- Mechanics eye view as I remove the transmission, replace clutch and rear main seal. Same procedure for any 2002-2006 Cooper S or 2005-2008 Cooper S convertible.
Post any questions in the comments section below!
6 speed Getrag transmission. We are installing a competition clutch kit with solid flywheel.
See my other video for Cooper (non-S) procedure:
• 2002-06 MINI Cooper No...
Part 1: Remove transmission
• 2002-06 MINI Cooper S ...
Part 2: Install new clutch and reassemble
• 2002-06 MINI Cooper S ...
Total job time around 9 hours.
We're installing a competition clutch, but my recommendation is the Valeo conversion clutch kit (buy here):

By a new rear main seal here:
amzn.to/1oJI0V9
Redline MTL transmission oil: amzn.to/1rdl7Mg
Engine support bar:
amzn.to/1ndKyrX
Ball joint separator:
amzn.to/1x2cKHr
Transmission jack:
www.harborfreight.com/automoti...
or
amzn.to/116PWdb
Procedure is the same for any R53 or R53 supercharged MINI Cooper, year 2003 - 2006. For non-supercharged MINIs 2002-2006, you don't need to remove the bumper or most of the air intake path.
Job includes removal of front bumper, crash bumper, front end service, removing halfshafts, subframe, starter motor, power steering reservoir, wheel liners, air intake, throttle body, intercooler.
Other stuff to replace while you you have the subframe and front of the car out:
Crankshaft position sensor o-ring
Rear main seal
Inner and outer ball joints
Control arm bushings
Front sway bar bushings
Any leaking power steering hoses
Loose tie rod ends
If you still have energy, supercharger oil service?

Well, thanks to you I fitted my clutch!! I am not a mechanic, 5.5 hours having never done a front wheel drive clutch before. Mine is right hand drive, I opted to leave the steering rack connected to the vehicle & drop the sub frame only but I could not have done it without this amazing piece of video. Many thanks. I would advise anyone not to be scared of this job :-)
👏👏👏
just wanted to chime in to thank you for doing this.......Im in the middle of it and awaiting parts, your guidance has helped me tremendously...........you'll never know how much I appreciate this!
Thanks bro.......
Great stuff, man. These videos were an absolute necessity for me in my recent clutch replacement on my '04 R53. Don't know what I would have done without them!
Just did my 2004 R53’s clutch this weekend and definitely wouldn’t have survived without this great video. Thanks so much, Kurt! You’re the mini Guru
Very well done video. I appreciate the step by step process along with naming all the nuts, bolts and wrench/ socket sizes! I would not have been successful to try & figure this out on my own. Keep up the excellent work - you have set a new standard for car repair videos. God bless you.
You make some seriously good videos. Very clear, quick, informative and detailed with great tips. Your videos are saving a couple R53s from joining the scrap yard.
your doing the lords work by making these videos!!! Great job and very helpful.
This video and a few tools is all you need to accomplish this repair! Awesome attention to detail - I pulled it off without a hitch and give all the credit to this guy! Thanx soooo much!
I really appreciate how detailed you are!!! The fact that you let us know which bolts and what sizes. I really enjoy your videos!
I want to thank you again so much for making these videos! I would not have been able to do this repair on a friend's mini without your help. You did a fantastic job. From one UA-cam how-to guy to another, we understand the time it takes to edit and post videos like this. I get comments on my channel for my mustang transmission videos, and now I know how their gratitude really feels. Thanks again! Keep up the good work !!
After watching part 1 and 2 of this clutch change I will make an attempt to complete the job myself luckily I have a Classic mini mad friend who's good at mechanics and has nearly every tool to change a clutch or 90% of parts on cars. Your videos are highly detailed and valued by professionals and amateurs alike. Thank you Kurt.
I cannot thank you enough! I've just finished replacing the clutch on my MINI, and it's all because of your excellent video. Not sure I'd want to do it again, but I learned a lot from the experience 🙂
I want to personally say THANK YOU for all of your Videos -- YOU ARE THE SAVIOR OF MINI DIY OWNERS! I have loved working on jeeps, mustangs, woodworking, etc thru years -- but had never done anything on Mini before -- and now I've deep into restoration of 2007 Mini Cooper JCW Sidewalk edition as gift for my wife --- I've used multiple of your videos! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR TAKING THE TIME TO MAKE ALL THESE VIDEOS!
Thanks for all the great info. I'm tackling the clutch job on my 1st gen 06 cooper S. All your videos have helped me alot. Thx again
Thank you so much for your teardown video as well as this one.
Man BMW made this little car such a pain to work on. And I thought getting the trans out of my Jetta was a project. This is a whole nother level.
