As mentioned already, that is a Northern Flying Squirrel. Look them up, very cool, nocturnal and don’t actually fly but glide. Super soft fur, easy to skin and tan, but unfortunately no value. Your marten are very orange. They look super cool, but unfortunately the market pays higher for the darker ones as they all get dyed for the garment industry and uniform color pays more. Either way, you had a successful check!
Yeah, I kept thinking that was a bat, but it’s good to know It’s a flying squirrel never knew we had them in our area. The darker ones are worth more, but I like the light orange phase looks better to me just my opinion
@ I take kids and adults out trapping as part of my job, and every time we catch one and I tell people what it is, they have the same response “I didn’t know we had them in our area”. It’s because they are nocturnal so you never see them. If you watch my last video, we caught a very cool looking marten that was a mix of orange and black. I agree with you, I like the looks of them better, so I often keep those ones to tan. However I’ve never caught one that was solid orange like yours. That one is really cool looking!
We used to use poles with foot trap sets but you sometimes loose marten like that so we switched to box 120 sets and just never took of the foot traps off of the poles
Always a pleasure running the trap line with you!! Be safe. Take cate
Thanks! You too!
Bat??
That young man is a flying squirrel. I have trapped to many to count. They get in my marten traps all the time.
Thats good to know i kept thinking it was a bat

@deadpinecollective thank you
Would you have less fur damage on the back if you put the trigger side down when you put it in the box? Anybody do that?
@@chrisholmes6029 i dont know never tried that
why this there multiple traps on your marten poles?
