I sincerely want to thank you guys for doing different movies and not the same damn ones every other reactor does.
SCANNERS.
Nuff said.
In a Pathfinder campaign, i play a Psychic Detective Investigator that IS a Scanner!
Long Live The New Flesh.
Not a movie about the future but a movie from the future. Great reaction team. If you watch carefully his 'satellite guy' avoids looking at the monitor when videodrome transmission are playing. He knew how dangerous the feed is.
Perfectly on point reaction, guys. Most of David Cronenberg’s oeuvre is about making the audience feel disturbed and confused.
You may not believe this, but this isn’t even his weirdest film. His adaptation of William S. Burroughs’ “Naked Lunch” is even more confusing. And his adaptation of J. G. Ballard’s “Crash” is even more disturbing.
And no, this wasn’t his first film. He had a few low budget horror films to his credit before this, like “Rabid” and “The Brood”.
Fun fact: the T.V. station Max works at was based on the real life City TV in Toronto, which got it’s start by showcasing late night ‘Blue Movies’ (softcore p*rn essentially) to boost ratings.
If you want to keep Mrs. Movie confused and disgusted, react to more Cronenberg! 👍😝
There was no “stomach slit,” his hand was never attached to his gun. Barry Convex was shot with a regular gun; the tumors were a hallucination. This is one of my favorite movies!
In his reality there is a flesh gun why is it not real in our world? Just because I can not see it does not mean its unreal, I cant see gravity or air.
I think Cronenberg was trying to convince the audience that the television was alive, and was able to interact with the world in both a hallucinatory and physical manner. Thank You, Markus. 🐧🍏💙🍎
“Scanners” is another good one from Cronenburg.
the exploding head shot was epic for its day. Spent many minutes with the pause button watching it..
All his early ones really. Shivers, Rabid, The Brood and yeah Scanners. Naked Lunch is pretty interesting as well.
There was a huge controversy in the Canadian Parliament about this movie , in that it was financed by government grants . The controversy disappeared however , when it became the most financially successful film to come out of Canada to that point .
Cronenberg is one of the three "Demented Davids": Lynch, Cronenberg, and Fincher. Renowned for unhinged maverick films with lots of grotesquerie and twisted humor.
Cronenberg is the King, now you're ready for the Dead's (Zone & Ringers) !...😱
Deborah Ann Harry (born Angela Trimble; July 1, 1945) is an American singer, songwriter and actress, best known as the lead vocalist of the band Blondie. Four of her songs with the band reached No. 1 on the US charts between 1979 and 1981.
Harry released her debut solo studio album, KooKoo, in 1981. During a Blondie hiatus, she embarked on an acting career, appearing in lead roles in the neo-noir Union City (1980) and in David Cronenberg's body horror film Videodrome (1983).
Released during the VHS revolution and most of the themes still apply today.
A lot more relevant, actually, since everyone now has a screen in their pocket or hands almost nonstop.
I absolutely adored this movie when I was in college but hadn’t watched it in years and this jogged my memory.
I think eXistenZ would be a good follow up to this.
But seriously Cronenberg does some weird shit
I highly recommend that you two watch A History of Violence. It is a excellent film that stays with you just like every other David Cronenberg film
(This was kinda like that new Canadian film called The Red Room, about the dark web.) You guys need to see more early Cronenberg! (Marcus has got it right!). And how about: The Brood; The Dead Zone; Lost Highway; Mulholland Drive. :)
The woman with James Woods early on was Debbie Harry from the group Blondie.
"This is a weird movie..!"
David Cronenberg says hello 😂
Another Cronenberg you should watch is “Spider”
It’s often overlooked but if you want a good, grim film it definitely fits the bill.
This is one of my favorite movies! I was so pumped up when I saw the notification pop up on my phone!!
Beta tapes are smaller than VHS.
CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) was the chief display/TV technology in the 1980s. Nowadays most displays are LED (Light Emitting Diode) backlit LCD (Liquid Crystal Display). QLED and OLED are the current top competitors ( Q = Quantum [Dot], O = Organic).
"See you in Pittsburgh." Still gives me a smile. 😁
The way to process the movie is to think that maybe what you’re witnessing is hallucinations from Videodrome (or maybe even the entire movie is a hallucination from James Woods).