Amazing video, it will be my next project, you couldn't be more detailed and oriented to make job easier for us amateurs., a million thanks.
Not only with your work on the Mini Coopers because you are so methotical in your work you would be a great machinist / tool maker. An eye for detail and never leaving anything to chance, Hats off ! These videos are keepers and I will put them on CD for my personel use on my Mini.
You are absolutely right, that's exactly what it was. I replace it for a new one and it slid right in, thanks again your the man !
Thanks for the great video. I am probably repeating what others have said, but I wouldn't have attempted this job without your help. Especially when I found out about removing the subframe.I live in Australia and have spoken to a few people here that use your videos. My problem ended up being a shattered thrust bearing.Keep up the good work.2006 MINI Cooper S Park Lane
Thanks a lot for your video . I changed my clutch by a Valeo and the feeling difference is really nice .
Never did a clutch on my own till now. Thank you very much.
Deep into my daughter's R53 ----------------- VERY VERY MUCH APPRECIATED VIDEO - old git, UK
If I ever met you good sir, I’d owe you many a beer (or coffee). 2 years back, I used your videos to do my very first ever clutch job on my beloved r53. If I couldn’t do it myself, I’d have to get rid of the car as I had no money to pay someone. I followed your videos to the T and successfully installed and used that clutch for a long time! Today, I’ve come back to this video, as I need to fill my mk1 Audi TT with trans fluid, and I forgot the trick with the air, but remembered who had it! Thanks so much man!
Great video...in fact all your videos are superb. You've provided a truly invaluable reference library on these cars. Thanks for all the effort you've put into your channel!
Also just for future reference, to get the bolt off/on the steering rack to attach the steering wheel go through the drivers side wheel well. Much easier access for me. Great vids. Did my whole clutch job through your guidance!
That's the type of video's that are super valuable! For the techs they are a great reference... but also for the techs without a garage, so they understand the work the garage had to do and what you pay for. An immediate like and subscribe!
Very true!
Excellent job sir, I wish you had worked with me when I was a service advisor at a European dealership. It's so hard to find great mechanics these days.
Mod MINI- I bought a 2005 Mini Cooper S Convertible (R52) for my son for his first car. After we bought it we figured out it needed a new clutch. To be honest I was distraught about this. I am not a mechanic but am somewhat mechanical. After watching your 2 part video I felt completely confident that I could do it. And just so you know, I did it and now feel that I understand this little beauty a whole lot better. I would not have been able to do it without your video(s) and wanted to say thank you for taking the time to help out "shade tree" mechanics like myself! God Bless!
thats a lot of work, god bless people like you that help people like me to do this type of jobs!
Awesome video! Not sure I would attempt this but it's great to know what's required, thank you for taking the time to provide these videos!!
Brother love your video, I have actual been very hesitant in purchasing a mini because i know it was a very involved process, think I’ll go pick one up this week. Thanks again!!
Excellent. The play by play was articulate, clearly understood and described very well. Of all the R and R videos I’ve watched for my vehicles ( not a Mini) this was the best I have seen. Well done young man! I would have you work on my trucks and cars any day.
Young man? Haha.
Great and informative. Tackling mine this week. Although I went with a single Mass flywheel conversion. Love your videos!
I don't own a Mini, but watched both parts of this video and subscribed. This is the best clutch change video I've watched (about 10 so far) with different makes/models.
You have interesting entertainment preferences.
My respect for this Gentleman. Great Job and great video with excellent level of explanations.
I followed your guide to replace my clutch in my 2006 r53 and it was great, the step by step nature of this video really helped me get through it without making any major mistakes. The car drives like a totally different car now because of the new clutch and other mods/maintenance I did while I had it apart (poly control arm bushings, supercharger oil, ball joints, hubs, strut top hats, short shifter, rear sway bar, a few other that I'm sure I'm forgetting). The best part is how light the clutch pedal is, I never knew it could be this light! it probably takes less than half the force to push down (probably caused by the throwout bearing that was in like 15 pieces but still functioning somehow). The car started and drove with zero issues first try! I can see why many shops said they didn't want to even attempt the clutch, but your job made it possible with ease! Thanks Mod MINI!
Good job!
I love watching you work. You're a great technician.
Thank you very much!
Just want to say great video. You did an awesome job explaining even the small things. But kept out nonsense info. Awesome vid again take care
Job well done.
Have one to do in my shop right now as well as a supercharger...
Great reference video for those not experienced with the mini.....
