Wow! Great to see the technique of the Swatch Queen! Took me a few until I got the point of the squiggled pre-wetting, and those random-not-random ‘tick’ marks. Really shows off the variability of each mix, and their special tricks (halos, granulation, etc). It’s the kind of technique you can only develop from doing 800,000 swatches. Great shortcut for the rest of us. Thankyou!
I'm sure you've heard it many times but thank you thank you thank you for the time and effort you have put into the study of different pigments and everything else you do. You have been such a huge help and you are very much appreciated!
🤩💖Love the process of your swatching! Makes so much sense for the mass tone to be at the bottom and to wet the top before laying down a small amount of paint/color. Thanks for sharing ✨💝
Hey Jane just wanted to tell you that I use your blog ALL the time, it's so helpful and informative. Anything I want to learn about color theory is there it feels like. I just found this channel I'm super excited to learn from you in a new way!!
Also, I really like how you painted these swatches out. Where instead of a perfect gradation, you just used brush strokes and fade the color down naturally. I think doing it this way shows the character and behavior/texture of the paints more :) I will try this in future swatches.
Excellent!! I was doing the swatches the other way around for so long....damn now I need to follow up on that method! It has a better end result! Thanks a lot!
Try Chinese painting supplies, Amazon or Dick Blick. I have a set of 6" (16cm) ones for my classes but this is a little guy so it fits into the video screen!
They were designed by one of my fellow Sydney artists and are available here - www.carverstudio.com/online-store/ I use them to store my many extra pigments. I have one for greens (actually 1 1/2), one for yellows, oranges, reds, blues, purples, a couple for earths, yellow earths, greys etc etc. Great for when I want to show the difference between, for example, a cadmium scarlet and a pyrrol scarlet. They were designed with no mixing areas so you have to mix the colours on the paper.
@@janeblundellart Thank you SO much! And thank you for posting on UA-cam! You are the Go To Artist for all of the questions about watercolor paints. Thank you!
I see you still have Sap Green using the discontinued PO49. I still have a few tubes of the original DS Sap Green when it was made with PO49. I also still have a few tubes of PO49 in both Quin Gold & Quin Gold Deep. Thanks for sharing!
I bought it in Singapore I think, but you can find these porcelain water containers on Amazon, Dick Blick and I understand Jackson's ARt in the UK are planning to stock them. If you have a local Chinese brush painting store, that's the perfect place to look.
Love this, so relaxing. Is that little water pot from Tokyo Pigments? I’m dying to get one but living all the way in Dubai the shipping cost is insane,

i love the way you swatch! i need to learn to swatch like you :D thank you for putting up these videos. simple swatches like these are always informative :) QUESTION: do you think the PY129 can substitute lemon yellows (green yellows)? i'm considering using it as my 'cool yellow'. what do you think?
It isn't available on Amazon, but through Blurb.com. Make sure you set up an account if you are buying the PDF or eBook version in case you get a new computer or phone and need to upload it again. There are a number of Blurb addresses - check your country. Blurb.com for the US, Au.Blurb.com for Australia, blurb.co.uk for the UK etc.
I get these from Chinese painting suppliers, I think in Singapore. Some are available online from different suppliers, such as this one www.dickblick.com/products/round-porcelain-palettes/
There is no commentary - if you click on the 'show more' you'll see I've written that. You can just hear the sounds of the water and so on. It allows people to fast forward if they wish. The brush is a Da Vinci sable quill/mop I think. The writing has faded off so I can't check.

I'm so glad!
Where did you get that amazing container that you keep all your greens?
looks like a spiral medicine container
i LOVE THIS...OR MAYBE I JUST LOVE GREEN.
THANK YOU JANE.

Thank you for your great video Jane! I refer to your blog entries and videos before every purchase of watercolor and learn so much!
Thank you so much!

Many a wash of tea, or G&T on my early paintings ...you have a true swatching technique.... thank you .
Thank you. Just what I needed to see.
I rather enjoy greens! I've added an extended version with, commentary, here ua-cam.com/video/SpUmMyc42qQ/v-deo.html
I love the variety of greens you chose. Sara
Yum! Greenliciious!!!!
Beautiful! So sad you have no commentary. I just watched your new video on blues. (2023)You have a beautiful voice.
I may load this again with a commentary if that would be helpful.
I love these videos... They are super relaxing to watch. I enjoy them a lot. Also I'm curious about your water recipient 😍

Ahhh....the Greens😍😍😍
Could I ask for a slow, closeup pan across of the dried swatches at the end next time too? Icing on the cake.
OK I'll keep that in mind :-)
She just wants to drool over these gorgeous colors one more time. LOL! Sara
Do what I did: Slow your playback speed to 0.25x and watch at 0:04.
Would love to know where you found your water cup! Looks perfect for watercolor
It is perfect. I bought them in Singapore, but you may find them at Jacksonsart.com or Dick Blick.
Can you share about your little palette? Where can we get one?
They were designed by one of my fellow Sydney artists and are available here - www.carverstudio.com/online-store/

Wow another awesome video Jane, I just adore your swatches so much. Can you tell me do you tilt your board/paper when doing the swatches?
Yes I work on a drafting table which is set at a a bit of an angle - about 15 degrees - enough to allow gravity to do its thing :-)
I see you still have Sap Green using the discontinued PO49. I still have a few tubes of the original DS Sap Green when it was made with PO49. I also still have a few tubes of PO49 in both Quin Gold & Quin Gold Deep. Thanks for sharing!
Hi , love your videos and really enjoy the silent ones. Where did u get your round palette please?
It was created by a colleague and is available from Carverstudio.com
thanks @@janeblundellart
Love the 3 compartment water container. If you can share, where might I find one for my own studio?

QUESTION: do you think the PY129 can substitute lemon yellows (green yellows)? i'm considering using it as my 'cool yellow'. what do you think?
@Jane Blundell thank you very much! i will certainly take the plunge and get it for my next palette! :D
Where can I buy a copy of your book about color temperature and mixing? Looked on Amazon but they didn't' have it.

Love! Thank you! ❤️👍🏻 Who is your water cup by?

What do you use for your color dots on your paint container? Is it watercolor paper
I used round stickers, painted them and stuck tape over the top to protect them. The paper is Arches 300gsm medium (cold pressed) watercolour paper.
Lovely
Is that a size Zero mop brush?
The name and size have come off with use, but I think it is a Da Vinci sable mop in size 0. Mop sizes are quite different from pointed round sizes.
Is there audio I’m missing? What brand is this sable mop please

Jane Blundell thank you so much for answering! I love your style and the colors you use in your pieces. I appreciate you making videos❤️
Beautiful
Thank you