Nah y’all still need to do “Possession” from 1981
Videodrome... oh, sweet heavenly mercy. Awesome reaction, guys!
Ah yes, Shortround's father, Tallsquare 😉
You guys are awesome for cranking out the content like you do! Much appreciation for ya both!
Co-star Debbie Harry was recommended by David, and Cronenberg cast her after viewing her two times in Union City (1980) and a Toronto audition. She had never had such a large part before, and said that the more experienced Woods gave her a number of helpful suggestions.
existenz is pretty good too. another cronenberg classic
The expression on her face in the thumbnail is about right for a David Cronenberg movie.😂
Like Blue Velvet you either love it or hate it, you won't forget it. Today we have people walking around saying men can get pregnant because some talking head on a screen said it. The commentary is spot on.
It’s Blondie guys, the trailblazing 70s and early 80s icon herself!
Videodrome was filmed in late 1981; Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (with Ke Huy Quan as Short Round) was filmed in mid-1983. Also. Sonja Smits (born 1954 in Canada) is not related to Jimmy Smits (born 1955 in New York City). Smits is a Dutch name, and they both have Dutch ancestry. One more strange thing: The secretary who calls herself "Your girl Friday" then gives her name, which people then hear as "Friday James." But it's actually Bridey James. She's played by Canadian actress Julie Khaner. You're also forgetting dates/ages regarding the Japanese businessman (Harvey Chao). Sixteen Candles was filmed in mid-1983 when Gette Wantanabe (who played Long Duk Dong) actually was 28 years old at the time. Harvey Chao was a good deal older then (although I can't find a birth date for him).
My favorite from David Cronenberg second to "Scanners". I watch it on Debbie Harry's birthday every year and a few times throughout.
How on earth did I miss you guys posting VIDEODROME holy canoli. Ive watched lots and lots of movies and not many make me feel as uneasy as this one. Poor Mrs Movies! Lets go!
I watched this movie not knowing what was happening, I finished it the same way
Cronenberg masterpiece! Please watch Crash next...🚘
LOL - That Japanese businessman character is neither "Short-round" or "Long Dik Dong", his [real] name is Harvey Chao. He played a very minor part in another classic horror movie starring Martin Sheen called, "The Believers" (1987). Which is worth a watch, btw.
As an Asian dude I can honestly say that Mrs movie asking if that was short round is a conversation I had w a buddy in college when we watched this movie lol too funny!
BTW, that's Debra Harry from the music group Blondie
"You don't really have to kill anybody, you just have to think it."
You guys have to watch "A history of violence" also by Cronenberg!
What I got from it? It's like the electronic waves are effecting the mind.
You could just replace TV with social media and it would still hold up today.
Hardware
1990 R
The head of a cyborg reactivates, rebuilds itself, and goes on a violent rampage in a space marine's girlfriend's apartment.
Other Cronenberg titles worth a watch are: "Scanners" (1981), "Dead Ringers" (1988), "The Brood" (1979), "Rabid" (1977), "A History of Violence" (2005).
"Who signed to participate in this kind of movie?"
You should see the cast of Existenz.
As a side on casting: I was in awe of all the support given by A list actors in Machete for the first starring role of a well liked supporting actor - a bit like Haywire.
@@terrylandess6072 I dunno man, supporting actors or not, those are films by Soderbergh and Rodriguez, everyone wants to work with them. just like with Cronenberg.
My favorite David Cronenberg movie, so “out there” but fun, I love it
Classic film. Even more applicable now with people living their entire lives online. (Internetdrome: long live the new flesh tracking devices.)
Cronenberg delving into the philosophy of media through body horror 🤩
Try Strange Days for another movie about dark media ahead of its time.
70´s and 80´s do have some weird memorable movies....thank god mrs didnt saw Possession.... anyway David Cronenberg have the most weird, crazy but somehow interesting topics in his movies...
Finally somebody reacted to Videodrome!!! This is one of my favorites. I think this quote in the movie predicted online screen names:
"Of course, O'Blivion was not the name I was born with. That's my television name. Soon all of us will have special names, names designed to cause the cathode ray tube to resonate.." - Proffesor Brian O'Blivion (Videodrome)
Jimmy Smits also played Senator Bael Organa in the STAR WARS Prequel Trilogy and had a recurring support/co-star roll in Sons of Anarchy.
