Out of the park. Love my Z8 and now will be supercharged. A+++For Nikon and this is excellent to hear the photographers who, in the end will use this excellent upscalable product until the hardware permits it. Again 💪💪💪💪💪 for Nikon, you are the best!!!
Today my Z8 will arrive at home. I’m so exited to unbox my new camera. And the first thing after charging the battery is to install the new firmware. Next weekend, I will start a few photo projects in my beautiful home area in the south-west of Germany. Thank you Matt for the exiting news in this video. Best Regards, Thorsten.
@@MattIrwinPhotography Hi Matt. Most of the time I’m shooting with the 1.8 S prime lenses (20, 24, 35, 50, 85mm). But I have also the holy trinity zoom lenses as part of my gear. I love your channel. It is always a pleasure to watch. Greetings to Australia!
This was more than expected! Thanks. As a user of Nikon and Sony top cameras, I just love how Nikon has released these major improvements in such a short period of time. Sony however just refuses to give its users (especially a1 users) minor improvements. That is why I’m looking to part ways with Sony. Sony can learn a great deal from Nikon in this area.
Believe it or not, yesterday I was thinking about "when will I see a new FW update for my Z8?".... I woke up this morning and there it is. Superb! And I was not expecting the Pixel Shift as in my new Zf. I'm so glad I kept on trusting Nikon!
@@natedagreat90 Yep, figured that one out because of the Xspeed 6's limitations. That's why I got the Z8 and my Z7ii is now just a backup landscape camera and my Z6ii was converted to full-spectrum for Astro and infrared photography.
@ThePinoyAggie you would think that there would be at least one major firmware update considering the 2 processors like making the tracking box smaller or improving the af algorithm algorithms don't require any extra hardware capabilities just like I don't need to update my brain to learn new things who knows maybe firmware 2.0 is in the works
Looking forward to these features creeping up into the Z9.. Nikon camera as a platform is the thing. Z8 as a remote is now a consideration for me with auto capture, I was never comfortable leaving Z9's out on the range..

I bought my z8 at Christmas. Nikon had a one day sale going and the deal was just too good to pass up. I am excited about this update. I bought the 180-600mm lens last year and I've been using it a lot. I got my first picture of an owl and an otter on the same day with that lens on my z8. If I can get this firmware today's today I may go back to the wildlife refuge tomorrow and give it a try. 46 mp is enough for me. I don't know if I really need the pixel shift. I don't even know if my computer can handle a file that large.
I would have been happy with Shutter Sounds and Exposure Delay 😂 I’ll need a whole day to go through this list 😳 I did not expect Auto Capture and Pixel Shift - amazing! 🤗
I love my Z8. This is a great firmware update I’d still like to see 1. Focus Shift, the ability to specify start and end position so the camera calculates the number of images based on step size 2. 30 and 60 fps RAW shooting 3. Image recognition and tracking for Insects. Wishful I know
I recently purchased the z88. And I think that camera is absolutely amazing I have the d5600 and the z6. And I'm letting my friends use the Z6 and the d5600 to get into photography. The fact they brought these amazing features to the Z8 definitely does increase the value of the camera. I've even used pixel shift a few times and it's amazing results
ECSTATIC TO BE WRONG Not long ago on this channel I lamented what seemed to be a lack of updates for the Z8. while the Z9 press head with several updates, and the ZF did the same. As a Z8 owner I am super excited as you would say that all these great features have come to my camera. I actually started to wonder if I would sell it or trade it in for a new Z6 III because the Z8 seem to be forgotten. It now looks like those worries can be set aside.
The bird mode is appreciated and the pixel shift addition is shocking. I didn't think the hardware was capable. It looks like Nikon designed for it and just had to wait for the software to catch up. I'm looking forward to taking some 180 megapixel landscapes this summer.
I ordered one Z8 yesterday and will probably receive it next week. I've got my Z9 and am happy with it. But now when the Z8 has mostly the same specifications I decided to have one "spare" camera that is a little lighter than the Z9. It will be interesting to see if Z9 will get another major firmware upgrade.

Probably waiting to see the potential Z6iii before getting anything but great to see the Z8 growing
been using high res zoom no my z9 mapped to manual focus ring for months, it's so good ! turn any prime into a 2x zoom :O turn the 24-120 into a 24-240 :O
Nikon is being SO smart. $4000 is an upper limit for many hobbiests - the large majority of us will not bump up to the Z9 prices. But it’s in Nikon’s best interest to boost the hardware available for the hobbiest because as we have more features, we love photography more, and buy more lenses. You’ll always have the business of the professional photographers. Nikon is doing a great job of giving the serious hobbiest the best tools … keeping photography alive by investing in the hardware for those who are NOT professionals.
