Spaghetti used to be a must-have during a children’s birthday party celebration. That is why the Filipino spaghetti is sweet, and Jollibee used to market their spaghetti mostly with kids in their commercials. Nowadays because these kids who grew up with Jollibee spaghetti are all grown up, the taste is now very nostalgic for them.
Hi Emmy! Growing up as a Filipino the sweet-style spaghetti was how I understood spaghetti "should" be, so finally tasting the authentic Italian-style was a shock to me. I now love both styles. Hahahaha. People below have suggested adding cream or condensed milk and other ingredients, but a cousin taught me this trick: if you want the sweet sauce to smell smokier and have more umami, add finely minced bell peppers to the mix. You won't taste the bell peppers per se but they do elevate the taste of the sauce. This smokier sweet spaghetti is best paired with Filipino-style barbecue!
Basically every Filipino kid's birthday party : Spaghetti Those friggin hotdog and marshmallows skewed on a barbeque stick (usually stuck on to a piece of Styrofoam covered in aluminum foil) Fried chicken "Pa-bitin" where the parents swiftly lower the "device" so that the kids can pull out the stuck-on plastic bags (basically candy and toys in a plastic bag taped on to a lattice-laid out bamboo wood tied onto a wire of some sort) Goodie bags they give when the party is over Balloons decorated all over the place (the kids usually take them out after the party to play with them) Sorry if this was long! Hi Emmy, when I use that pre made sauce, i dont add water. Also I add some tomato paste while sauteing the beef (about 1/4c) to counter the sweetness and make it richer like Jollibee's. You dont need to add banana catsup anymore coz it's already included in that mix. Banana ketchup is sweet by itself. It's available at Filipino or asian stores. Some Walmart has it. Check the asian isle.

As a Filipino, who grew up eating and cooking spaghetti, I really find this video so interesting. I also love it when Emmy tasted that raw UFC spaghetti sauce. When she described it as sweet and somewhat smelling roasty, i kinda almost fell off my chair laughing! That was a good one! Being a Filipino, i really appreciate this video. About that banana ketchup. Yeah, it was a signature ingredient in a Filipino spaghetti sauce. However, since you are already using a ready-made UFC spaghetti sauce, it's okay. You can do without a banana ketchup. Well, for me, i will not put any banana ketchup if i already have that ready-made sauce. Tip: Though it may cost more, you can choose to use a pure Del Monte or UFC spaghetti sauce. No need to add any water or any ketchup. Special note: A filipino style spaghetti should always be sweet. We add liver pate to our sauce so its more thicker and it adds another depth of flavour. My auntie’s version has evaporated milk in the sauce so its creamier and she adds meatballs aswell as hotdogs. Yum. I am now CRAVING.
strawberryseason typically filipinos use canola or vegetable oil since they are cheap but we do have an abundance of olive oil as well in grocery stores; it's just a lot more pricey and impractical for us so it's not as widely used and we prefer to spend as less money as we can since people on average don't get paid as much as those abroad 🙂
I'm Filipino and this is how I make that spaghetti ☺️ Step 1: saute chopped 1 whole garlic and 3pcs of violet onions in oil. Step 2: add ground pork or beef Step 3: In the same pot add for 1kg Filipino style spaghetti sauce. Step 4: add beef cubes 2pcs. Add salt (depends on your preference) Add ground pepper Add sugar (depends on your preference) Add these until you get to the point that it tastes like Jollibee Boil until sauce becomes thick.. And sauce is done!. Step 5: Add it to the pasta and sprinkle tons of cheese on it Some also add banana ketchup in it... But I don't add it on mine I just add sugar ☺️ Sometimes I add tomato ketchup not banana ketchup to have some kick of tangy taste to it because the filipino style spaghetti sauce already taste like banana ketchup or kinda sweet so I need the tomato ketchup to have a tangy kick to it. But this is optional ☺️ Taste of our food depends on our mood tho hahhaha.. the best with spaghetti is Fried chicken. In the Philippines fried chicken is always served when there is spaghetti.. they are like husband and wife for us Filipinos.. Also pork shanghai is a bomb. It's always wiped out when there is a party.
