This is the only game KOEI subtly acknowledged the fact that Xiahou Dun didn’t actually participate in Fan Castle whenever he gets this stage unlike the older games before and the newer ones after this.
(Not including DW6, since KOEI intentionally made it so that he doesn’t have any rivalry with Guan Yu at all in that game, which is historically accurate).
This game indicates that Xiahou Dun was only there to give the Wei story a conclusion for Cao Cao specifically, due to the close relationship him and Cao Cao have for the following reasons:
Cao Cao tells Xiahou Dun that “there is no need for you to go” (1:59), but Xiahou Dun goes anyways for a legitimate cause, which is basically him wanting to represent Cao Cao on the battlefield, in order to achieve glory by Cao Cao’s name one last time, before he dies (2:13-2:25). This then establishes why Xiahou Dun is in a rush to eliminate the last obstacle for Cao Cao, Guan Yu, before Wu does (2:07-2:12), while developing the hatred Xiahou Dun has for Guan Yu (7:38, 9:09 and 29:38) in the most justified way, simply due to Guan Yu directly opposing Cao Cao. Unlike most of the other games where Xiahou Dun’s reasoning being there is primarily personal in regards to pure hatred, jealousy, and seemingly wanting to be better than Guan Yu.
Afterwards, Cao Tai and Liao Hua (ally and enemy) put heavy emphasis when asking Xiahou Dun why he’s fighting at Fan Castle.
    - Cao Tai questions Xiahou Dun at 3:38 and Xiahou Dun’s response at 3:44
    - Liao Hua is surprised and asks the same question at 4:38
    - Lu Chang being genuinely happy to see Xiahou Dun at 4:44
Then the whole situation of killing Guan Yu first before Wu does.
    - Xu Huang acknowledging Xiahou Dun’s effort to lighten Cao Cao’s burden, given the central plot of the overall Wei Story and is aware of it by allowing him to pursue Guan Yu, whereas normally it implies that he would’ve been the one to do so, if Xiahou Dun wasn’t there at 13:55.
This is shown in the Shu Story, if the player allows Xu Huang to catch up to Guan Yu (when you’re playing as Guan Suo). They then will exchange the following special dialogue with each other, which relates to what actually happened in reality.
Xu Huang: “I have great respect for you as a warrior, but you are an enemy of Wei.”
Guan Yu: “I do not need your respect or your flattery. Cross blades with me instead!”
Xu Huang: “Very well, Lord Guan Yu!”
    - At 31:00, if you had waited like an extra three to six seconds before killing Guan Yu, Xiahou Dun would’ve had unique dialogue towards Pan Zhang and Ma Zhong from what I recall, telling them to stay back as he says to them that “this battle is to honor Cao Cao” and how he’ll be the one to kill Guan Yu. Even if Xiahou Dun wasn’t there, they still would’ve captured and trapped Guan Yu to be killed.
Xiahou Dun even acknowledges the significance that Guan Yu had as a general, while deciding to put a Shu flag on Guan Yu’s corpse to symbolize respect at 31:17-31:29, to which no other form of Xiahou Dun would do, but only says he hates him with all his being because he stands with Cao Cao (31:33)
Lastly, in both the Shu and Wu version of Fan Castle, Xiahou Dun never shows up, only Xu Huang does, as this battle was indeed mainly about Wu reclaiming Jing Province and being indebted to Wei, not Cao Cao himself. As a result, the scene where Cao Cao dies ends up being canon for all the stories whether or not Xiahou Dun participated because Xiahou Dun would have been at Cao Cao’s side to the end either way, given his character.

@@blessedstellaronhunter Turns out after replaying the Shu Story, Xu Huang has special dialogue if you let him catch up to Guan Yu. You can find what he says after I edited this post a 5th time 😅

Sima Yi had personal Rivalry with Cao Zhen Cao Xiu and Cao Zhen's son Cao Shuang. When Cao Cao ana Cao Pi were alive he would never dare to rebel because so many of their veteran generals were still alive but after several years most of the warriors like Deng Ai Zhong Hui and a few other generics were more loyal to Sima Yi because he commanded the Wei army quite a lot during the period Cao Rui was the Emperor of Wei

Tyler Vielma Xiahou Dun’s last time saying “Your time is up” and how it’s direct to Guan Yu, before killing him a few moments later. Fits the story thematically.