I just completed all of Nikon School UK's courses on mastering the Z8 and its autofocus with Ricci Chera and now this happens! I'm not complaining, I'm thrilled, but trying to remember everything the camera can do so that I can invoke a helpful technology for a particular shot is going to be quite demanding! If only there were some way (maybe an AI phone app?) of stating what you want to achieve and it coming up with suggestions.
Thank you for all that you do for photography and for those of us who are passionate about it! BTW, I’ve been using a Z9 and S lenses for two years and absolutely LOVE IT! Thank you, again.
Great news, from the comments I've seen there are no issues so I'll do my Z8 later, some really cool stuff there I think I'll use. One thing I would like to be able to do (and really don't understand why I can't) is to output in-camera multiple exposures in RAW. Used to love doing this, you never really knew what you were going to get but I produced some great stuff this way. After all, my 17yr old D200 has always been able to do this.
I love my z 8 at the great age of 70 the none battery grip works for me weight wise. I notice from the first photos the quality over my z 7.2 However the firm wear add on for the z 7.2 has placed it firmly back into my camera bag. I do meet the odd pro and interested to hear they are leaving their Sony membership for the Nikon . I am in England so having just purchased some new recording gear first up on you tube was firmware for z 8….. really once the whole package sinks in I will be able to really test my creativity and not I feel for the want of lacking in my work. Thanks for the work you put in.
I do not own a Z8 but I like how Nikon thinks. I own a Z9 and the two improvements I can think of are: shooting in RAW with pre-capture (even at 10 to 15 FPS, and finally if Nikon could figure out a way of fixing the AF issue when focussing far and not being able to come back closer quickly to focus on the small bird in the blurry foreground (hope this is clear)especially with long lens. Overall Go Nikon!
I’m so happy about this and truly grateful to Nikon for looking after their customers. I was going to buy another Z9 as a backup but now most definitely going to get a Z8 and save money to put towards glass. Itching to get my hands on the 35mm 1.2 when and if it arrives 😍
I have got my Z8 since the end of May now, and I'm really happy to see that there is such a huge update. Especially since I own a Z 180-600 for 2 weeks now. The only drawback is still that my portable studio flashes don't work in HSS with the Z8 anymore. But I am on a business trip at the moment, so I couldn't test the flashes with the new firmware. But I don't have high hopes that they will work flawlessly now. Thank you for your great video, Matt!
I have a Z8 since June and I love it after my D750 which I also loved. I am very excited about these new features coming up with FW update, especially pixel shift and bird AF ✌️✌️✌️ looking forward to try them in real life 😎
Wow… I love my Z8… this firmware update is amazing. I need to go to bed, but I will be doing this update in the morning. You know that square box line thickness surprised me. I really need that for baptism photos I take at church. The currant line weight disappears in the horrible lighting and dark colors. Nikon continues to surprise me. 😂
Don’t expect anything AF related - the Expeed 6 processor has already seen massive improvements over time and most likely they did already everything they could. A lot of the processing is done in hardware and there’s only so much you can do with software - and no, having two processors doesn’t change the capabilities of the hardware pipeline. I don’t see however why pixel shift wouldn’t be possible.
I love the firmware update, the bird subject detection mode and the new cycle AF mode feature are game changers. Now if we can just get RAW pre capture it will be a perfect camera for my needs.
Great news for my Z8.. Only 1 month old ! Loving the pixel shift. Don't know what Pre-Capure is yet, but sounds exciting. Thankyou Mark and Nikon ! Well done !
Hey Matt, another great video! Have my Z8 updated already, and it is just great! being a Landscape first, then wildlife, they answered 2 "wish list" items off the bat with exposure delay, which I really liked on my Z7ii in doing tripod landscape shots, and then bird detect, which is better than the "auto" detect subject detection. This was a giant WIN for Nikon in my book, and I am really happy they are back either near the top or on top. For the nay sayers who were touting Nikon was going to go under...they are way behind, etc......stick this in your pipe and smoke it! :-). Again, great video Matt. Cheers
I love he fact that Nikon is putting everything possible in these cameras without artificially holding stuff back for business reasons. I think it's a winning strategy as it respects the customers. The fact that the Z9 gets the newest stuff first is enough of a differentiator to make it worth getting, even if the Z8 will eventually get it as well. Brilliant stuff Nikon.