If you do make my beloved palabok, PLEASE, PLEASE use RICE FLOUR instead of corn starch and get CHICHARON (crispy pork rinds) and TINAPA (smoked mackerel scad) flakes for the topping! (Also, if you're making it from scratch, the intense shrimp flavor comes from chopping the shrimp heads, minus the shell into a juicy pulp to be mixed with the rice flour roux. That's shrimpy goodness!) Looking forward to seeing it!
So close to 1M subs. Gurl! I remember being one of the first 30k! Not that it is more impressive that I was 'early' but I just say that to be like, wow I'm so happy to see you grow and be part of that growth is a small way. I used to think I was weird watching videos of a stranger eating but now with mukkbang and whatnot, it's so common. Thanks for the entertainment. From one foodie to another sis
I read a little article on her that she was born in California but she and her husband moved to Japan to teach. I'm assuming she or her husband taught English but I don't know. She started her UA-cam channel because she was lonely there not knowing many people. So would review Japanese candy. Now she lives in Rhode Island.
Yey emmy! Loves the filipino spaghetti. That's the beauty of it......it takes out the child in every adult and it gives a memory that is fun for the children of today to reminisce in their future self. Filipino spaghetti doesn't boast or compete. It just exudes fun and comfort. All that a child in all of us needs when we are lonely.....or hungry. Hehehehe
We put mince carrots in our spaghetti sauce and Eden cheese and also tender juicy hotdog (Filipino brand) to taste that authentic Filipino style spaghetti, some even put liver spread for that umami taste...try it next time...still I love you're videos..
Minced carrot sounds like it would add body to the sauce and give it a nicer texture, interesting..I also suppose you mean Edam cheese? Adding a little liverwurst for imami as well..I love different versions of foods I grew up with, My family has italians on my mom's side, they know how to feed families! I was watching and thinking of ground pork instead of beef for the sauce as well.
my tita puts a bunch of vegetables like bell pepper, celery, carrots and one other thing I can’t remember but she minced it up really fine. she told me that she does it so the kids can eat their vegetables without knowing lol
Homemade is always better! I like my Filipino style spaghetti covered in cheese because sometimes it can get too sweet. Also my family adds a bit of evaporated milk to make it creamy~😋😋😋
Emmy....I know u won't see this probably but today was one of the worst days of my life. I'm really sad and don't know what to do. Watching ur video managed to put a smile on my face and I just wanna say thanks. Love u emmy
Love your videos. I have the same garlic press, been using it for over 35 years and still looks almost new.I live in Chiang Mai Thailand. In the last 10 years almost everything has become way too sweet, e en sour stuff, they still add sugar.my wife, who is a Chiang Mai native has started cooking more because of it. food here is quite different than the Bangkok food found in most Thai Restaurants over there.
Emm can you please try to make fried chicken skin! We had this carnival here in Dubai and this one Filipino woman was selling Fried chicken skin at her stall and she gave vinegar with cucumbers and chilli to dip it in! It was so good I really wanna know how it's made.
Thats a famous street food in the country, they are just some chicken skin rolled in batter made with flour, frying mix, pepper, and salt and fried in deep hot oil. For the sauce, cucumber, vinegar, and onions are the best but my personal favorite was the hot banana ketchup lol.
The hot dogs they use in Filipino Spaghetti are those bright pink/red nitrate filled dogs. I’m Filipino and while I love “sweeter” spaghetti, I don’t like hot dogs in mine.
my mom makes her meat sauce for spaghetti like that sweet too! she adds brown sugar, so the sauce was acidic and tangy but sweet. a few of her dishes were something sweet and savory mixed.
Never tried it before, does it taste anything like regular ketchup? I saw both the spaghetti sauce & the banana ketchup on Amazon....not cheap, but I may have to try this recipe!
Jen Baca It doesnt taste like regular ketchup. Idk how to describe it 😂 but yeah, when my family makes sphagetti, they always use banana ketchup. We usually buy it from our local asian store. :P
The UFC brand we have here doesn't even have tomatoes as an ingredient, to give you an idea. It does have chili though so I guess there are tomatoes, but as you can imagine not a strong taste of tomatoes compared to usual ketchup. the other ingredients are water, bananas, sugar, vinegar, garlic, onions, those are the main things.
