The first time I met Paddy, he arrived to pay respects to my grandfather at his funeral. He and my uncle have played together many times, and has been a living connection back to the island in a way. I played some of Paddy's music during my wedding two years ago; before and after our hand binding ceremony. Absolutely wonderful.
i have watched this video over and over again. my wife is pissed. . time for bed. this will be the second thing i do in the morning, after i pour me a cup of coffee..... there is a special place in Heaven for you, Paddy.
this is so mind blowing and paddy keenan is so awesome. about a year ago i got to meet and play with him it was one of the high points of my irish music career hes really nice too.
Fearghal, I think it isn't that black and white - I think the Irish have kilts too historically, albeit in their own ways - the large "great" kilts that are up over the shoulder and can be used as cloaks are debated as having been used in Ireland, although the lein-croich certainly were, though the small kilts (waist down only version) were certainly an invention of the Scots revival in the 19th century, and these kilts have been adopted to an extent by Irish as well. Kilts in their current form though, absolutely Scottish, though we have happily been allowed to appropriate them :p (I am Irish living in Scotland so I can stir things up and get away with it hahaha)
Damian O'Reilly Yeah I know..But the Irish did abandon the kilt a long time ago whereas the Scottish kept it in vogue..lol..So it's recognised now as a traditional scottish item of clothing..And us Irish are rid of it (thank god)
I was just to the left of Paddy last Saturday Night at the Plough, and it's so Good to have a Ring-Side Seat to see all the Back-Stiching grace notes flow from his Chanter....what a performance !!! Thank You so much for putting this UP !!!
@@inlandonline Thank You Liz !!! You are very kind. Please check out my Face Book page, & my You Tube channel here. My CD "Bagpipes of the World" is here on Y-T as well. All Best Wishes, Sean
Hi I'm sure very proud. I'd not heard of him but then I am English. I've seen and followed the Chieftains over the years and was hit by the premature death of the great Derek Bell who always reminded me of looking more like a Bank Auditor.....
Tight playing from Paddy in harvest home. Lovely playing. Unusual chanter. Sounds great. Fair play, your playing is improving all the time. Love the tone you get. It's unique to your playing. Noone can match that. Those huge reeds.
He came often to Montreal when i was there. At one point we jammed together when we were staying at the same house in Essex NY for a festival. Beides talented and with great sense of flow and rhythm, very kind being!
I can't believe what I just heard. I mean he uses the drones and regulators, his finger work is excellent and he has a good tone and feel for the music. Damn this is good! Kicks it up a notch for me compared to other Uilleann pipers I have heard.
Okay, I'm Scots/Irish and here I have to say, the Irish have it over the Scots in that the Irish don't have to try to blow into a big bag and not pass out! Love pipes...either of em.
The culture of the Scotti derives from Ireland - both nations share a lot. The Irish call the "Bag Pipes" 'Na Píobaí Choghaidh' - 'The War Pipes'. The other pipes - with the bellows- are "Na Píobaí Uileann" "The Elbow Pipes". The "Harvest Home, Boys of Bluehill, etc are most likely from a N E England tradition but very popular in Ireland as are Scottish reels such as "Miss McCleod of Rassay".
The highland bagpipe can make you cry one minute and the next raise the hairs on the back of your neck. The Uileann does the same but in a more subtle way.
I like both, but prefer the Highland. Only 9 notes and a set of complex ornaments. And I prefer Gordon Duncan over Paddy Keenan - both alcoholics, BTW -.
@@ConsairtinFergus The Highland pipes are stuck in the 17th century - Uilleans carried on developing. They are the ultimate pipes and capable of playing just about anything (the only barrier is the player!)
Yes you're right - this is excellent piping. Have a listen to Liam Og O'Flynn with Planxty, play Jennies Wedding, the Virginian and Garreth Barry's .. that is exceptional piping also. Enjoy
Come up Paddy from Landen rd a stone throw from Labre Park we were baptised in the 6th lock and got 🔐 beside the bonfire on flagons happy days brother.
ME TOO! LoL and I really cannot drink anymore, but I did plenty of it in my short time walking across the island Dublin to Doolin in the Fall of 1976. I saw Davey playing with John Keenan's group, The Pavees at Slattery's on Capel Street in a "club" called the Twa Corbies. Davey was so young and so amazing, eyes always on his teacher, John. Thomas and Johnny Keenan were in the group, as was a bodhran player named Finbar(r) Furey, no relation, I was told. John Keenan, Sr. played the mandolin. Extraordinary music.
Cut that tosh out! I picked up the highland pipes at 40 and never regretted it a single day. Here’s hoping you spent the last year working on a practice chanter, and if you didn’t, here’s hoping you start today!

just plain & simple the best piper in the universe! foget the rest when there called the so called best & masters of the instrument when they can't even play the regs!
@@billlyspencer3118 Spillane is too 'crossover' for my liking. Paddy's playing is Irish through and through - none of Spillane's transatlantic stuff. Yes I know Paddy claims to have been influenced by the Blues, but IMO his pipes don't shout it the way Spillane does. I can listen to Paddy for ever, Davy, OTOH, I need to turn off after a couple of tracks. Just my own view.
There are 3 stopped pipes lying across the lap on his right leg with keys on them. He presses them with his wrist while he's fingering the melody pipe. You can play 1, 2 or 3 at once, in addition to the drones which are humming automatically in the background. Around 5:40 you'll see his wrist holding a brief chord on them. The rather odd term for the harmony pipes is "regulators" but they don't control anything.
This performance never fails to give me chills.
makes me smile to listen to this.. my soul dances eveytime

i hated that last hornpipe, until now, holy shit... what a man
Had the pleasure of playing with the maestro on a Western Australia visit. The master

Great version of "Harvest Home"! One of my favourite tunes.
Hated the tune til i heard this variation!

Only one sour note in the whole piece (around 3:51). Awesome for something this complex.
even if the note was "sour" it still sounds amazing
México te saluda. In memorian San Patricio.
God loves the San Patricios, and so do the Irish..
By leaps and bounds the best rendition of Harvest Home I've ever heard. Not that it's usually performed too good, but this is really impressive.

Paganini? perhaps, but I've always thought of Paddy as the Jimi Hendrix of the uilleann pipes
I''ve never an irshman who knows of him who didn't make that analogy.
Vance Godin I'd say jarlath henderson would be the jimi Hendrix
Paddy Keenan is the Paddy Keenan of the Uilleann Pipes :D
Right; comparisons are odious - each man is himself.
I'd say a hare is the rabbit of the fox world, if you's know what I mean .....
The best piper alive with his buddy Pat Broderick as a close second (in my opinion)
thanks he really is x