Brilliant stuff Matt. Yes, really love the way Nikon is putting the Z8 & Z9 at the forefront and keeping them there with these firmware updates. The one feature I really wish they would include is the ability to use Pre-Capture with RAW, not just JPEGs. Olympus are doing this, I understand, with their ProCapture on the OM-1 Mk1 & II. I would rather have Nikon Pre-Capture with RAW at 30fps than 120fps JPEGs.
….I do own a Z8, love it and just upgraded the firmware….this camera is the cat’s meow for me….I use my Z7 for Astrophotography and await the software of astro-capture software to add the Z8.
This is very exciting for me. I just picked up a Z macro lens (the cheaper 50mm MC) and pixel shift for macro is super super super super super super super excitingly super! A few weeks ago I started building a little macro studio in the corner of my home office, and BOOM, now I have pixel shift?!?!?! This is exciting. Also, the improvements to Tether NX?!?!?! This is perfect. Coming from the Z6ii (ie., almost no updates), this is new territory for me. ❤❤📷📷
I got the Z8 less than a week ago. Was wondering a lot if I should do so or stick with my Z6 II, but went for it, besides the price. Just a few days after, I am getting an update, that brings so many amazing features. Things, that I saw in Z9 and wanted, but realized i won't get, because the Z9 is the flagship. And Nikon gives them to us for free. I was happy with my Z6 II but envied Canon and Sony users a bit. Even was thinking of switching, but stayed because I love the Z glass so much. And now I am so happy with my choice. Well done Nikon, really well done. You've made me an even happier customer and gave me some great bragging points over my Sony using friends. :)
@@MattIrwinPhotography I hope it pays off for them and they carry on the same way. And Matt, thank you for the video and the great content you are creating. Highly appreciated!
Wonderful new features!! Especially the bird AF!! Would love to see multiple exposures in RAW instead of Jpg. For several competitions you need to make them in camera. But it gives me so much less options in post production. I could do them in raw on my D850. Too bad not on my Z8. Hope Nikon listens!! 😊
I don’t own a Z9 but this gets me extremely excited for the next FW update for my Z9. I am waiting to see what Nikon does for the Olympics before I decide on buying another Z9 or Z8. If they surprise us with a new variation of the Z9, I will be all in! 👍🏾🙏🏾😎. 🏴🇸🇪🇹🇹
Great as always Matt, Z8 users will be very happy with getting features from both the Z9 and Z8. Now everyone can start complaining about when the next major firmware upgrade for the Z9 will occur. Wish you well - Jeff
Hello Matt, SO GOOD TO hear about this amazing update to a great camera. Well done to Nikon for both a great System in the Z system and giving us all such a great update.
Great to see some new improvements and features. The big miss for video was not adding shutter angle so you can lock your fps to a shutter angle. To many times I have quickly switched from 24 to 60 fps and for got to change the shutter from 48 to 120. Or to have the ability for go from a 180• angle to 270• or 135• to get a different effect without having to do math.
Hi Matt, right now I am so excited, as I do own a Z8, I have been waiting for this new firmware update since auto capture & bird icon was released to the Z9's version 4.0 update. Yes, I do shoot wildlife and this is a huge big deal for me, as I am waiting to plan my next African Safari for 2025. I am also waiting on my Burnt Orange ZF camera to arrive. I am a huge fan of your channel and you have definitely had a major influence on my Nikon purchases and future choices. Thanks for all the hard work that you so diligently put in for us to enjoy and chew on. 👍👋😊😊
Hi Matt, I went on my first Safari to South Africa in 2014, to Kapama Private Game Reserve, in a place called Hoedspruit. This was absolutely brilliant, but I wasn't a wildlife photographer enthusiast . I will probably be heading to Pangolin on the Chobe in Botswana. I have acquired the Nikon Z 70-200 VR S lens, Z 180- 600 F5.6/6.3 lens, 24- 70 F/2.8 lens and a 14-24mmF/2.8 lens. Wishfully thinking I would like the Z 135mm F/1.8 Plena or the Z85mm F/1.2 As you can see Matt, I'm an enthusiast who loves good glass especially when the end result is satisfactory, and you've helped me see that.@@MattIrwinPhotography
Amazing collection. Amazing adventures, you certainly have amazing tools, and I can see the Plena and 85 having a place in your kit. Very good for lowlight situations :) @@Brian-xo3mk
I think Nikon updating the firmware of the Z8 now may point to the Z 6 III being released relatively soon, as it will likely come with some of these features out of the box and of course from a marketing perspective it wouldn’t be great if the lower end model has them a while before
Very happy with the update! Lovin' my Z8 even more now. It almost feels like a Z8ii. Glad they added Exposure Delay Mode. I use it for my landscape photography when using a tripod.