Second time I’ve used ur videos to do the clutch on my cooper. Im currently doing a 6 speed swap so I had to swap from ur cooper video to ur cooper s video half way thru😂
I’ve watched these two videos so so many times over the last year. And I’m finally going to attempt this! 🙈
I suggest you watch some others of the same car as well
@@tomcass2.030 it took me a few days tbh. But I wrote down every step from these videos. And kabelnd every bolt and part and took photos. And -- I did it!!!
@@MePeterNicholls right on man! I just finally finished part 1 after a few weeks 😂
I love your videos, I watched it over and over ... step by step and my mini is running great I so thank you. keep it up :)
Amazing videos just finished my clutch job due to this!
Thank you for your in depth videos! I just 2 hours ago got done doing my clutch (valeo kit), oil pan gasket, oil filter housing gaskets, crank sensor seal and heater core. I had a four day weekend so i went nuts. I have an 02 R53 and would not have attempted this without watching your videos dozens of times! Had a couple of small mishaps (broke the top off my coolant temp sensor and broke the end off of the plastic tube leading to the IAT sensor) but all in all came out great! Thanks again for your great videos!!!!!
Also did the rear main seal too!
Good on you - it's a time consuming job but not terribly hard if you take your time and think about what you are doing. Glad the videos were helpful.
Your videos have saved me countless hours and dollars working on my '06 R53. I'm in the middle of a clutch job right now and have been playing your videos in my garage as a guide. I've done several RWD clutches but this is my first FWD. I don't know that I would have tackled the job without your videos as support. THANK YOU!!!!
Rich Johnstun Glad to hear and thank you for your support!
+Mod MINI Absolutly, I know how much work goes into making these videos. I don't have the trans back in the car yet as it fell off the jack this morning and broke the bracket that holds the shift cables (dumb mistake on my part) but I hope to have it back on the road in the next couple of days. THANKS AGAIN!
Thank you for an awesome video on the S clutch replacement and also, for the one on the supercharger maintenance. We have an 05 S convertible. My wife bought it used and the clutch was not good from the beginning (but we did not know how it was supposed to be), then it started slipping just as you described. I went with the Valeo conversion, did the rear main seal, the crank position sensor, as well as the supercharger maintenance. I chose to pull the supercharger off before pulling the transmission and did not reinstall it until the transmission was back in. This seemed to give fairly good access to the bell housing bolts. I kept my iPad in the garage with me and kept referring to the video as I progressed. The job, though time consuming, went very smoothly thanks to you. I did find quite a few loose fasteners along the way, tightening them seems to have helped with the many rattles. My wife’s only complaint now is that the clutch peddle feels too light!!! I think that it is
great. Thanks again... Oh ya. The flywheel was toast and the release bearing looked like it was ready to explode.
Good to hear. Clutch pedal will get a little stiffer after a couple weeks.
Thanks for your great videos, I've been watching for years... I'm on my 5th R53 JCW in the last 2 years, but the first four weren't around long enough to wrench on, due to bad timing. Finally got what I hope is a long termer (1 of 301 JCW Checkmates with Aero). I also put a deposit on another JCW last week from a dealer in Portland near you, but they were terrible to work with and I've asked for my deposit back... I'm still bummed on that one, perfect spec BRG. I agree with you on the current GP BaT auction! Gotta put those stock wheels on the collector grade cars! Again, really appreciate your R53 content here on UA-cam!
Amazing video, very well explained and to the point. You earned yourself a new subscriber 🤙🏼
Thanks to your video instructions I've been driving reliably with the Valeo clutch for the past month. And, as you suggested, I changed the front suspension ball joints and bushings too, and the serpentine belt, and the belt tensioner, and the crank position sensor o-ring. The most difficult part was getting the rusted fasteners out of the bumper cover, and repairing the consequential damage to the plastic bits.
I finally selected RockAuto.com as a source for delivering the parts to my door in Montreal at a reasonable price. Local sources were quoting over $900 for the Valeo clutch kit!!
I'm jealous of how clean your garage remains during the repairs. I had to wash my floors twice, and go through 4 changes of work clothes during the repairs. Must be due to the Quebec winters.
Thanks for these most excellent video instructions.
Vel Oce I think the camera fails to caputure how messy the garage gets during repairs. But I probably spill less than most people; with experience I know where the fluids are going to go. I'm also tripping over tools and parts all the time.
I don't have a mini cooper and no plans to get one, but your videos are great. It's almost like you planned the video ahead of time.
I've done this job dozens of times.
Amazing work dude! I have to replace my clutch w/ flywheel too. This is really helping me out. Greets from Germany! :D
Excellent. Thanks for the how-to instructional video.
My MINI having 150K miles I think I'll be replacing other components as I go that are a pain to get to.