It’s been forever since I’ve seen this and totally forgot that Debby Harry was in it. David Croninberg liked making weird movies. Crash and Scanners among them. Even though it’s not one of his films, one of the craziest weird movies of all time is The Human Centepide.
This was a continuation of Cronenberg's body horror films. His previous movies like They Came From Within, Rabid, The Brood, snd Scanners dealt more with medical and scientific programs creating biological & mental threats. In Videodrome he is suggesting that media & technology could be used to alter us.
His early films are interesting and have some gross elements, but are a bit slow.
Rabid was remade not too long ago.
He directed the adaptation of Stephen King's Dead Zone, which is very good.
His son is also a director of bizarre movies, including the recent Infinity Pool. It is a WTF? kind of movie.
I was a teenager in the 80s and basically rented every single weird, twisted horror film I could find. It's nice to revisit them with a newer audience and see how they hold up.
Cronenberg did an excellent King adaptation in The Dead Zone around the same time. Woods was in a King anthology, Cat's Eye, but you need to see Cujo and Christine first. Trust me.
Cronenberg started in the 70s.
I suddenly remembered why I only watched this movie once back in the 80s- I thought it sucked. I much preferred the movie Looker, which was released in '81. "Looker is a 1981 American science fiction thriller film written and directed by Michael Crichton, starring Albert Finney, James Coburn, Susan Dey, and Leigh Taylor-Young. It follows a series of mysterious deaths plaguing female models who have undergone cosmetic surgery from a renowned Los Angeles physician. The film explores media, advertising and television's impact on the public in creating a ridiculous standard of beauty."
This is probably the only movie I've ever seen that's truly been "visionary"...
We need A Day in a life of Mrs Movies directed by David Lynch
Best of luck to you on this one Mrs Movies.
David cronenberg and clive barker should go bowling
You guys made it through 'From Beyond', you got this!
"Long live the new flesh" I think there is a deeper meaning.... But damned if I know it lol!!
Fun fact - Civic TV is based on Canadian network City TV which showed softcore porn, when it started, on a regular basis to draw in an audience. City TV still exists today, but no porn.
Hahaha 15 mins into your review and you're saying 'this is weird'. Ohh you haven't seen weird yet.
I love this film. It's like Brazil in its delivery. A good message using shock imagery to make you remember the story.
It's about stations showing more extreme things to be ahead of the pack and where will it end. The outcome being the viewers getting corrupted and wanting even more extremes. I think live streaming is going through it right now more than TV. Movies and TV have regulatory bodies in place to stop this, but, some still push boundaries. Live streaming has very little regulation and the worst of the worst crimes still occasionally get shown corrupting the viewers in the process.
Love Videodrome. The special effects were amazing for 1983.
This film is fantastic. James Woods is excellent and it’s always great to watch a Cronenberg film. Great reaction guys, take care!
Naked Lunch is another WTF film.
Very similar to this one. Hallucinations take over and reality blurs real bad
My favourite David Cronenberg movies are eXistenZ and Maps To The Stars
Just the kind of laugh a minute movie you watch with your parents.
Absolute classic. Some may disagree, but I think this is Cronenberg's best film.
Cronenberg is my favorite director and Videodrome is one of my favorite films from him. Dead Ringers, Naked Lunch and Crash are my other top picks from him. I don't think you picked up on it, but the lead actress in the movie, Debbie Harry, who played Nikki Brand, is the lead singer of the band Blondie. (Though she wasn't blonde in this movie, obviously.)
29:31 ...Ghostbusters! :)
The timing couldn't be more perfect. A couple of weeks ago the movie I Saw the TV Glow premiered with very good reviews. Some people even referred to it as this century Videodrome.
Cathode Ray Tube - CRT. The technical name for an old-school, non-flat, glass TVs. Or computer display, or radar screens, or anything with a screen before flatscreens. It’s why TV is called “the tube”. It’s why youtube is called youtube. Because it’s a glass “tube” (really more trumpet-shaped than tube-shaped) and you’re watching one end of it, the front. The other end fires off electrons - the cathode ray - and they travels through the tube, hit the front, and makes a tiny points of light when they hit the phosphorous coating. Enough little points of light appearing quickly enough and you have a picture.
