I actually like the original album of Jekyll and Hyde with Anthony Warlow as Jekyll/Hyde; but I _don’t_ so much the live version lol. Anthony never performed live, but in the album his vocals are incredible, especially during the screams of agony where he _actually_ sounds like he’s in pain- compared to some other versions of the musical. The live version mixes the songs around a lot and removes some good ones/adds confusing reprises that aren’t in the original album, making the live version more confusing. So I definitely recommend checking the 1995 album (not the 2005 one) out!
Idk I also just love gothic literature. There’s also a Frankenstein musical
YEAH! The Anthony Warlow version is so good… but the stage version butchered the structure, cut a bunch of the best songs like I Need To Know, Bring On The Men, and The World Has Gone Insane, altered others in bizarre ways like doubling the speed of part of the Board Of Governors scene, which resulted in the lines getting garbled, and even killed Lucy (who’s SUPPOSED TO LIVE IN THE ORIGINAL! It feels really gross that they kill her in the stage version, almost like they wanted to punish her for being a “dirty hooker”).
@@Dreigonix Wait... Lucy was supposed to live in the original? I always thought they didn't add her death because it was just a reprise of "Sympathy, Tenderness"
@@romanrudoy2674 Yeah! Lucy still sings A New Life, but it seems to be more just her longing for a better life rather than the ham-fisted waste of time it is in the stage version, and she doesn’t die at the end. It’s not like other songs don’t get reprises in the album version, so if they wanted Lucy to die, they would have had that on the album. For all we know, she gets her happy ending.
@@Dreigonix But "Alive" for instance does not get a reprise when Hyde kills the bishop, so I'm not really sure
@@romanrudoy2674 Yeah, them splitting Alive in two and showing the Bishop’s death was a change made for the stage version. At least the Bishop’s death is acknowledged in Murder Murder, though. If Lucy does die in the original, we’re certainly never told.
Anthony Warlow did it better
Omgosh Waaaay better…. Hasselhoff got the role and payed to have it taped, or it would not exist… but Warlow was a master.
I'd say Confrontation is probably the reason why I like the show so much. If they redone the ENTIRE show but kept that song, that's really all that would matter, honestly.
Nah man you got to keep facade, and murder too
Confrontation, as performed by Hasselhoff, was embarrassing. He kept changing direction as Jekyll and Hyde.
I will never be able to unsee Lucy's showgirl costume as "sexy Gaston" now, thanks.
Also, I had completely forgotten how ridiculously over-the-top Hoff's Hyde transformation was.
If you haven't heard it, 'Bring on the men' by Linda Eder, is very fun to listen to
Madame Corgi, it sounds a lot like Those Were the Days.
The Anthony Warlow recording is waaaaaaaaaaaaay better.
Well, tell us something we don't know. (Don't mean to be snarky, you're absolutely right.)
where can i see it? i tried to find it and, unfortunately, i couldnt
@@justyoutubechannel5965 There isn’t an actual performance recording, but there is a concept album: ua-cam.com/play/PLjXQ_rLk0ogaVqkK_mrtp1VYs51qk0oUN.html
@@lucy8079 thats a pitty, but thank you anyway❤️
This show is so cheesy and over-the-top with all its dramatics. I love it so damned much. I do wish that there was an officially released recording of the full show (not counting that one strangely good high school production that's floating around) with someone actually suited to the title roles playing that character(s), but it's incredibly easy to see how much fun Hoof's having in his roles (especially as Hyde) that no matter how ill-fitting the acting or singing gets I just can't help but smile. Imo, this one's done better in local theater productions. If there's somewhere in your area doing Jekyll and Hyde, I recommend paying the 15-20 dollars to go see it. The script's different, there's different songs in some places (RIP Good 'N Evil, you will be missed by me and me alone) and as a bonus you're supporting local theater things, which means that they may get enough money to be able to get rights for shows that are regular good and not just campy-good.
Ayy, now there's TWO versions of the strangely good highschool cast, and the newer one is strangely even better?!?

I hated this production, but I really love the music by Wildhorn. I only ever heard the soundtracks and seen what was on UA-cam, but my favourite cast album is the Complete Work with Anthony Warlow & Linda Eder. Songs like Facade, I Need To Know, His Work & Nothing More, Alive, The World Has Gone Insane and Confrontation are all really awesome, imo. I think this video is mostly Hoff-bashing (which I totally agree with), but the musical in itself is, to me, quite brilliant. Wildhorn's musical scores have always been more poppy than let's say, Sondheim, but this one, and The Scarlett Pimpernel for example are two scores I actually listen to a lot without the context of the show.
