While the Marvel Legends team listened to fan feedback on the failed Engine of Vengence and made some big changes to their next crowdfund. The Haslab Giant didn't light the collecting world on fire and didn't fund until an unreal last day spike that nearly hit every tier. Jay digs into the numbers with the help of Brian Brink's Chart Mastery.

    Hasbro should do a poll and let fans decide between 5-10 items on which one they would want for a Haslab. It would be interesting to see which items they would bring up for a poll.

    Something that John said on a livestream months ago really stood out to me. He was talking about the Dragonfly, and he noted that he wouldn't back it if it went BEYOND a certain number, as this would effectively nerf its resale value due to there simply being too many units floating around on the secondary market. I think that the reasonable price, the fact that it is, after all, a classic Marvel character, and the fact that the overall unit count is low really drove a ton of resellers to jump in at the last minute. EDIT -- YOU SAID IT, LOL

    While I don't think crowdfunding is necessary for 99% of toys, I'm still glad for those who supported giant man. I don't personally see the value but it's nice for those who do. I've never been particularly interested in traditional super-hero figures.

    Excellent deep dive. I think it was a combination of too many crowdfunds and lack of interest in the character. Maybe they should try a different method with ones that don't have enticing tiers like increase the cost but lower the moq and then lower the cost and increase the moq as they hit tiers. Also they could throw in a few normal tiers of add-ons as well. Either way I happy that people who wanted this were able to get it, it looks like an awesome figure.

  • @dbeane43
    @dbeane43 8 місяців тому +1

    I also track the numbers on these Crowdfunds. And my projection wasn't far off from Brian's. Just based on where the backer count was at the beginning of the final week, its average daily backer count, and the ratio of first day/last day backers in previous Haslabs, GM stood a chance of funding. But GM got almost double the amount of first day backers in that last day. That's not something any model could have predicted. ... Or maybe it could...
    I think if it had funded earlier in the campaign you'd have seen that last day spike spread out over several days. There's always that group that want the item but won't back it until it's funded. I don't know why but its a thing. So once the last minute backers brought it over 10k then you had the "wait till it funds" folks all jump in. And of course all the other stuff you mentioned. Just my take on it.

    I think had the backer count hit say 8000 within those first 10 days, we would have seen this huge increase back then. Once it seems like a sure thing, people jump on.
    Base
    Giant Man might be an outlier just because it's Giant Man. The people backing Galactus or Sentinel aren't all the same people who have that much interest in a Giant Man. He may be an OG Avenger but OG is 60 years ago. Younger fans might be more into the New Avengers roster.
    Tiers
    I have never been fond of the Tiers being the incentive to actually fund the base. But attractive tiers do offer an incentive. Especially if they are mysterious. I do think Giant Man should have came with a 6 inch Giant Man with a growing background stand.
    Back Early / Later
    The sooner it funds, the more people are willing to jump on. I think that was one purpose of the Early Bird, but that backfired because it's also a punishment if it fails.
    Going Forward
    Really it depends on what the product is. A highly desirable one can jump over a lot of hurdles. Dipping into "Just do a wide release" territory. Sentinel could probably survive as a mass release.
    Galactus, probably not unless there is an MCU film.
    What the tiers looks like again depends on the figure. But never do something like EOV Haslab again unless it's the Gi Joe route where "yeah we are going to release these in a wide market but with tweaked colors/names"............never do something like EOV Haslab again.
    Price - Depends on what it is. EOV would have probably had a better chance at $200-$230 with no Early bird(but including that head as a base offering).
    Competing crowdfunds - Giant Man did follow up back to backs with a major preordering season. -It might be wise to actually put it on the radar the prices so people really could plan ahead.

    I’m surprised this didn’t fund more quickly, honestly. $200 isn’t chump change, but for a huge classic character, it was less expensive than I expected and I was sure it would at least fund. I’ve never backed any crowdfunded projects at all due to the space they require. @@brettwood1351 $100 or less is reasonable.
      Consider the amount of parts re-use for dozens of other giant sized characters.
      Consider the economies of scale. This HasLab is producing less than 14,000 units. At retail they could produce over 100,000 units. Per unit costs always drop with larger quantities.
      Consider the differences between Transformers and human form figures. Transformers are also over priced, but they are also more complicated with more parts and engineering to stand the stresses of transformation.
      Fans, collectors, and customers should all be very dissatisfied with the pricing and distribution model Hasbro has chosen for this product.

