    It's not like Carnival set the fire. There is no perfect vacation. On one of my cruises, we were caught in the tail end of a hurricane and couldn't go outside but everyone understood. Some things are beyond a cruise line's control but always get insurance. I will continue to cruise with Carnival, they handled our situation great. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the crew member. This is so sad.

    Wow the entitlement is real. There was a fire, be happy it was not worse and everyone is safe. Being inconvenienced for a few hours is not your whole entire vacation 🙄.

    So who's lying? The passengers claim their " entire" cruise was ruined. Yet Carnival said things were closed temporarily. Everything reopened by the evening. If that's the case, the cruisers could've done other things on the ship. Some people want to be compensated for the smallest things. Even if it was from an act of nature that was rectified hours later.

      Sorry carnival should have insurance for any act of nature, so carnival is not going to file a claim to repair damage on the ship

      So one of the exhaust caught fire, and all the sudden they can't use some amenities while they did an extensive cleanup? I can see some compensation happening for things such as when the sewage system breaks (happens rarely, but still happens). But something that affects an amenity that doesn't impact life on board in general, you shouldn't be compensated for. No way you can promise 100% uptime on everything 100% of the time, and it even states it in the contracts.
      Similar to how ISPs have promises, but not legally-binding guarantees around uptime. Shit happens, you aren't getting a discount unless you are paying for an SLA, which 95% cruise companies won't have -- unless you are some multi-millionaire going on some sort of diamond-hand Ritz cruise.

    I’m not going to lie. Some of the workers looked broken and depressed they are away from home. And to my surprise as soon as we disembarked two hours later they were getting ready for the next group for a three day cruise. I know someone who worked for carnival. She said you work 12 hours and is off 12 hours. Working 12 hours dealing with the public can be a lot. I work in customer service and do 16 hours some days. It can be a lot. For every customer that is nice there is always a nasty entitled customer.

      My first job out of college was in customer service for an airline. I was called every kind of foul name and told that I had to get them a flight to counteract actual hurricanes. The experience has made me more chill to service workers in general...which has paid dividends...I've gotten some breaks because I was nice and patient.

      I agree, although many show “ how glamorous “ it is to work for a cruise lines, the travel, the “free room and board” etc.. it’s not without its problems. Everyone deserves a break , a long weekend is nice for mental health and you don’t get that on a cruise line. There is no escape, everywhere you turn there will be somebody. I can see how it can lead to mental health issues.

      That's True nowadays, post-COVID. You need to have Travel Insurance. Because the airlines, the cruise companies and the tour land companies do not stand behind their business. They don't care about customer service. And the first thing out of their mouth when there's a problem is( well contact your Travel Insurance.) And in the meantime, all these companies get to keep your money. I don't think they're ever made to pay it back even though they provided no service. So yes, nowadays. Unfortunately, you must have Travel Insurance. And it's a pain in the neck to fill out all the forms and wait and keep waiting. But eventually hopefully you will get your money back. But if they just would provide the service that you paid for in the first place, you wouldn't need Travel Insurance.

      This is a simple statistics/probability problem. If the cost of the insurance outweighs the expected benefit, then you should not purchase insurance.

    I think the cruisers are being a bit bratty about the fire but Carnival should have offered something. Acts of nature can happen and impact something like the swimming pool but waiting hours to eat is something more impactful.

    Not to be funny but unless 100 or more people feel the way those few passengers feel, Carnival higher ups will not lose sleep over them not booking with them again. Carnival Freedom may need to go to permanent dry dock.

    When you book a cruise you know it's a cruiser that weather can have an effect on your cruise so that is the price you pay for any inconvenience. Your cruise is not 100% when it comes to weather

    Hey Jay. I was on the March 21st sailing with my girlfriend. It was my third time on the freedom in 2024. What people have been saying about zero compensation is correct. We did not receive any on board credit, nor future cruise credit. Happy and willing to answer any other question you or any else may have regarding the situation!

      That's crazy you didn't get anything. I sailed the sunshine out of Charleston March 21st and it rained and thunderstormed so bad we could not get off the ship in HMC. They gave us onboard credit plus port fees and taxes back and 50% credit towards the next booking.

    Yes, I wouldn't be happy if we had to go to the shipyard to get things checked out and be safe, and yes, I do have travel insurance. I wouldn't be mad if some places were closed but wouldn't be happy if there was a bigger line in other places.

    I don’t know how I feel about the whole Carnival debacle. This culture of “any time something bad happens to me someone needs to compensate me” doesn’t sit right with me but I also feel the cruise lines bring this on themselves with constant their nickel and dime strategies. We pay thousands of dollars for a nice vacation but sometimes crap happens that is out of everyone’s control. I once went to the Bahamas for a three day weekend and spent the majority of my time in the lobby of my hotel because a hurricane ravaged the island. It wasn’t anybodies fault except maybe mine for not knowing a hurricane was coming, it was 1988 so in my defense my youthful ignorance was bliss but still I received zero compensation for any expenses incurred during my visit and I blamed myself for my lack of weather awareness. So I don’t know I’m 50/50 on this.

      It’s not the same situation, you are in the hotel you are not confined in your room, you don’t have to line up for anything- this is an incident that happened on a cruise ship if it catches on fire it’s their issue to protect the passengers

    the Carnaval complainers left out the part about all venues that was closed was reopened hours later. They made it seem like it was closed for the remaining of the cruise which it was not

    The person I interviewed, said, the stuff was closed for the rest of the cruise. The statement carnival put said it was fixed and reopened by the end of the same day, telling the truth.?

