Göschenen, at 3300 ft above sea level in Kanton Uri, is situated on the North side of the Gotthard tunnel, which is more than 9 miles long. The Gotthard route is an major transit route between the north and south of Europe. Many trains, freight and passengers, make use of this famous route across the Alps. The grade of 2,6% is especially severe for the freight trains, most of which are doubleheaded. Some even have "helper" locos at the rear which are attached at Erstfeld and decoupled at Göschenen. Freight trains are directed to the sidings to wait for passenger trains to overtake on this busy line. The service to Andermatt is provided by the Furka-Oberalp Bahn through the Schöllenschlucht.
The weather forecast: Heavy snowfall, with possible sunshine at the end of the film. The recordings were made in February and March 2000 with a digital camera and are digitally mastered.
We only use original sound recordings, without any additional music or commentary.

Thank you very much for the great Pictures. I've driven countless Times over the Gotthard. Just the last few Days before the opening of the Colon, through the Mountains, I went down to Ticino and back a few Times

This really captures the feel of the place. The trains were virtually the same as this in 1977 when I stayed a night there in a hotel with a great view of the railway. 2 Nights later I was home in England after being on 45 trains across Europe in 2 weeks!

only for YOUR information : there are not exactly the same Lokomotiven : Re 4/4 ....Re 6/6 and also Ae 6/6 .... to day they have other numbers : series 420 , 620 .... I think this is a very interessting document !!!! today all the trains gos via the ,,Basistunnel,, ..... this interessting time , will ever come back !!!! thank 's for this very nice video !!!!