The girls of the night was also pretty good
Agreed. There's much good in the show but I'll never understand why the Hoff was cast
I kind of adore Man Who Laughs, Xcalibur and Death Note. Those are fun as Hell. It's the shows he doesn't rewrite and rewrite and rewrite and then, for good measure, gives it another rewrite on the hopes it'll get better is really where he shits the bed.. He's better with one and dones
@@LadyDragonbanewhy is this production not good
Love how his "Oh Dear God" sounds more like he forgot about a step and almost fell rather than being literally transformed into the embodiment of evil
Probably because it's a mix of cheese and melodrama. The Hoff edition is atrocious, but the concept recording with Warlow is marvelous. It's a production that lives and dies based on who the lead is. A good lead can elevate the material beyond it's pop-ish style roots and goofiness. Hoff takes the material and just...well...yeah.
This is no day at the beach.
It's delightful 90's cheese, and also a majority of it is actually made through a female gaze - hence why it has a decently big female fan base. Cringeworthy romance, fan fiction level sexual tension, big female power ballads - basically all the reasons fans love Wildhorn.
I mean i adore this musical, its my favourite, but i will forever hate Hoffman for what he did to the show. Also, thanks to Broadway the official script changed cutting out some of my fave songs from the musical. He was the death of the show, his singing was mediocre, and i didn't like the way he acted it.
The whole "Hoff only showed up for like three rehearsals " is funny because he apparently didn't show up for the camera rehearsal and another actor had to step in for Jekkyl/ Hyde 😂.
This musical isn't acted or sung as well as it should be by David hasselhoff but other performers do it so well
@Anjelica Snorcket Anthony warlows vocals in this is the moment give me chills
Coleen Sexton and Andrea Rivette were great in this cast. The Hoff was out of place and badly miscast. This was really a cursed show . It ran for more than 1,600 shows, never got good reviews and lost a boatload of money before closing. It wasn't a good musical. I've seen this live but just once.
The show is terribly written, the lyrics are stupid, the cheesiness is over the top, and most of the acting is awful.
I love it
@@mathewhutchins2539 Love your comment. I'm just fascinated by this piece, can't get enough of it and I can't explain why!! I'm a Rodgers and Hammerstein guy, I'm not supposed to like this stuff.
They cut one of the best songs in ‘Bring on the Men’ which is really stupid.
This is one of Wildhorn’s best (which isn’t saying much), but my god can he please stop the power ballad solos where the actor/actress stands still on stage and belts out some semi-high notes?
Other than that, I think Lucy and Utterson were really good (as was the whole cast really), but sadly the Hoff drags down this entire show, because Jekyll & Hyde is a show that NEEDS a strong lead, which isn’t the Hoff.
But, it was worth it for his overacting in the Transformation (‘WHAT IS THIS!? IS THIS DEATH!?), killing the priest in Alive, his faces during A Dangerous Game and his shirtless rip in Confrontation.
So, overall a 6/10. Without a different lead it’s probably a 7.5 but that’s it.
This is probably one of the worse performances which sucks since it’s the best video taped. It’s so poorly preformed by Hoff but he treats himself so seriously it ends up being hilarious.
Saw it with Robert Cuccoli and Linda Eder and it was beautiful
lucky!
Dislike. Unhelpful video. I was hoping for an in depth review of the play itself, like something you'd see on Shaffarillas, but all I got was 2 Aholes ripping on the Hoff.
Yeah, we did an actual episode on it where it’s more like that. In fact Schaffrillas* has been a guest a few times.

@@MusicalswithCheese Thank you. Apologies for the bluntness.
I really like this musical. Not the Hasselhoff version but the other one.
Mainly because of the leads voice.
I kinda liked Jekyll and Hyde because of the music that's it..... For real that's all I liked a few songs but that's it
Oh God, I always forget how awful the live version is.. they cut all the good songs and hoff isnt a good choice for the part at ALL dhhdjekekehddudjkelwh
This musical is ONLY remembered for "Confrontation" because that song is greatly written.
the music is good, this version of the show sucks
I think a better display of Jekyll and Hyde would be either of the cast recordings. Hasselhoff, with all due respect(which isn’t much), isn’t great.
the 1994 version with Andrew Warlow as hyde is actually good, and the songs aren't just endless.
Ikr I wish the full version of that musical is online
@@mariamnasser8807 sadly that is a concept album and never actually had a theatre version
Honestly, I really enjoyed any scene that Hasselhoff wasn't in with this recording. Hasselhoff was EXTREMELY awkward and butchered every song. He's a shit singer and a total ham. I was extremely annoyed that this production was likely an abridged version of the show (the original soundtrack has way more songs). I honestly really enjoy the music (on the original cast album, not this production), I really related to Lucy when I first found the show (I was dealing with EXTREME chronic suicidal ideation and self hatred at the time), and I liked that it discussed mental health in a victorian era setting (however poorly, but it probably fit for the setting of the show at least).