Emmie, I'm so glad you don't play that music, the whole time, I watch these to relax me when the music starts, my nerves start up, I love watching you! Your much better no music I think, I guess I could just turn it down when the music comes on! Other wise this is like a drug for me,without having to take anything !
other variations adds evaporated milk in the sauce, aside from garlic being sauteed some onions are also being added to it and also some add sugar to have the achievable sweetness filipinos crave for.
Ya did amazing Emmy! In filipino spaghetti there’s no rules in making them but if you are thriving to make a filipino one just red filipino hot dogs. They are red and trust me it may look weird but it tastes good. Also banana ketchup doesn’t taste like bananas it just taste sweeter and like less tangy or acidic and its no biggie.
TrollBuster GossipPunisher you can find it in your local filipino supermaket. if not, you could probably take your chances at your local asian supermarket. i live in a city that has about 2 filipino supermarkets and we always pick a bottle up whenever we run out :^)
This reminds me of the spagetti they used to serve us in elementary school when I lived in Hawaii! Memories!! I've always remembered that spagetti and always wished I could replicate it....thank you because i think i finally found it! :) I have to try this!
In our household, we use Del Monte (brand) Spaghetti Sauce in Sweet style and Italian style to have the right balance of sweetness and slight tanginess. We also add chili flakes or (UFC) hot sauce for some spiciness and lots of Eden (brand) cheese for creaminess! 🤤🤤🤤
I'm a terrible cook but when I add enough garlic and onion to what I'm making, that seems to fool everyone enough to say "Yummm". Thanks for all your cool vids, E. please keep them coming. PS: Great hair cut plus, brilliant Tee Shirt!
when we visit the philippines, the homevountry of my mom i am always amazed how the filipinos love food and eating. Nice cooking video! From Switzerland Jeremy
Hi Emmy! its nice to see you trying this dish. Tip: Use a cheese-dog instead and fry it separately until golden brown, when your sauce is almost cook add the cheesedog that way it’ll enhance the taste. ☺️
I grew up white bread as they come but this reminds me of 2 different dishes my mom made . One was that taste but in a chili( it had no cumin) and a thin sauce .The other was a baked spaghetti that had provolone melted over top. Both of those recipes called for homemade canned chili sauce that had a faint taste of cloves in it . I have been craving it but dont know where to find a homemade style of canned chili.
If you want the hotdog to taste more similar to Jollibee's, try looking for the red hotdogs. I'm not sure if that kind is available where you're at but that"s what we use here ❤️ love your vids!
Sweet style spaghetti and fried lumpia are the stars of every birthday party here in Philippines. In our household, we are using Reno's Liverspread on our spag sauce. We at times, adding condensed milk (especially if there are kids present). Finish this meal off with cold glass of coke! Woah need to do this over the weekend 😍😍
Ah the memories😌☺️💖 Little fun fact, along side the sweet spaghetti, another common Filipino kids’ birthday food is the very odd hotdog on a stick with marshmallows at the end 😅 Nobody knows what the marshmallows are for but both are associated with bday parties 😅
My version is basically the same (without sugar and ketchup); but I add some salt and ground pepper to tast, about half a teaspoon of basil, a whole bay leaf (discarded before serving), a can of sliced button mushrooms (to add body) and a cap of sliced rehydrated shiitake mushroom (for umami) just before adding in the meat.
I like your garlic press.. I'm a fan of garlic.. I also add condensed milk to make it a little bit more sweet and Sliced ham and sliced mushrooms as extenders.. I like ur style!
Yehey! I would really understand if filipino style spag is noy your thing. We like our spag sweet and salty and never sour. It's really interesting every time I make my expat colleagues try that spag. I really appreciate how you feature food from different countries. I also believe that you can learn a lot about a country with the food they eat.
Fun fact: Spaghetti is actually considered as dessert in most Filipino households because of its sweetness and the idea that for most low income households find spaghetti as a food served in special occasions.
Banana ketchup is just used when people want to cheat on the sauce. Done usually in small eateries. Small business like those would sacrifice taste/quality to make their food's price more affordable. In our house, we use those kind of sauce when we cook spaghetti. Red onions are used instead of white, those are more expensive here and harder to find. We also add a kind of pepper, I'm not sure what's it called in English. It's not spicy but has this nice aroma and flavor. Reminds me of pimiento in the pimiento chiz whiz. Canned corned beef is also an alternative to ground meat. We'd usually add a spoon of brown sugar to make it even sweeter or lately, mom and my aunt usually adds condensed milk instead. Adds creaminess and sweetness. Jolly spaghetti I've tried are indeed sweet but it still has that sourness. Our house's version can sometimes be too sweet.
