Thanks for uploading this video Paul. It brings back some memories. I used to go fishing on Vernon's lodge in the late 70's, early 80's. Used to go "scrambling" down the old abandoned railway too. And looking for conkers at Cheggie Ollers (sp?). Went on the Manxman only once, probably in '89, and it was badly listing. Don't remember too much of that night. Haven't been back to the UK since '94. I''m sure there's been lots of changes since then. Maybe I should plan a trip... Thanks again.
A couple of things bring back meories here, 1 i went to the childrens christmas party at the power station in 1962, i was six, and i remember the fire at vernon carus, it was arson started by the son of one of its employees, great video cheers.

You calling me liar! It was started with Charles Crabtree in Todmorden who went into.partnership with carus! And moved production to Lancashire I should know I have the family history and most of no dirty all of my grandads brothers and sister worked at the penworthham mill
So all the family history I have on paper written about the Crabtree family is all lies and the fact that Charles Crabtree was one of the founders of the mill okay your right your a uni Graf who knows everything and I'm just related directly to the Crabtree family and know nothing ok thanks I,ll let the last remaining Crabtree know that when I see them cheers !
I'm Eddies Grandson it what I wad told as a youngster ! Can only go by what my grandad and his mum told me ,! I'd have yo get out all the paperwork on the family to be specific though
the name vernon first appeared at the penwortham mill in the latter years of the 19thC when J,W Veron &cowere in occupation. The Crabtree family became involved in 1899 with Sam Crabtree , the company soon wen bust (no fault of sam's) and the new company sprang from that , Vernon&company. this was also losing money so went into liquidation in 1910. another new company started which is more or less the company to date was formed in 1910 with the money from three families the Crabtrees, Dewhursts & Rawstornes. in 1914 new machinery was purchased and in 1917 the buildings were purchased from the DeHoughton family.also the heap mill in bury was bought and run by Charles william Crabtree but closed by 1923 . and everything transfered to penwortham. on the 17th of dec 1970! vernons was merged with the Alexander Carus compny and thus Vernon Carus was born . this is a brief synopsis from the family paperwork i have from my mother compiled by her Uncle Ian Crabtree! i could go n but i dont have time! but you are probably right with the Carus company, but i know nothing of that company only the Crabtree Family history. and as far as i am concerned they started the initial company with two other families.
+Jesus Christ The power station was in-between Penwortham & Lostock Hall. If you went from Tardy Gate towards Penwortham, then when you got to Bee Lane you took a right, and it was down there.
Thank you. Brings back some wonderful memories
Glad you enjoyed it
Ahh love it! Those were the days!