    Many times a sports deck is closed due to weather. Not sure everyone needs another cruise for that. Sounds no different than in they were stuck in a storm.

    They did something similar when COVID hit the US and didn't inform anyone aboard. Simply canceled ports and modified dining never offered any compensation.

    I’m surprised cruise ships don’t have a boat they can drop in the water for man-overboard situations. It’s a whole lot easier to immediately drop in the water and search than turn the cruise ship around.

    Yes, Carnival is horrible with that. I am a platinum guest and I hate that I have given them so much money. On the Carnival liberty for spring break April 1 through the fifth. There was a smell that was unbearable through the entire ship the whole time. They would never do anything about it and would not give, any accommodations they don’t like to give anything. And their customer service has begin to stink.

    We were on another carnival cruise during the storm that caused the lightening. There was lightening all around us, but luckily we didn’t get hit. We did have to miss Grand Turk to avoid the path of the storm so that we could make it back to new York on time. They closed some of the decks, the sports area, the rope climb because of the high winds. We got $6 back because we couldn’t dock in Grand Turk. One man was very angry and yelling at the customer service desk because they closed the smoking deck. People are crazy. They are doing this for our safety. Yes, it was a shame we couldn’t use some of the areas, but Carnival has no control of the weather.

    I was on the Carnival Ratchetbration last week and my kids at noon walking past Emeril’s saw a young lady walking by whose skirt was extremely short and they saw her “nether region”. It ruined my lunch that day and pisses me off my kids were exposed to that class act. Carnival now owes me money because I couldn’t enjoy my lunch and I kept my kids away from the lido deck and from the sports and water works for the rest of the day so they wouldn’t be exposed to it again.

    I have a phrase for those wanting compensation for an act of nature...(Travel insurance)Trip interruption insurance. If they have this it would pay more than an OBC. Some people feel entitled for compensation for every little thing that goes wrong. I know the fire was a big thing however come on people.

    Our carnival cruise in February had bad weather and it rained for several days and our Bimini port of call was canceled so yes, it definitely sucks but as you said all they did was refund excursions and port fees

    The passengers aren't owed compensation but it's a smart business move for a company to offer future cruise credit. That way you retain your customer and recoup the money when they spend on future cruises; it's nearly free because of that, it's good PR, and it's good customer service.

    I would make a terrible captain. If I know someone jumped, I'm not turning the ship around. I will contact the Coast Guard to search for them, but I feel uncomfortable ruining everyone else cruise because someone didn't consider what jumping off the cruise would do to everyone else.

    A fire on a cruise ship is scary as hell! Think about it? They should be lucky they are all safe and I would be gladly inconvenienced for one evening and thankful no one was injured or killed

    People are always looking for a handout. Yes, it would be really nice if Carnival gave some kind of compensation, but Carnival is not required to do that. Travel insurance is cheap and worth it.

    As far as crew health and safety, the Cruise companies need to include a mental health component. Probably a peer-support system!
    As far as the Carnival issue. The last time a fire happened, they did a nice job the way they handled it. But I agree, there should have been at least a small gesture.

    If I had been traveling with kids and had to have them stand in line for hours to eat, I would be pissed off! The deck and back half of the ship are very popular on sea days, that was out. Carnival should have dished out a little something!! Even if it was only a $100 ship credit per cabin.

    Sounds familiar with Carnival. Took a cruise on original Carnival Celebration. The screw was off and the ship shook terribly and it was a horrible time (over the 4th of July holiday). They offered 10% off a future cruise. Meh.

    I have been on 5 Carnival cruises. During my last cruise in March, we experienced poor quality of food as well as a portion of the deck roped off so the crew could replace the decking. While neither may seem like a big deal, I believe that Carnival's overall quality has gone down since COVID. I canceled a cruise we were supposed to take in June and will most likely switch to a different cruise line in the future.

    I think this was VERY different than missing a port of call... because it was stressful and scary for the passengers. And yes, while travel insurance might (MIGHT) give you some money back, Carnival should give some show of good faith. It's not like a ship catches fire every day and they'd be out millions for being nice to people.

    My condolences to that man’s family and friends, and that lady and others that complained about the fire on the freedom. Get over it you said your vacation was ruined come on accidents happen it’s an accident. We love being on a ship, and we let nothing ruin it, and we missed many ports, and if she goes to 10:13 another whose line I hope it’s not NCL I can’t stand whiny people!

    Hi Justin. QUESTION: Why do you think so many people are jumping ship? I'm wondering if the pandemic has screwed up people's minds or are people just more depressed with world politics. I feel so sad every time I hear about another person going over board. I am a 57 year old disabled RN and did have a suicide attempt when I was 32. Thank God I was treated in hospital and have taken my antidepressants from that day forward. I totally understand feeling empty inside but don't understand why so many people are in this state of mind. I would love to hear your thoughts on this topic. Love from your number 1 fan living in Delray Beach.❤

    ONLY compensation was returned port fee for missing the private island stop. NOTHING else. Except an offer for $200 reimbursement for counseling. 🤔 And if it was lightning (which I SERIOUSLY doubt), show us the video! Captain turned ship and sailed INTO the storm b/c hoses were not reaching fire…35+ cruises under our belts…no more Carnival for us.