If you can find Banana Ketchup try this recipe out...it’s a favorite and so good in the summertime! FILIPINO CHICKEN BARBEQUE 2 lbs. Chicken 6 cloves garlic, crushed 1 cup soy sauce 1/4 cup brown sugar 1/2 tsp ground pepper juice of 1 lemon 1/2 can 7up 1/2 cup banana ketchup (regular ketchup can be used) barbeque stick Marinate the chicken in the mixture for at least a couple of hours . Soak the barbeque stick in water for 5 minutes, this will prevent it from burning. Drain the chicken and set aside the marinade. Put the meat in the stick, 2-3 strips per stick. Cook it in the grill over medium heat, cook down the marinade and use as a basting sauce. At the last 5 minutes of cooking, do not baste the chicken, just let it finish cooking. Enjoy..
Hi Emmy! You should try making Lumpia! It's a Filipino favorite at parties and I know you would LOVE it. Wouldn't it be great if Emmy made different types of Lumpia? Like Lumpiang Sariwa, Lumpiang Shanghai, Lumpiang Toge etc?

Sometimes I add tomato ketchup not banana ketchup to have some kick of tangy taste to it because the filipino style spaghetti sauce already taste like banana ketchup or kinda sweet so I need the tomato ketchup to have a tangy kick to it. But this is optional ☺️
Taste of our food depends on our mood tho hahhaha.. the best with spaghetti is Fried chicken. In the Philippines fried chicken is always served when there is spaghetti.. they are like husband and wife for us Filipinos..
Also pork shanghai is a bomb. It's always wiped out when there is a party.
This girl speaks beautiful. I could listen to her for 3 hours straight.
That's shrimpy goodness!)
Looking forward to seeing it!
My mom told me not to use cornflour. Because that would make it a "luglug". I use all-purpose flour though.
From one foodie to another sis
emmy yo probably won't see this but if you do would you mind me asking what you majored in college?? you're so eloquent and great at describing things
dAfoodie101 I’m curious too! I hope she replies
8 months later no reply. 😂
I read a little article on her that she was born in California but she and her husband moved to Japan to teach. I'm assuming she or her husband taught English but I don't know. She started her UA-cam channel because she was lonely there not knowing many people. So would review Japanese candy. Now she lives in Rhode Island.
@@hopewins1629 aw that's really sad to her imagine her all lonely
@@hopewins1629 gah, I just moved out of RI, and just found Emmy. Love her!
Oldbmwr100rs eden cheese is a filipino brand cheese! It’s very silky n creamy to taste
Exactly. Also, some do put condensed milk into their spag sauce. (Yes, my family always does this.)
my tita puts a bunch of vegetables like bell pepper, celery, carrots and one other thing I can’t remember but she minced it up really fine. she told me that she does it so the kids can eat their vegetables without knowing lol
@@Oldbmwr100rs we're not too fancy to have Edam!
😂
So we have a dupe for it, Eden!
😂😂😂
Homemade is always better! I like my Filipino style spaghetti covered in cheese because sometimes it can get too sweet. Also my family adds a bit of evaporated milk to make it creamy~😋😋😋
Emmy....I know u won't see this probably but today was one of the worst days of my life. I'm really sad and don't know what to do. Watching ur video managed to put a smile on my face and I just wanna say thanks. Love u emmy
You're welcome and take care.
Dennis Healy you'll be fine 😒 we all have bad days for crying out loud we're human
@@penguinlove9240 could you
not be like that maybe?
Love your videos. I have the same garlic press, been using it for over 35 years and still looks almost new.I live in Chiang Mai Thailand. In the last 10 years almost everything has become way too sweet, e en sour stuff, they still add sugar.my wife, who is a Chiang Mai native has started cooking more because of it. food here is quite different than the Bangkok food found in most Thai Restaurants over there.