He did butcher every song
Bruh this vid is so filled with unnecessary hate :((
(I do prefer Rob Evan’s version a lot more tho)
i gotta say, i absolutely LOVE jekyll and hyde’s core idea, but i definitely agree with most of your critiques on it
This Is The Moment is entirely pointless, which i’m starting to think is intentionally awkward, like a guy stalling an injection
Board of Governors is SIX MINUTES LONG, and entirely just Jekyll getting denied by a group of “hypocrites”
David Hasslehoff is by far the last actor I’d think of to play *Jekyll & Hyde* of all characters
but i gotta love the fact they dedicated an entire 20 minutes to Utterson just asking Lucy to “ayo get out you’re gonna die” and then she didn’t and she died immediately
I love the Jekyll & Hyde story, that's why I'm here. This musical, any recording, drags a lot, especially in first the act (get to the transformation, dammit!) and not all the songs are great (Jekyll's fiancée and her father : who cares?)
In terms of Victorian horror, Sweeney Todd walks all over this, I mean the difference in quality is staggering!
Lol I love this musical! But, I like how you point out the flaws. The commentary is also great.
And, THAT is why the Anthony Warlow CD Version will always be better.
2:04 “why’s he wearing a white bow tie on a white shirt” um you guys are literally being so picky, and it’s pointed out by this comment that you have no idea what you’re talking about. Hasselhoff here is wearing what is called a “white tie ensemble” characterised among other things by, of-course, the white bow tie. it is the most established and most formal outfit of all menswear, it originated in the early 1800s and is still worn at very prestigious events today as a strict almost uniform type ensemble. Please, shut up if you don’t know what you’re talking about.
The musical is great, this production was bad
I love most of the soundtrack, but the show itself is abysmal.
When he scream sings Hyde, he sounds like Jim Carrey's scream from Ace Ventura Pet Detective.
We like it because of the epic songs, and the Hyde sets… plus confrontation mostly confrontation
The current MTI version was reworked and is such an improvement from this. Don’t get me wrong, this recording is my guilty pleasure. I’m so glad they fixed the licensed version.
I adore the score and Lucy’s character in a whole. I discovered this show in high school and I got addicted to it.
I saw this on stage when it was on tour around 25 years ago. I wish I knew who the lead was, but he was fantastic, not to mention charismatic. I love the music! I wish someone besides the Hoff was the one who was recorded.
I loved him in this & found it very entertaining. Way too much hate in here.
The only good version of this musical is the version done by high schoolers
That version is great. I also liked the first drafts, demo with Warlow and first tour, but anything newer, just no.
@@hypo.critter The 2012 wasn't too bad
"This Is The Moment" was one of the most useless songs in this musicals.
It makes me think of figure skating.
OMG! Are you guys like twelve? You're very irritating with your comments.
Ok
The original 90s score and songs were much more on point, funny and interesting - Bring on the Men was wonderful and they cut it to make it more family friendly.
I'm not really with you all on this one. David does a decent job as far as stunt casting goes, and he nailed all the hard high notes. And you make weird comments like "not once does he mention what this is the novel FOR" that's because he shouldn't have to, the entire plot revolves around him testing this drug on himself and that's literally the moment he goes through with it. Either you somehow missed the entire plot or you just wanted to be mean spirited for no reason
I'd love to see a video like this reacting to the George hearn and Angela Lansbury recording of Sweeney Todd XD these are great! So glad I rediscovered you jessworld!
Honestly I like it for the story, not the adaptation of it. The album version slaps sometimes, and its way better when you don’t have to watch the choreo.
Tbh the science is wack but come on, so is reanimating a fucking corpse and everyone likes Frankenstein. There’s a version I saw that was a play, not a musical and it was so much better.
I also love the concept album with Colm wilkinson
I listened to two songs from this and I hated all but about 1 minute of each song.
update i fucking love this musical
Missing In Nevada
Well that switched quickly. Glad you like it though! If you haven’t already, listen to the version with Anthony Warlow. It’s the complete works, so it’s completely different. The only version I will listen to
William Turner i have never listened to the David Hasselhoff version of this musical and i refuse to do do so. and i agree, Anthony Warlow’s performance is the best one. his version of Alive is originally what made me take a liking to J&H in the first place.
Missing In Nevada
Could you tell me the process of how you changed your opinion about this musical?
Brylxon yeah. i ended up doing a lot of research and finding a few bootlegs, i really enjoyed them. i also read the book. over all i just came to appreciate it for what it was, which is a flawed gem.
Jekyll and Hyde is fun to make fun of.
