우리나라는 원하지 않게 동양철학인 음양사상에 지배를 받아 모든 환경을 이분법 적으로 해석하게 된것같다. 고대 중국인들도 모든 환경을 음양사상에 기반하여 해석했다. 한편 독일의 철학자인 헤겔은 정반합 이론을 주장 하였는데 그 내용은 다음과 같다. 이 세상 모든 물체들은 모순적 면모를 지닐 수 밖에 없으며 모순적인 면모을 탈피하기 위하여서는 버릴 것은 버리고 취할 것은 취한 상태인 '합'을 만들어 가야 한다. 그러나 합 또한 모순적 한계를 가질 수 밖에 없기 때문에 '합'은 다시 '정'이 된다. 이러한 식으로 반복하다 보면, 진리에 가까워질 수 있다는 것이다. 음과 양이 조화를 이루면 불교에서 치우치지 아니하는 바른 도리인 중도(中道)를 이루게 될 터인데 세상은 서로의 이해 관계에 치우쳐 쉽게 합을 이루지 못한다고 한다. 컴퓨터는 1과 0밖에 모른다. 음과 양이다. 그러나 무수한 데이터가 쌓이면 1이라고 할수도 0이라고 할수도 없는 상태에 이른다. ‘두개의 나선’은 컴퓨터 프로그램으로 작곡되었고 그 데이터 들을 악보 사보 프로그램으로 옮겨 적었으며 가야금 연주자 박경소가 연주를 한다. 두개의 다른 박자와 템포를 가진 알고리즘 작곡 엔진이 사용되었다. 이 두개의 서로 다른 나선이 합이 되는 지점에서 관객에게 중도에 이른 무아지경을 선사 할 수 있다면 좋겠다. 공연에는 지난 10년간 박진현 교수와 개발하여온 전자장구의 최신 버전인 DIY빛 장구가 사용된다.
Korean tends to analyze the entire environment in dichotomy. I guess it is a part of the oriental philosophical thinking of Yin-Yang and the way of ancient Chinese thought. All objects in the world not only have contradictory aspects but a ‘Synthesis’ which rids itself of the extemporaneous; however ‘synthesis’ goes back to ‘thesis’ as it also has a counterbalance. When views this way, we can get closer to the truth. This is a theory from the German philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel. Moderation, the righteous way for everything in Buddhism, can be achieved through yin-yang harmony. In the same way, computers only knows 1 and 0. This can be seen as yin and yang. Inside of the computer, when all the data accumulated, it becomes ambiguous and cannot be reducted back to either 1 or 0. The Two Spirals was composed by a computer program before being migrated to a score program for print out. The Two Spirals incorporated two algorithmic composition engines that each have their own tempo and meter. At the meeting point of the two spirals, one experiences Nirvana. For the concert, the latest electronic DIY Light Janggu by Park, Jin-Hyun will be used for accompaniment. Park and I worked together for the last decade to improve the electronic janggu based on a modified Korean traditional instrument.