For example, if they cooked the numbers to add an extra 2k backers, all they would need to do is make 2k less giant men to cover the legit backers and that could be the end of it. We wouldn't know they made 2k less. The numbers on the shippers could be inaccurate, how would we find out? People will say it's tin-foil, but 7-9k backers is around 1.5million dollars. Who's going to turn down 1.5mil because they missed out on an extra 400-500k? Is that smart business? If you were them and faced with that scenario, what would you do?

      I'm inclined to agree. You don't turn down 1.5mil because you have to eat 400k. The crazy thing is, if they did cook the books, they don't even eat any costs. They know how many legit backers there were. So, let's say there was 8k legit backers and they cooked the last 3k to get it to fund, and then fomo took over and pushed it from 11k to 13,989. All they have to do is produce the 13,989-2k they cooked. In effect, they don't spend any extra money. They only have to produce the zombie faceplate for an extra 111 people and there's no extra expense for that as they've already admitted from early on, that the cost of the extra tiers are baked into the base price.

  • @Vintage-Bob
    @Vintage-Bob 8 місяців тому

    I'm very, very suspicious about this Haslab result. And yes, I do strongly suspect that Hasbro "cooked" the order numbers to get a "win". They can afford to make a profit off 8,500 or even 7,500 orders. So cooking the numbers in the end isn't past them and would be worth cutting profit a tiny bit to save face. But let's do some comparisons.
    On the Day 1, Sentinel got about 5,000 orders. Galactus got 6,000 orders. Both EoV and Giant Man (GM from here on out) got only about 4,000 each.
    By Day 5, Sentinel was at over 10,000 and Galactus was at over 8,000. EoV and GM were both hovering in the low 4,000 range on Day 5.
    By Day 10, Sentinel was at 11,000 and Galactus was at about 9,000. EoV was at just under 6,000 and was higher than GM (who was still under 5,000) even after EoV LOST orders!
    By Day 20, Sentinel was at 12,000 and Galactus was at almost 11,000. EoV was at 5,000 and GM was STILL TIED with EoV (which was still LOSING orders) at 5,000.
    By Day 30, Sentinel was at 13,000 and Galactus was at 12,000. EoV had DROPPED to just above 5,000 and GM was also just above 5,000 - again, with EoV LOSING ORDERS DAILY! GM stayed in the 5,000 range for THREE FULL WEEKS and essentially tied with the fiasco known as the EoV.
    By Day 40 Sentinel was at just under 15,000 and Galactus was just under 14,000. EoV was hugging 5,000 and GM was STILL just hitting 6,000.
    Sentinel and Galactus both saw major spikes starting on Day 40. Between Day 40 and Day 44, Sentinel spiked from just under 15,000 to just under 20,000. A spike of about 5,000. Galactus spiked about 6,000 from 14,000 to about 20,000. A spike of 6,000 in 3 days. EoV lost just a few hundred in those days, going from about 5,000 to just barely under 5,000. GM gained only about 1,000 in those days.
    On the last day, Sentinel spiked 4,000 - from 18,000 to 22,000. Galactus spiked 7,000, going from about 23,000 to 30,000. EoV sputtered and gained a couple hundred to top out at 5,000. And suddenly GM spikes 6,000 on the last day, more than Sentinel and almost as much as Galactus, even though it took 30 freaking days to go up 1,000 orders from the numbers on Day 1?
    Sentinel funded on Day 5 (10,000 orders), Galactus on Day 12 (10,000 orders). GM funded on Day 45 and 22 hours roughly. Literally the last minute. Really? A 6,000 order spike for an offering that was so lame it stood at 5,000 (half of Sentinel and Galactus's numbers) for weeks on end and only added 2,000 orders to the initial orders (placed on Day 1) after Day 40?
    No, something is not right here.

Also, just an observation, not saying it means anything, but it's curious to notice that the faceplate matches the aesthetic of the marvel zombies from mcu canon and not from marvel comics canon, even though this giant man is a character from marvel comics canon, yet the skrull head matches marvel comics canon skrulls.

As far as resale value, I don't know if it'll be astronomically higher because under 14K will be made. Mainstream fans who don't read comics may not be familiar with this. Can't see it quadrupling in price on the secondary market like Jabba's Sail Barge. Maybe doubling closer to release date then leveling out like most HasLabs.