I like it because two songs are good (the RECORDED VERSIONS NOT THE FUCKING LIVE ONES SUNG BY THE HOFF) also I came across this vid because I was trying to see if anyone else thought david hasselhoff was terrible 😀
This feels like an SNL skit
For heaven's sake you two! Shut up!!!! Even though First off, Quit the constant profanity if you actually want an audience. Hasselhoff was an awful version of this character, the song in itself is brilliant. This Is the moment. Check out Anthony Warlow or Michael Ball singing this song and you might get a clue. The momemt in question is that where he realises he has the power to realise his dream. Whether it is possible to divide a personality into two distinct opposites and is successful to his detriment.
Russian version is pretty good (with English subtitles): ua-cam.com/play/PLDIarktnxUGjEw9ABn4ZfLV8seafIx9Uy.html
The show is amazing, Hasselhoff gives it a bad rep because he played the title role in the filmed version unfortunately. I’d say listen to the Anthony Warlow and/or Robert Cuccioli version, they were the best Jekyll and Hyde
I'll agree that most of the songs are forgettable. You ask "What is David H doing with his life? Demonstrably more than either of the people making the cheesy denigrating comments. FOUR YEARS and over 1,500 performances. I welcome a link to your performances.
You've both read the book and understand the academic discourse it spawned as to societal values, homosexuality and the inherent duality in the human character. Of COURSE it's about him ...his celebrity is the biggest. Whether he did it this way or that, this is not an easy show to sing and he sang it well, in addition to playing, what I would equate to a psychotic meth-head in the first years of addiction. I thought it was fitting and generous that Hasselhoff gave thanks to the cast and audience, acknowledging their "spoon feeding him" on his long journey from a man on a beach with a talking car. You don't understand THEATRE if you can't look past a pop-media image to see the human and realize how insanely terrifying that would be ...theatre folk are a tight group and performers of that calibre would not share the stage with him had he not been able to carry his weight come to it authentically.
Y'all need to get a copy of Jekyll & Hyde: Together Again ...satire spoof film from the 80s.
Also ...compare Ragtime the movie (1982) with Ragtime the Musical (the 90s I think it was SO FORGETTABLE ...all different music). I saw the first in the theatre when it came out ...and went EIGHT more times during its initial release ...bought the LP Soundtrack. Then the CD and now bought the movie from UA-cam or Amazon. I'll subscribe to you so I'll know when you get around to either of those. CheerZ
Ofc Warlow did it better but I still enjoyed Hasselhoffs version too, just to have it seen played on stage like this. Idk, I thought he didn't do too bad.
But anyway, I admit I often start listening from Transformation when listening to the concept album lol
Or from Bring on the man! What a banger
Don’t care who sings in this musical.
One of the longest evenings of my life. A barrage of shouting and emoting.
Can’t believe anyone enjoys it even with the best cast in the world.
A night to forget.
i honestly love the album, the russian live version and the 2012 version, but thus one, i do not like this one... it cuts of some hits like bring on the man, strippers dancing and singing, what a number,
and the stage is so small too
Bro, during the wedding scene they all looked like Barbie dolls! 🤣 I dunno why
Is it bad that I’ve seen a high school production of this that was better than Hasslehyde
"This musical could fall off the face of the earth"
I wish you could fall off the face of the earth.
Okay but the songs are admittedly amazing
4:26 Diarrhea is like a storm raging inside you
so, white bow tie because he is wearing tails, ie white tie.
I am currently in a production of Jekyll and Hyde, playing the man himself. I do love this musical with my whole heart. Hasslehoff DOES NOT do justice to this amazing show. I strongly encourage you to watch what little of the Robert Cuccoili production is recorded. This cast is unfortunately the only one available to watch all the way though (besides some low value productions that also are subpar). This role is insanely hard to play (coming from the guy who is currently playing him) and when done right, the show can be magical. For instance “This is the Moment” can be an amazing, heartfelt song about defeating the odds and fulfilling your dreams. If the part is played with enough intensity, the show can hit hard. Anyways this is my favorite musical and I hate when it gets dogged on for Hasslehoffs horrible performance
This Is so funny!
I never knew David hasselhoff had a decent voice, his acting is low tier, but I was pleasantly surprised with his voice.
Your bias has totally blinded you to what the show was! The quality of the show - IT IS MEANT FOR STAGE and is not meant to be science. Robert Luis Stephenson was no scientist either.
It saddens me to see such theatrical ignorance masquerading as a you tube channel
Your clutter needs to be blocked
Glad you liked the video! Don’t forget to like and subscribe 😊
I only like the music and the book, that’s what I like about J&H
I prefer the Constantine Maroulis version of the show then the original
Einfach nur Weltklasse 💗❤️
💪
I assistant stage managed a run of this show. The job lasted 14 years yet, according to the calendar it was only 4 months. Every paycheck reinforced my belief that I was a cheap VV|-|0RE that would do anything for a buck!