Great Video Matt .. I am so excited about Bird AF and I downloaded 2.0 today >> been using Animal AF up until now fantastic after the Z7.. Bird will be next level >>Good times
I'm an underwater photographer and use my Z8 in a Nauticam housing. I suspect dedicated Bird Detect will work just as well for "Fish Detect". And of course expanded pre-capture likely will be very relevant underwater. Way to go, Nikon!!
@@MattIrwinPhotography Thanks! I use the Nikkor Z 24-50mm lens for most wide-angle shots, and the new Nikkor Z 105mm lens for macro shots underwater. The Z8 is a terrific camera for underwater photography, and the new firmware upgrade is going to make it even better!
The update is great to bad it broke the tethering to lightroom. It no longer connects. I thought it was an issue with my camera till I connected my Z6 and Z6ii and it connected perfectly. Hope they fix it soon. Thanks Nikon for the Z8ii
If Z6III wont be with stacked sensor, I will buy second Z8, till then Z7II will have to be second camera. I hope some AF improvements for portrait photography are made in this FW update. Love new shutter sounds.
Nice, but Nikon still needs to add a "save" feature to the Custom and Shooting banks so you can always start at your preferred settings. Not having it makes it almost useless compared to the U1, U2, and U3 of Z7ii and Z6ii. Like a throwback to some earlier era when the tech wasn't possible. This is 2024. Give us options.
Brilliant news, great video, thx! It’s very clever, for a couple of reasons, that the Z8 gets the upgrades first...Z8 owners were probably feeling left behind on updates and now they have several things Z9 users don’t, perfect. The other reason may be that any new cameras to be released are bound to have pixel-shift etc included and to have features that the Z9 doesn’t have will make their release seem particularly special! I’m pretty sure in time the Z9 will probably get everything. Exciting times.
Super exited because recently got my z8 and now I got more features ti play with Would be nice if you make a video using this updates especially the pixel shit and the auto capture!!
Fantastic rundown of this fantastic firmware update, Matt! I can't wait to try in out tomorrow with some stills and video. I know we have most of this with the Z9 and Zf ... but it's so great to have it in the Z8, which has become my most-used camera overall.
Of course, it's difficult to say. But after this update to my beloved Z8, my 3rd party GPS stopped working. Any chance that this will be handled with a new firmware update?
I gotta say as a Nikon shooter, I feel like Nikon is really taking care of us. Nikon continues to deliver spectacular updates, all for free!
Except for z6ii users feel bad for them not one major firmware update since launch despite 2 processors.

So glad this improves your real world photography. What lenses are you using in the church?
Nikon!!! Don't forget the older cameras like a z7II....there must be potential in hardware for updating, come on Nikon!!
Nikon is dong what Fujifilm used to do, which is a good thing to build customer trust and satisfaction; call it Nikon Kaizen .... great to see.
I have just bought a Z8 and love it coming from a D810
Have a Z8...love the camera and the support that Nikon is providing.
Cheers
Thank Matt. Thanks Nikon. Z8 now really feels like a baby Z9. For free... love it
I love he fact that Nikon is putting everything possible in these cameras without artificially holding stuff back for business reasons. I think it's a winning strategy as it respects the customers. The fact that the Z9 gets the newest stuff first is enough of a differentiator to make it worth getting, even if the Z8 will eventually get it as well. Brilliant stuff Nikon.
My Z8 firmware is updating as you speak. Thanks Nikon!
Yep it certainly feels like Nikon are working very hard to bring great value to their cameras.
@@MattIrwinPhotography I hope it pays off for them and they carry on the same way.
And Matt, thank you for the video and the great content you are creating. Highly appreciated!
Like a kid on Christmas opening up my 2.0 updates making the Zed 8 a whole new camera!! Thanks Matt and thanks Nikon!
I think this firmware update might just be the tipping point from my D850. Thanks Matt
I have the Z9..Z8…Zf…Z50… this firmware update is a welcome thing I’m completely overjoyed…Nikon Rocks…. Thanks Matt
Pleasure Stephen, we are truly in an amazing place at this point :)
Absolutely brilliant from NIkon Love it
Great as always Matt, Z8 users will be very happy with getting features from both the Z9 and Z8.
