This video is perfect because I’m from New Jersey too and I’m going to UMiami this fall semester so it was good to hear about the good and bad from someone who’s been there for a long time now!

This is really great. The cons are things that I either am used to or wouldn't classify as cons based on who I am. And the pros, I'm coming from a super similar northern situation. Really looking forward to applying this fall!

UM has 4600 beds for 11,000 UGrads. It is a commuter school. A well kept secret. Only freshman get rooms. That is why there is no community after first year.

As a freshman this year, it has felt so impossible to make friends and enjoy much. I care about covid a lot, and I have encountered so many people who have not. So it has been so difficult to meet people because it's rare to find those who have the same values as me. It was so hard to make friends from that, and then there were really no opportunities to meet people otherwise since no events could happen with covid. I really tried to put myself out there too. I hope the freshman of next year have a more normal freshman year and don't have the same struggle. Also the dining hall does suck lol

Seeing how mass lectures went on there w plenty of people being maskless is very yikes.
Have you seen anything about accommodations for teachers who are disabled/high risk actually being able to teach online or students being able to keep accommodations there? A lot of universities are revoking accommodations we’ve asked for for years now and they easily made accessible during lockdowns only to now take them away because “covids gone”. Despite many outbreaks, record hospitalizations, and people who are high risk and disabled or have become high risk and disabled because of catching covid or having long haul. This was already a big point for me looking into colleges pre pandemic having issues with my 504s in highschool ever getting accommodated and I’m fairly concerned about how that’ll work once I’m healthy enough for college let alone college likely still in a pandemic setting. Seeing universities tell teachers you have to work in person or quit when asking to keep reasonable accommodations to stay as healthy and safe as they can is maddening knowing how easily they’ll do it for the able bodied majority.
I’ve always wanted to go to university of Miami to study meteorology. Specifically focusing on hurricanes. They happen to have the SUSTAIN lab which is home to a hurricane simulator that is capable of producing cat 5 hurricane conditions. I’d love to study there but it was hard to find colleges who’d accommodate to reasonable accommodations pre pandemic and it’s concerning seeing the responses now. Thanks for any response. Hope y’all are staying safe

The key is to find your group of people! so during orientation and that first year begin to find three clubs and organizations that really speak to you and make as many connections as you can. The city is an amazing place to call home for four years.