Wow I was so fast, the spaghetti is still warm 🔥
🔥🍝🔥
Gihan Biniam that's what she said
Emmy, you made it exactly how my mom used to and her nickname was Emmy. Anyway, I literally tasted every single bite with you!
So close to one million!! Good job Emmy!!!!
Emm can you please try to make fried chicken skin! We had this carnival here in Dubai and this one Filipino woman was selling Fried chicken skin at her stall and she gave vinegar with cucumbers and chilli to dip it in! It was so good I really wanna know how it's made.
That is actually a famous Filipino Streetfood.
Jordan Ciera Williamson me too!! I much prefer the tangy style sauce tho 😋
I just made some of this spaghetti and I found it very yummy some people also used diced ham in addition to ground pork and filipino hot dogs
Ew that is pretty nasty hot dog i always used smoked sausage or bratwurst
Jordan Ciera Williamson ikr I don't like hot dogs too
Sameee
my mom makes her meat sauce for spaghetti like that sweet too! she adds brown sugar, so the sauce was acidic and tangy but sweet. a few of her dishes were something sweet and savory mixed.
Bannana sauce is so good but really hard to find
Never tried it before, does it taste anything like regular ketchup? I saw both the spaghetti sauce & the banana ketchup on Amazon....not cheap, but I may have to try this recipe!
Cowboys Food Stuff. Come Mr. Tally Man, tally me banana.
Jen Baca It doesnt taste like regular ketchup. Idk how to describe it 😂 but yeah, when my family makes sphagetti, they always use banana ketchup. We usually buy it from our local asian store. :P
Jen Baca ahm not the kind of ketchup you grew up with. Its sweet-pepper banana ketchup.
I remembered eating this at a friend's birthday party, and it was great. Yours looks just like Jollibee's but ten times better. Well done Emmy!
I tweeted you about this spaghetti a week ago! I’m glad you made a video! Yay!
YES FOR THE SPAGHETTI AND YES FOR THE SHIRT! Repping that merch wooo!
Thank you!
Oh my god. I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU MADE THIS!!! I LOVE U EMMY!!! Filipino subscriber here and I'm obsessed with your channel.
"Add 1 teaspoon of garlic" adds 5 😂
White Chip thats me when i cook with garlic bruh xD
I always add more garlic than I’m supposed to🙈 garlic is just so good!!
Same. 😂
Never use just one clove of garlic in a recipe, unless the recipe is "how to cook one clove of garlic." And even in this case, use two!
well she mean tablespoonfull lol
Congratulations on the 1M subs! :) Been waiting for that to happen. So long overdue.
other variations adds evaporated milk in the sauce, aside from garlic being sauteed some onions are also being added to it and also some add sugar to have the achievable sweetness filipinos crave for.
Looks delicious!!! 🍴🍝 I've never heard of banana ketchup before.
lifeisablessing actually it's unique in the Philippines. You can only find it there they invented it in the early 20th c. (1900's)
TrollBuster GossipPunisher you can find it in your local filipino supermaket. if not, you could probably take your chances at your local asian supermarket.
i live in a city that has about 2 filipino supermarkets and we always pick a bottle up whenever we run out :^)
TrollBuster GossipPunisher Banana ketchup was invented during war time because there was a scarcity of tomatoes. Banana was plentiful.
yupp banana ketchups origin is pretty interesting. a food chemist invented it during war time!!
the first ketchups were made from fruits and berries. It wasn't until later that they started to use tomatoes.
I love spaghetti, italian, filipino or other versions... over all I LOVE THEM! IM JUST SALIVATING AT THE THOUGHT OF EATING ONE 🤤
I love the manner of your cooking.
You did it the Filipino way! 😀
Hi Emmy! its nice to see you trying this dish.
Tip: Use a cheese-dog instead and fry it separately until golden brown, when your sauce is almost cook add the cheesedog that way it’ll enhance the taste. ☺️
Food from Jollibee tastes better when you get them from the Philippines.
I'm sure they do. 😄
Live in Sac. A ton of Filipino people there. Jollibee is great here!
Yeah im in San Diego and the Jollibee here doesn't taste the same as the one in PI. Especially spaghetti and palabok !
That’s true. Jolliebee in the Philippines is the best.
Nothing can beat home-cooking. The best part is, you know exactly what you put in there.
You are SOO close to 1Million subscribers, I can't wait till you get there!
