I just finished doing nearly the exact same build. Found a used endless pool online ($2000 + $1200 S&H) I spent 9 months building it in my spare time, 100% my own labor. I sunk my pool partially underground to create the same bench seating seen in this video. I used a solid filled dry stacked block wall and capped it with tile. The concrete, rebar, mini shed for the pump and the various trips to the hardware store added up to about $2500. I also had to buy the liner, new hydraulic hoses & pay Endless Pools for access to their system etc ($1500) & 10 gallon of hydraulic fluid ($350.) Total cost was approx $8000.... for a pool in my own back yard!!!!
The whole pool fit in a single uHaul pod box for transportation. It is probably too much volume to fit into a ¾ ton truck bed. Two or three trips with the truck or a small haul trailer would be big enough.
The pool system is pretty straight forward and was not difficult to figure out. Endless pool has a guy on staff that specializes on used systems, and can help walk you through any troubleshooting. The kit pool was ten years old and was not in perfect condition, but nothing a typical handyman dad can't overcome. Many of the pool system components had been recently replaced, so I did not have those replacement cost to pay upfront. However, it is clear that money will be spent over the years replacing worn down parts.
The most difficult step in the installation was the pool liner. Aligning the corners properly and smoothing out the surface was quite difficult to do on your own. It felt like I was trying to neatly fold fitted bed sheet that happen to be huge, heavy & semi-water filled. I have a sunken center section that made the alignment harder.
The cost to run the pump and electric heater has been higher than I expected. I fully insulted the pool with 2 inch rigid insulation; both under the concrete and on the outside of the metal wall panels. The pool is always covered when not in use. The electric usage for my house jumped up the same amount as it did when I was running my A/C all day long. We have had cold weather for the month of May & have been running the system extra long to keep it heated.
Swimming in the pool isn't like swimming in a lap pool, and nothing like swimming at the beach. The feeling is more like swimming upstream in a river. It takes a bit of focus to maintain your position in the pool; if you wander a foot to the left or right you slip out of the water flow. If you move a couple feet front or back you'll run into the benches of the pool. Breaststroke is a bit odd; I have to stay perfectly centered to keep my toes from hitting the benches & rising up to breath pushes you back a foot or two each time.
The pool is only 3000 gallons. The cost for pool chemicals is relatively minor. The local pool stores will test your water for free and sell you the exact volume of chemical you need to keep the pool chemistry in balance. Instructions included.
My 9 year old son absolutely loves the pool. He is in the pool for an hour or two EVERY day.... me too :) Overall it is the best investment I've made.

Very nice! i think the pit is well worth the cost. I'm thinking of putting one in my basement but don't like that it would set 4 feet above ground.

Your video was really helpful. Thank you for posting. We are in the process of possibly getting an Endless Pool off of cragi's list and, like you, will have to uninstall and reinstall ourselves. I saw in one of the comments, you said you have an 8'X14' pool. Is that measuring from the outside edge or is that the swimming area?

Nice video. I'm also trying to purchase a used endless pool at huge discount. I have to drive a way to pick it up and was wondering what size trailer or truck would I need to have to transport a pool? I take it that the panels all come apart. I would also like to ask you what was the cost of just the liner rather than buying pump and liner together. I was considering buying just a liner from an online outlet that specializes in smaller liners that fit the size of an endless pool. There priced around 3 to five hundred dollars and l thought it might be an option. Thanks again for the video and sharing your pool project. Very nice pool setup. Thanks Steve stamper

We used a 16 foot trailer and did 2 loads. We also put had some stuff in the back of the truck. If you did it in one load you would have to pile it high. I think just the liner was around $1,000. These liners are very good quality and I would not trust any other brand since these liners need to fit perfect.

THanks, we have a pool that is in pieces in our garage, I got it off craigslist for about $3500 and like you we had to tear it out and transport it. Question...did you order a new liner and main pump? Did you have to replace any of the benches or have them polished or remove any rust? Any issues with hydraulic fluid leaks or anythign like that? Can you access all the pump stuff OK? Our heater is gas...would you stick with electric again? What accessories would you suggest?

I ordered a new liner and the pump that hooks onto the blower fan that is in the water. The benches where in good shape. If anything needs cleaned just use some bleach. You could use some polish on the panels if they need it. All the hydraulics worked perfect with no issues. I can access all the pumps and fittings. Make sure you can access all the fittings. I have had one break after install. I was told most of the PVC fittings should last about 10 years. If you can run a gas line it will be cheaper to heat. But with an electric heater it is easier to install. I do have two mirrors the one that is in front is more useful then the one underneath. You can mount the cover on either end. I prefer to have the cover at the rear so it is out of the way.

What size pool and depth do you have. Was thinking of a 7'x12' but not sure if there is a concern of hitting your feet on the rear bench when swimming. I'm 6'.

Mine is 8x14. I have never hit the sides. So 7 would be fine. I have never hit the back or kicked the bench. If I don't have it turned up fast enough I will swim into the front. But that is my fault and not because the pool is to small. I don't think you will have any issues with 7x12.

What is the monthly operating cost of a pool like this including chemicals and gas / electric?
Just roughly? Thanks from all of us here in Kalamazoo, MI !

I use electric to heat it. No idea on price. 5.5 KW heater runs about 2 hours per day. Maybe $30 a month? As for chemicals I just use 1 cup of bleach every other time I use it.

10 grand isn't bad for your setup. Add a ton of plants and make sure they are on an autofeeder so you don't have to swim through aquatic roots

Did your builder think you were nuts? You need to get some tri posters on the wall!

    • @KeithRanly

My pool was no big deal for him. After seeing some of his other houses with entertainment rooms that had 4 levels of seats in front of the TV. The basement had to be 15-20 feet deep.
I would love to find some big Triathlon posters. If you know of anyplace to find some good ones let me know.