    I backed it day one, but I think a lot of folks were holding off for a last minute tier announcement of a figure. The Skrull head made sense, but the zombie didn't. There aren't any comic zombies for this to go with.
    Had the tiers been: 1) Skrull head, 2) Wasp or a 6 inch Giant-Man, and 3) mini-figurines of Ant-Man and Wasp then this would have hit goal a lot earlier.

    I “suffered” from the FOMO effect at the last day and ordered one. But did watch the campaign relatively closely during it’s process.
    I’m just so for Hasbro to throw in that Skrull head, only because we were so close. In my opinion, if they don’t throw it in, having it end so close to complete all tiers, I think it will create some more bitterness in the already quite bitter “community”.
    I’m not bitter, I try to be objective. I’m glad it backed for everybody who dreamed of it, but would have also been totally ok with it not funding, as the offering could still be better.
    You have direct contact to the ML team Jay, -please- try persuading them to do their best, so they can throw in the Skrull head. We were -so frigging close-. It would be a real shame not to get that already deigned extra piece… And I’m sure it would be a super solid move for the people who backed. I think people would have their faith in the company a bit restored.

      Hasbro should think about reviewing the tiers when the Haslab gets close to ending. In other words, they could've said that if they get to 13,500, then it would unlock Tier 2, thereby potentially selling more because people may have jumped aboard knowing it reached that 2nd Tier.

    Hasbro bought the numbers. Since the extra number of units won’t be made, it’ll cost nothing to them. What would have been worse is GM not getting funded at $200, which would have probably put the last nail to the coffin for future Haslab projects of that type.
    To say that numbers from 3d party stores and international were added at the last minute is BS: why would Hasbro not do that in real time in order to boost the numbers and unlock tiers much earlier during the campaign? Come on.
    Lastly, this campaign funded at 138% which is the worst score ever apart from the Barge (100%) and Unicron (100%) sold at more than twice the price than GM. There was simply not enough interest from fans to have an another giant fig with zero feature and that won’t shine in any collection, except perhaps if you didn’t buy other giant Marvel Haslab or if you have a giant mega toy mansion.

    The hypocrisy of marvel legends fans is ridiculous. My personal bias of completely wanting the EOV I like many others witnessed a shift in how easily people can become hate baited and turn against the very thing they claim to love. How peer pressure is so powerful even in adults who you might think have a mind of their own. For 350$ you would get 5 figures, a car with 2 molds, 21 led lights, blast and fire effects and interchangeable tires. Five figures is 125$ making the car 250$. Ramen toys car is 200-250$ depending if the promotion is going. You get no figures, no blast effects, no tires, no flame effects, no led lights. In fact to get those add ons you have to pay 16$ for tire parts and 16$ for flame effects. So it was never the price because the price differential is marginal at best. UA-camrs who hate Hasbro launched a campaign targeted at fans race baiting, calling out people’s manhood, name calling and turned the fandom into complete chaos. UA-camrs who buy and review marvel legends were waging complete hate based videos at Hasbro and the so called fandom jumped on the bandwagon and the EOV was DOA. But some how the Eternia play set funded, then the thunder tank 500$, the thunder cats huge play set funded. It was never about the price it was about the company. The most insufferable , petulant so called fandom is marvel legends fans. They don’t deserve a line. It’s interesting none of this gets talked about ever. If every corporation is so bad then cancel prime, Disney, Netflix, UA-cam, espn, Mcfarlane, Mattel, neca, they are not charities. They are capatilist in the pursuit of money. Just like every individual on this earth who has a job or career. None of us work 40-50 hours a week for free.

But I'm still part of the Marvel Fandom, and I would hate to not have Marvel Legends. I do collect other lines, and I would probably have more money and/or space to display things, but I love Marvel. Things are kind of toxic, I think it's a sign of the times, people are like this in general. Hopefully Legends weathers the storm and it's there when people relearn how to be kind.

    • @Synthesyn342
      @Synthesyn342 8 місяців тому

      I’m going to have to disagree. I think that the EOV was a bit overpriced. The extra figures are supposed to be extra (though Hasbro has admitted they add to the price) and a price or $350 was too much. $250 would’ve been a sweet spot. Having it be the same price as the Sentinel (which comes with LEDs, two figures, and several accessories, and, oh yeah, a 2 1/2 foot tall figure) looked kind of bad. A vehicle flat out isn’t as much of a draw as a Sentinel or Galactus is. Yes, some people DID for sure go overboard with the complaints, but some of it was justified. This is coming from someone who is a big ML fan though