Yummy pinoy style spaghetti ❤️❤️❤️
Pinoy is a Filipino boy... It is just Filipino style spaghetti
If you want the hotdog to taste more similar to Jollibee's, try looking for the red hotdogs. I'm not sure if that kind is available where you're at but that"s what we use here ❤️ love your vids!
“A teaspoon of fresh garlic.”Proceeds to add 5 whole cloves 😂😂😂 EXACTLY what I would do! Love it
Sweet style spaghetti and fried lumpia are the stars of every birthday party here in Philippines. In our household, we are using Reno's Liverspread on our spag sauce. We at times, adding condensed milk (especially if there are kids present). Finish this meal off with cold glass of coke! Woah need to do this over the weekend 😍😍
Ah the memories😌☺️💖
Little fun fact, along side the sweet spaghetti, another common Filipino kids’ birthday food is the very odd hotdog on a stick with marshmallows at the end 😅 Nobody knows what the marshmallows are for but both are associated with bday parties 😅
We do the same thing is Sri Lanka, but sometimes with marshmallows or cheese with sausage and grapes poking out of a pineapple.
Knock Knock Knock "Emmy"

"OOOOO aren't we in for a treat. Spaghetti with hot dogs"
Herbert He was all I could think about when I saw the hot dogs😂
YAAASS TBBT! 💖
Thanks Emmy !i will, have to try this out ! Like your Shirt too !
I haven’t had Jollibee in years!! 😭
baby mon You should really have some! It's very tasty ^ - ^
Lala Manaka it is! But i just haven’t gotten around to one because the nearest one is half an hour away 😭
Amiel Blue I’m probably the only army who has not played the game yet 😫 have mercy on me
baby mon, I never heard of Jollibee.

That silly play must be Macbeth. 'Double, double toil and trouble, fire burn and cauldron bubble.'
I doubt they had 5th graders doing Macbeth but you never know. 🤔
I love your channel! I’ve been enjoying all your videos.
Fun fact: Spaghetti is actually considered as dessert in most Filipino households because of its sweetness and the idea that for most low income households find spaghetti as a food served in special occasions.
True.
Not
Banana ketchup is just used when people want to cheat on the sauce.
FILIPINO CHICKEN BARBEQUE
2 lbs. Chicken
6 cloves garlic, crushed
1 cup soy sauce
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 tsp ground pepper
juice of 1 lemon
1/2 can 7up
1/2 cup banana ketchup (regular ketchup can be used)
barbeque stick
Marinate the chicken in the mixture for at least a couple of hours .
Enjoy..
I literally checked the recipe list and once I saw 7 Up I went "yep, that's authentic pinoy barbecue!" lol
7 Up or Sprite would work great with this! :)
I love it when Emmy messes around with funny accents... makes the ep :x
Banana sauce =banana ketchup. Available at local Asian stores
Hi Emmy! You should try making Lumpia! It's a Filipino favorite at parties and I know you would LOVE it.
Wouldn't it be great if Emmy made different types of Lumpia? Like Lumpiang Sariwa, Lumpiang Shanghai, Lumpiang Toge etc?
Anyone know where I could get that awesome garlic press?
Check out ebay, it's a vintage Zyliss.
emmymadeinjapan thank you!!!
Erica Purr lol you seem you never were cooking in your life.they sell it in every shop for kitchens even in some supermarkets
John Banoub I’ve owned a garlic press that I bought at a store and it sucked. Didn’t cut my garlic worth crap sadly, which is why I asked Emmy...
Pampered Chef!! I’ve had the crap ones your talking about!! I bought one from Pampered Chef. Very similar to Emmy’s. It comes with an attachment that is awesome for easy clean. Well worth the money! And I’m not really a PC fan simply because things are pricey. But the garlic press is well worth it. Hope this helps!
Love your videos! Such variety! 🍝
Thank you!
Filipino spaghetti is a as sweet as the song Sweet Talking Sugar, a bop.
Palabok fiesta noodles are my favorite! And the authentic not fast food styl (like jollibee's) is way better! Hopefully I can find a recipe in english so I'll send it to you!!! Much love!!!! ❤️
Try using Purefoods Tender Juicy Hotdogs (Filipino Brand) for the hotdogs.