Debbie Harry.x
I put this on the same tier as Lost Highway where everybody that watches it has to be told what was going on and still there is room for argument about what was a hallucination or what actually happened. Also what even was the full message. Obviously some parts are easier to understand than others but some of it is just completely lost by people.
I'm going to shoe horn in a reference to Big Trouble in Little China. "Shut up Mr Burton! You were not brought upon this world to get it!"
Which is another way the creative teams for these kinds of movie tend to think. Sometimes your just supposed to let yourself feel what the movie is trying to communicate to you. That dissecting every second is a waste of time and the over arching feel is the only thing your supposed to "get".
Now there are reasons for that. One they don't have a real answer. Two they don't even know how to phrase the question. Three they want other people to think about it as well so they can hear what other people think about the subject and hopefully somebody else will have a really interesting response that they've never heard before which is generally the writer/directors favorite response.
David Lynch lives for people to bring interesting ideas/interpretations of his work back to him. He hates explaining his work because it kills what could be thought up by other people. He wants people to make fan theory's especially wrong ones that are better than whatever his idea was. Now the reason for that might be that he can then use that new idea to make another movie with an interesting idea that you came up with or one that he had because of one you brought to him.
WOW!! This movie had AI way before AI and VR way before VR! Like MRS said, this movie is way before it’s time!!
I've never seen this movie, what I just watched didn't convince me to change that. But I did really enjoy Mrs Movies reaction to it.
The cold open and Mrs Movies having her own Family Guy "Aw did I just do a racism?" moment 😂😂😂
Now you guys got to do Scanners. Watch a unique explosion, ka boom.
Ah, welcome to the world of David Cronenberg. Wait did they do Scanners already:) I guess they did not. That to me is a lot of fun. love the Brood as well:)
This movie does kinda make sense. When he used videodrome they were watching from the start and the older lady said too much on her warning given to him so they killed her and made it look like he did it. They were in control from the start ALSO Poltergeist was BS on static and yes if misused a test pattern can be used as a weapon. It is more dangerous then Static
Cronenberg should make Internetodrome now, that'd be wild. 😁
After Blondie split up in 1982, Harry's solo output slowed down as she cared for ailing partner Chris Stein. She released the single "Rush Rush" in 1983 (produced by Giorgio Moroder and taken from the film Scarface), but it was commercially unsuccessful. The same year, Harry had a leading role in David Cronenberg's body horror film Videodrome (1983), playing the sadomasochistic lover of a television producer who uncovers an underground video output of snuff films. Harry received rave reviews for her performance in the film.[40] Critic Howard Hampton noted in a retrospective that Harry "carries herself with the wry, burned-out, but still titillated instincts of a voyager buying a one-way ticket for the outer limits. A vivid, smallish part can either anchor or undo a risky, conceptually spiky film like David Cronenberg's viscerally deranged phantasia: Harry's presence grounds it in acute, self-aware reality."
In order to get it, being a Croninberg helps. His body horror is out there. I loved this one growing up. So different. Glad ya watched it.
That thing on Harlan'a hand when its eaten by the stomach thing is an old WW1 grenade.
Naked Lunch would be a fun reaction since you liked this so much.
Top 3 favorite movie ever. Way ahead its time and gets truer when time goes on.
Chekov's gun; nice. BTW Rick Baker did the make up/practical f/x.
I didnt realize too many people had heard of this movie before - I got it on VHS (not Beta)
YES!!! You guys are F'N AWESOME 🤩🤩🤩🙏👍👍👍💯!!!!
Long Live The New Flesh
You should do the whole Cronenberg catalog
Scanners is another one by Cronenberg that has a lasting impression.
The brunette in the red dress is Debbie Harry, legendary lead singer of the band Blondie
I tuned in late, were they unaware of that? 😂
@@nickfanzo they never mentioned it
They were confused by Sonja Smits getting second billing.
She was also great, voicing Angel in "Rock & Rule".
She looked so beautiful and hot. :)