Thanks Brian, a pleasure, and that means a lot to me :) Where are you heading in Africa, and which are your current lens choices for the trip?
Hi Matt, I went on my first Safari to South Africa in 2014, to Kapama Private Game Reserve, in a place called Hoedspruit. This was absolutely brilliant, but I wasn't a wildlife photographer enthusiast . I will probably be heading to Pangolin on the Chobe in Botswana. I have acquired the Nikon Z 70-200 VR S lens, Z 180- 600 F5.6/6.3 lens, 24- 70 F/2.8 lens and a 14-24mmF/2.8 lens.
Wishfully thinking I would like the Z 135mm F/1.8 Plena or the Z85mm F/1.2
As you can see Matt, I'm an enthusiast who loves good glass especially when the end result is satisfactory, and you've helped me see that.@@MattIrwinPhotography
Amazing collection. Amazing adventures, you certainly have amazing tools, and I can see the Plena and 85 having a place in your kit. Very good for lowlight situations :) @@Brian-xo3mk
I think Nikon updating the firmware of the Z8 now may point to the Z 6 III being released relatively soon, as it will likely come with some of these features out of the box and of course from a marketing perspective it wouldn’t be great if the lower end model has them a while before
Matt , I just cannot understand the algorithm of UA-cam! You should have a million subscribers if it was based on your quality output🤔
Thanks Chris, that means a lot.
Very happy with the update! Lovin' my Z8 even more now. It almost feels like a Z8ii. Glad they added Exposure Delay Mode. I use it for my landscape photography when using a tripod.
Totally agree!
Great Video Matt .. I am so excited about Bird AF and I downloaded 2.0 today >> been using Animal AF up until now fantastic after the Z7.. Bird will be next level >>Good times
I have the Z8 and love it. With this new FW, I am very excited to try them out.
Awesome review! Does pre-release work with back button focus too?
I don't use back button focus, but I suspect it does :)
Excellent update. If you could have a word with Nikon, Matt. Ask them for RAW pre capture and a temporary fps boost button (A9III). Thx for the video.
Just updated my FW. Going to test some things out tomorrow. Nikon ftw!
I'm an underwater photographer and use my Z8 in a Nauticam housing. I suspect dedicated Bird Detect will work just as well for "Fish Detect". And of course expanded pre-capture likely will be very relevant underwater. Way to go, Nikon!!
I would love to hear more about what you do underwater, that sounds very interesting ... :)
I would like to hear what you have to say about the latest Z8 firmware upgrade 2.01.
It seems to be fixing problems I've never had.
The update is great to bad it broke the tethering to lightroom. It no longer connects. I thought it was an issue with my camera till I connected my Z6 and Z6ii and it connected perfectly. Hope they fix it soon. Thanks Nikon for the Z8ii
The only thing missing from the Z9 and Z8 is RAW pre-capture. That would be everything I want.
If Z6III wont be with stacked sensor, I will buy second Z8, till then Z7II will have to be second camera. I hope some AF improvements for portrait photography are made in this FW update. Love new shutter sounds.
Fantastic news - many thanks
Thank you too!
Thanks Matt. Excited to upgrade this firmware and try out these new features!
Super exited because recently got my z8 and now I got more features ti play with
Would be nice if you make a video using this updates especially the pixel shit and the auto capture!!
Fantastic rundown of this fantastic firmware update, Matt! I can't wait to try in out tomorrow with some stills and video. I know we have most of this with the Z9 and Zf ... but it's so great to have it in the Z8, which has become my most-used camera overall.
Yeah Ray it is rather EPIC !!!
Need to add exposure highlight warnings in the EVF... for manual shooters.
Exciting updates. Just updated mine.
Yep it is a big deal :)
I upgrade now my z8 to 2.0, Im so exited about the new features
Have been after pixel shift for awhile for archival stuff and it’s finally here.
Looking forward to trying the pixel shift. Hopefully it works well
I plan to do a pixel shift specific video :)
Great! I'm going to have to wait to get home from work to install it. Looking forward to the video
Would love to see your pixel shift video!@@MattIrwinPhotography
Of course, it's difficult to say. But after this update to my beloved Z8, my 3rd party GPS stopped working. Any chance that this will be handled with a new firmware update?
We have 4 Z8's Love them, I really think they are better than our z9
