Dowland's music is polyphonic, and that is what I hear -- independent melodic lines converging in harmony but maintaining linearity. In his own time, Dowland lamented the insensitivity of the "younger generation" of lutenists who preferred technical fireworks to contrapuntal subtlety. I'm afraid that classical guitar invites that kind of a bias, but you've avoided it. Also, Dowland always had the human voice in mind, and your nuanced tone conveys that texture. In a way, the guitar becomes transparent and one hears only the emotional message. So, standing ovation!
Certainly one of the best renditions one can get on a modern guitar ! Congratulations. Being an amateur lutenist, I cannot prefer the guitar to the Renaissance lute for Renaissance music. But I think it is good to play it on a guitar, too. Julian Bream made a great rendition on the lute, keeping part of his guitar technique and adding a beautiful sound linked with his lute which was mainly faithfull to the ancient ones. Paul O'dette was attracted by the lute thanks to Julian Bream and mainly changed his right hand technique. Guitarists do play all kind of music on their guitar .... Why not ? All the best !
