RV Cooking While Off Grid, Can We Cook In An Electric Oven While Boondocking?

- Can you cook in your RV while unplugged? That is what we are going to find out today. It’s been one year since we installed our Battle Born Battery expansion and what better way to celebrate than with some homemade cookies.
And I am going to make these cookies here in the RV while unplugged.
Our Battle born batteries will power the convention oven, the water pump, the 12 volt circuits of the fridge and lights and I’ll be able to show you the power consumptions while doing so with the Victron App
This will help answer what do our batteries power, but at the same time I will talk about how we have used our batteries in the last year and how they have performed.
Ok, but first cookies Here is the recipe for the cookies, hopefully you have better luck than I did :)
• ½ cup sugar
• ¾ cup dark brown sugar, packed
• 1 teaspoon salt
• ½ cup refined coconut oil, melted
• ¼ cup milk
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
• 1 ½ cups flour
• ½ teaspoon baking soda
• 4 oz dark chocolate, chunks
1. In a large bowl, whisk together the sugar, brown sugar, salt, and coconut oil until combined.
2. Whisk in non-dairy milk and vanilla, until all sugar has dissolved and the batter is smooth.
3. Sift in the flour and baking soda, then fold the mixture with a spatula, being careful not to overmix.
4. Fold in the chocolate chunks evenly.
5. Chill the dough for at least 30 minutes.
6. Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C).
7. Scoop the dough with an ice cream scoop onto a parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Be sure to leave at least 2 inches of space between cookies and the edges of the pan so cookies can spread evenly.
8. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until cookies just begin to brown.
9. Cool completely.
OK, now back to the batteries and cooking off-grid. We were able to use our Battle Born Batteries a lot this year while boondocking. I worked all four of the Overland Expo this year and boondocked at three of them with Belle
Some of these shows got up to about 85 degrees, I would never have been able to work that show and leave Belle in the RV unplugged in those conditions. Of course I was able to go back and check on her throughout the day and we also have a Waggle pet monitor to send me alert if the temps start rising in the RV. I can also control the thermostat in the RV with our MicroAir App.
So, she was well covered.
So other than boondocking the other way we used the batteries is we would turn on our roof top A/C while driving about an two hours before arriving at a campground this way the RV was already cooled down when we set up, now some of you might be thinking don’t we have dash A/C that can do that and the answer is sort of, we do have dash A/C, but it cannot cool our entire RV, in fact on warm days it has trouble keeping the front cab cool.
On days it’s not terribly hot we now run the rooftop A/C instead of the dash A/C just to help out with some miles per gallon, to be honest I am not sure how much this is helping, but it should be getting us at least one more mile per gallon.

All and all the system has been amazing and has added extra flexibility to how we travel and where we can go.

Hello Kenny & Sabrina: my wife and I enjoyed seeing you cooking with battery power. We do the same thing when we are in our RV. When we're at home we will use Duncan Hines Keto Friendly Chocolate Chip Cookie mix. They taste pretty good. We use the Keto types because we have friends that need to watch their carbs. I'm sure there may be a few of your viewers that might be watching their carbs also. I have a question, what did you do the first 2 BB Batteries?
Hey Marc, good to hear from you again. We still have our original two Battle Born Batteries under our steps. They power all of our 12volt systems (no inverter connected to them anymore) like lights, water pump, furnace fan, our three exhaust fans. Then we have the three Game Changers under our bed with 3000 watt inverter working all of our 120 volt items, microwave, tv, A/C and all of our outlets. Honestly I should be eating a low carb cookie myself, really I shouldn't be eating any cookies 🫠
