So good to hear Nils and Carla discuss SGM, and talk about new projects. I was unwittingly clobbered on the head by SGM in 2002, and have never recovered!

I saw Free Salamander Exhibit (essentially a recent iteration of SGM in many ways, missing a few notable members like Carla) live after loving this band for more than a decade , back in 2018, with cheer accident. Feel in love with cheer accident, and i was as impressed as I've ever been with a live sound, they had a really impressive set-up, their stage presence was uncompromising, the music was right in the pocket, start to finish. This is a band that will change how you think of music and performance and will make you feel deeply strange.

Free Salamander Exhibit played here in Minneapolis, that same tour with Cheer-Accident and we also had Faun Fables opening. It was held in an intimate little hole in the wall (7th Street Entry) right there in the same building as the legendary First Ave, and it was one of the greatest live music experiences I've witnessed in my 45+ years of concerts. Meeting Nils was a real hoot!
I was also fortunate to have seen SGM on 3 occasions, one of which found me driving a full 350 miles to the small college town of Grinnell, Iowa with a 101° fever brewing. The thing was, they were playing with the absolutely brilliant Trey Spruance's Secret Chiefs 3, and it would have taken a hell of a lot more than a damn fever to keep me from there. BTW, that night, there was apparently a body found in a swimming pool not far from where the show was happening. I don't remember how I learned of this, but I can assure you I had nothing to do with it!
These are the New Gods of Outside Music. Cheers

I've LOVED Nils and Company since they were Idiot Flesh!
Nothing Show is one of my all time 10 favorite albums, and I've told this to Nils at a show in Eugene, years ago, when I saw STGM.
I recommend them to anyone with an interest in music.
    Cabaret Metal... SO good!
Love the concept stuff, as well, like Black Math and RaR.
    Sunday, Sunday, Sunday!
    Endless fun!
    EDIT: New IF!
Never thought I'd hear the day...
    SQUEE!
    lol.
Not seen the Hymn to the Morning Star footage before. It reminds me of Psychic TV's Unclean video. Good stuff.

I learned of them just in time to see them on their last tour and from the second that the show started you could tell that it was going to be a very special and memorable show. Plus..... Tony Levin said when the Stick Men formed he played Sleepytime for the guys with their music as an example of what he was envisioning for them.

I remember the exact day that I found SGM. April 7th 2011. I discovered them online and spent that entire night digging through everything I could find, bought all the albums, and knew I was obsessed. A few days later I thought to look up if they were on tour to find out that that night... the night I had discovered them... was their last concert ever here in San Diego, and I was literally 2 miles from where they were performing and didn't know. They performed one more time on April 10th 2011 in San Francisco, which I also missed, although I had no money to just fly up to see them anyway.

This band has books written about them, well worth reading! There's no reason we can't have more togetherness happen, to bring some of this out into the open, supporting local, non-corporate, artists. It's not the end -- it has always been, the end.
Also, Howard Zinn, and others, have chapters about the pacific northwest, well worth reading! "A People's History of the United States". Now, that doesn't sound much like the end, does it! 🙂

I used to listen to Of Natural History constantly in my college years and occasionally throughout the last decade. Something about the animalistic, panic-inducing vibe was so deeply chilling and unendingly intriguing. Like they successfully tap into the animal in everyone that most deny exists. Never thought I’d get a chance to hear more from them after that, much less see them perform.
I got actual goosebumps seeing their single drop and the album/show dates announcements.
But you hit the nail on the head. Describing the music is only one component of their overall art and performance, and we’re so lucky to see them come back.

When I interviewed them way back when, Dan would keep to himself only to interject “how we write our songs is..” every few minutes, offering not much else. Carla and Nils were absolute joys, trying to expand and give answers while wrangling the rest of the members. Wonderful group. So happy I’ll be there for their first show in over a decade.

I remember the band having a Currywurst at a small festival somewhere in Frankonia, 130 or less people in the audience, sun shining, beer flowing. Probably Nils and Carla even waited in the currywurst line with everybody else. That was 2007 or 08. Nice folks.

Hearing they are putting the back together AND Idiot Flesh has made my heart do handstands in reverse. I was blessed to have played a shared gig with STGM in Philly, many moons ago The venue had a walk up a million stairs then down a hallway into this bizarre bar with a vaudevillian like stage and blood red walls. SGM whipped the fans into a mosh pit that morphed into massive ballet of twisted limbs and stretched brains. Nils like to blacken his gums for a nice looking lad who just escaped from an institution.Nils Carla, Dan and the other lads played and strained tortured gorgeous music HP Lovecraft's Old ones would love.
Yes yes, kids these lovely folks managed to terrify with their astounding musical prowess and they're lovely stained and ripped frocks In a word they left the patrons "Dumb Struck."
At times it appeared to be a menagerie of standard rock instruments and odd stringed contraptions like Dans LOg a massive wooden instrument fitted with piano strings. The Logs sub harmonics threatened to crumble the support structures. After the performance I spoke with Dan about Harry Partch and we became instant friends.I hung with the Carla Goddess of the 4 string violent-in. Her face in bright white grease paint with a realistic painted crack looking as if her face would break apart. It did not and we had a great time discussing Bartok, and various musical techniques and zanny movies. She was a very charming Hostess.
I had my native american prayer flute with me at the gig, Nils being a flautist as well serenaded the darken deadly stairwell with healing tones.I helped him slog his gear down the steps and was asked to hang out in the bus.Entering they're ancient school bus felt like I had stepped into the lair of a magical Carnival troupe The band feasted on the nuts and raisins. They're physical shapes reflected incredible discipline of trained acrobats.Truly they had all run away from home to join the circus, only it was a Museum of Sleepy Gorillas.
Sharing gigs with Chris Cutler from Henry Cow, Universe Zero, and numerous other RIO artists, SMG was to me a highlight in my musical life. Also I might add they were the most friendly generous fellow artists you could ever meet and hang with. Hopefully they will make an appearance to my neck of the woods I look forward to having my brain stretched.Perhaps I will learn the deep Mystery of why Sleep is Wrong.........
Thanks for reading this far, there will be an invisible test you have to mime the answers.

It's absolutely wonderful that they are going to rise all Phoenix style and get out there once again, taking their sleep deprived primate selves into the masses yet again. I go back to this band being called acid rain and their Rite of Spring cassette demo is still something I have stored away after having transferred it to computer over two decades ago now I guess, as a matter of fact I think either knows or Dave gave it to me personally because they were spending weekends up here in Auburn at the time. One of the band was dating my ex-girlfriend and while she and I were finding it difficult to maintain a friendship after the fact, the guys in the band never seem to hold it against me. We had music in common and plenty to talk about sadly Rebecca passed away in 2006, she would have loved to see the band again and I know she was very familiar with sleepy time because we spoke about it often in our correspondence correspondence. I wish you nothing but the best with this guys I can't wait to maybe get a chance to actually see it in person again safest of travels in the upcoming tour.