Incredibly detailed and calm video on this bloody awful job. Working on the Grand Cherokee V6 Diesel is a piece of piss compared to this nightmare. Well done!
Many thanks for your excellent clutch/fly wheel replacement, drive shaft removal, supercharger service and power steering explanations. As I first-timer, I did the lot in one go. Your videos made the daunting tasks approachable; almost easy, as I knew what to expect when I saw it. My transmission, with a new Valeo single mass FW kit, went straight back in first time and is much better than the original.
However, it was the hoses and pipe clamps and the electrical connections and clips (especially the "octopus" on top of the transmission, which I eventually managed to loosen for better access) that took ages to take apart without breaking them and to put back together in the right order. I took a days longer than 9 hours.
More of your cut-away images or better lighting and a few directions on how to get these bits free would help going forwards.
I am immensely grateful for your guidance and now know my car a lot better.
Many thanks again.
PS. For UK (right-hand drive cars/drivers), Haynes (my standard reference) does not appear to mention removing the sub-frame but doing so, makes the whole process a lot easier.
The only way to remove clutch without removing subframe is to take entire powertrain out together and then separate transmission from engine on the bench.
Thanks for the video, swapping in a 6 speed and could tell the orientation of the clutch disk. This video showed on the removal. Thanks again
Great video! Thanks for taking the time to document the work.
I am subscribing. Tip: hang onto the old pressure plate and clutch alignment tool. You can use the plate to create a coupler for an electric motor in case your ICE engine fails and you want to spend the next 3 years converting. (Ha ha - but really, I am in the 3rd year of converting my Sunbeam Alpine to electric at the moment. So much to learn.)
These videos are amazing! i am currently looking to buy a 2004 mini cooper s and if i need to do anything i know im coming to this channel. Thank you!
Brilliant video, excellently explained and very detailed easy to understand tutorial, thank you.
A new great job!!! Thanks a lot for sharing.
I like your method to fill the gear oil into the gerabox. Congratulations...
Andoni Cadenato Velasco Glad it was helpful. Thanks for watching.
Very informative, very well narrated and very good video, thank you.
I found on tip if you have a helper turn the harmonic dampener a little bit when remating the trans to the flywheel it went right up into place. Just need the spline to engage properly and it was nice and easy to reinstall. Thanks for the video!!
Or rotate the transmission as you push it on.
I know this video is old but I just replaced my clutch and front crankshaft pulley in my daughter's 2005 Mini Cooper s.
A couple of things I want to let others know is in higher mileage car I replaced the thermostat since I was right there with the air box removed. I also bought a bunch of panel fasteners for cheap and that is a labor and time saver. By this time those things are getting pretty old and more than half snap or spin. Just drill them out and replace. I removed the hood since I have a cherry picker and not the brace shown. Still used a strap on the transmission to position it. That is a great tip. Finally my intercooler horn rubber was old and when I started up the engine it whined like crazy and ran rough. Changed out to new boots and all was well. All in all I'm in it for about 500 dollars and the shops want north of 4k.
Such a good tip with the transmission oil fill method!
wow, nice video dude! thanks for taking the time to make and post this. ps - i am no longer looking at buying a mini cooper in need of a clutch, holy Hannah that was a lot of work! :)
Hey it's not that bad really, if you have time on your hands it might be a way to make or save some money.
Wow. Amazing talent to do this and a great video. Thanks so much for doing this. Just subscribed.
I found these 2 videos very helpful and I also chose the valeo solid flywheel kit. Just took it for it's first test drive and I have a couple lights on in the dash; abs, traction control and the hood/trunk warning light is always on
Maybe you forgot a ground wire.
Mod MINI hood light went away after I unplugged the sensor and plugged it back in but the abs light is still on and it won't clear. code is 5d90 front left wheel speed sensor no connection. is there another plugin for that under the airbox?
The only plug is the blue cylinder shaped connector on back side of modular front end, next to the foglight. There could be wire damage or sometimes those things just fail. Get a new one here. amzn.to/2sYePK9
wowww.....soo many bolts.......great work!great video!
First of all, great videos. You are a great help to many amateur mechanics out there. I did this job on my '04 S a while back and had no luck lining up the transmission with the engine when it went back in. I didn't have a trans jack and it would not sit right on my floor jack. There is not a flat spot on that thing!
My son noticed that loop cast into the top of the transmission. if you lift it from there the transmission hangs at a perfect angle to align. We got it close from below and then used a cherry picker and grabbed that loop from above and mating the two was a breeze.
That is obviously what the loop is for but nobody tells you that.
jethro sabath Yes, I do that now. Sometimes it helps, sometimes it doesn't. I put a ratcheting strap over the top of the strut tower bar. A few weeks ago I did one and it still took a half hour, last weekend I did another one and it went on in under a minute!
