synology nas, I can get the pis to boot using tftp (pxe stage1) no problem but running into problems when continuing to boot and mount root from nfs. I am limited into how wild my dhcp tftp and pxe configuration can be as I also use tftp to boot Cisco phones and some other iot devices, so I can’t make my pxe boot too exotic just to accommodate the pis

@@marksterling8286 I get what you're trying to do, I work in converged telecoms myself for "a Cisco competitor" so I know about using tftp to boot phones.
I will try this myself, I've a week off next week with the missus away on business a lot so it will be a good week to do some serious playing with computers and stuff!