*****
Awesome videos. I do not need it yet but am buying the parts so I have them ready. I looked at Valeo and there is one that say 2002, 2003, 2004 (from 7/04), 2005- 2008. I have a 2004 Mini Cooper S from Oct. 2003. Do you know the Valeo part number? Thanks!! Again, the video was awesome. I had no idea you had to pretty much take the whole front end off. LOL!! But better that I know now than wait until something bad happened. LOL!!
customcruiserroy All 2002-2006 Cooper S use the same Valeo part - I think the part number is at the Amazon link.
amzn.to/1zthwOL
I must say nothing beats experience, I'm about to do this job for the 3rd time on my mini. I wish i had followed this guide from the start. one thing i will add though, is there's no need to drain your coolant ! the radiator will come away plenty enough without disconnecting it.
Removing radiator is better for visibility and accessibility, and makes job less frustrating but you are correct, it does not need to be removed, especially if you can put the car on a lift.
Awesome, just did my girlfriends clutch and this helped so much! Thank you.
this is really detailed. nice job!
i think i blew my clutch because i almost money shifted it, sitting at 335k strong, hopefully this video series will help me out.👍🏻 thanks from norcal
Great video. Wish you were my next door neighbour and could do this on my little mini!
Thanks for your tutorials mate, legend!!
awesome work man, enjoyed watching
Fist time viewing your videos, Now a Subscriber :)
Man what a job! and not to mention one a heck of a mechanic! . Great and most ever so so helpful, very nice neat clean shop ,Thanks again!!!
very nice work, and you so much batter then a real mechanic, you know 9 out 10 they leave out one blot, and they call them self esc certified, what a joke.
Well I only have to remember one car so that helps with quality.
Great information with your videos !! I have done so much work on my daughters R50 non S with the help of your videos but my other daughter has a R56 S 2007 and Have found plenty information but nothing like your videos..It would be great if you ever come across clutch replacment on R56 S ..Thanks ounce again for your knowledge.
Ottimo lavoro ragazzo!!
Grazie
This was another great video Mod Mini. You are officially the Mini whisperer lol.
lot's of work
I will do mine today
thanks for the video
Don't own a mini. Watched the whole thing anyway. Nice job!
Best car mechanic videos on UA-cam without a doubt. I’m in Southern California but would drive to you to get work done 😀👍, no seriously, can we connect to get a clutch and other work done? 🙏🏼
Your video helped me a lot, though I took a 1.5 year break to finish the clutch job I was doing, so thank you very much. I am having other problems at this point, being I just finished the whole put back together today. I am wondering if you are willing to get back to me so I can get this all figured out and get back to driving my '03 cooper s. Thanks for everything, Matt.
Great Instructional video!
Thank you very much, I appreciate your great work.
i just got my cooper trans out , i did not pull the front end off of it sub frame only . 3 hr job to pull it .thanks for the video !
How do you get subframe out without taking off front end? I suppose it's possible with a couple guys.
@@ModMINI i was able to sneak out the two bolts in the bumper with a wrench pull out that thin strip of plastic across the front gives you enough room !
Good in depth video 👌
Great work! I wish I could send my car to you to help me fix it when something happens, you seem to know MINI inside out!
Just paid 2000 to replace my clutch it was worth it when I see how much work it intails
U r great mechanic
+Norma bond 2000 for just replacing or including price of the clutch too?
this just made me want to cry. I don't have that kind of money and my clutch just failed.
Exceptional video!
Really great videos!! Thanks
Fantastic Job.
This video is amazing.
Great videos! I've just done a clutch job without issue, apart from taking a bit longer than 32 minutes for each half! Most confusing bit - the steering wheel on the wrong side!
Takes longer than 64 minutes in real life...
@@ModMINI this rattle at start engine is normal? 30mins 10s.. or here at engine start ua-cam.com/video/0tIWjWv3H-0/v-deo.html
Binge watching videos because minis are a pain in the ass to work on but love em lol
WOW that is such a pain in the ass. i hope all my other parts and bushing last until my clutch goes out so i can just do a one time on all my seals, gaskets, and parts weather they need it or not and be done with it. very helpful video. this is my first mini i'm ussually a honda guy. oh and i love your trick with the gear oil. i hate the way it smells.
Jason Vue There is no bushing, just the throwout bearing, pressure plate and friction disk. For a Cooper S usually the clutch wears out first. The job isn't too bad if you take your time and think things through!
NICE WORK, thanks ALOT!
I don't own a mini but you made a great video
