    Nothing warms my heart more than to pop a hood or open a door and see electrical modifications have been done. Book goes out the window and "custom work" walks through the door. Tons of room to make money there.

    The only thing I get paid less than a half hour for is wiper blades. Other than that, every labor operation I perform is based on half hour increments. Our estimators and account coordinators don't have time for 2 tenths or 3 tenths nonsense. If it takes 10 minutes, I get paid a half hour. If it takes 35 minutes, I get paid an hour. Nothing wrong with flat rate as long as you know how to game the system.

    Real glad I started watching this channel and comments. I work at an independent import shop and it is damn near making me want to change careers. Parts wrong on 70% of cars (just pushed an Audi 2.0 out of shop while in service mode because they got the wrong timing chain), not the right equipment (replaced trans in Mercedes and didn’t have equipment to program it so it sat on my lift 3 days), and if I do an hour of testing and found nothing to be wrong like an intermittent issues, they only pay me 0.5. I was thinking this was how shops were but I think I’m going to just find another shop now.

    I work for BMW they can see remotely every press of the ISTA/D button press down to a millisecond. If you diagnose something to fast they won’t pay out as said it wasn’t done correctly. Strange and the mechanical times are ridiculous. Only tips I can offer in a dealer is stay on top of product knowledge.

    Here in the UK the flat rate system is done a bit differently, almost everybody I know in any trade bare in mind works on a salary or hourly basis, you have to earn a basic minimum by law. How ever lots of companies use a bonus scheme were the flat rate aspect comes into play, you will earn a monthly bonus on top of your salary depending on how many hours you sold etc etc

      How did you go about getting out of flat rate? Did you have to take a pay cut at first? I’m doing well flat rate but after 9 years, I’m already starting to feel it take a toll on me. I enjoy diagnostics and would like to just do diagnostics for a living (while getting paid hourly), but I feel like the pay wouldn’t compare to what I’m making as a flat rate tech.

    Man i wish the shop i worked at put this into consideration. We barely ever get paid for diag. We dont get paid for air filters, wipers etc. Everytime something is recommended its always why. Literally. Transmission services aren't done correctly. Can't tell the manager nothing because hes always right and everyone else is wrong.

    If you're doing 1.5 to 3.0 hour jobs all day, those 0.1 to 0.3 hr add on's could easily loose you an hours pay on the day. And forgetting the 1.2 for reclaim, evac,recharge ac on 2 jobs in the same day is like giving away almost 2 1/2 hours of your day and the pay for that as well. Come on guys, do you think your customer would work 1 hour overtime a day for free ?.... N O T ......Good points FRM.

    I would never work flat rate in a place that I wasn't writing my own estimates, the guy behind the counter can be great at what they do but they're not the one in the shop working on the car. Some jobs there is no book times, sometimes the aftermarket book is just plain wrong. I remember more than once looking up customer pay jobs at the dealer on Mitchell and finding that they had a time listed that was significantly less than what we even got under warranty. Nevermind stuff like adding labor for aftermarket parts/lift etc...

    17 year Master/Expert volvo tech here. I have since left the industry (thank god) and I am one of those techs that grossed $10k/month with minimal come backs and quality repairs. That being said, being a flat rate mechanic should have died 20 years ago and I encourage EVERY young person to stay away from the dealerships, especially corporate dealers. They are corrupt, bad benefits, and greedy. I Look to start a channel soon explaining how this is true.

      Try being at an independant where a certain job requires lets say X tool or X machine, and your co worker has is hogged up non stop. As in talking, not working, just being slow. Hourly mind you, so for real, i'm not too concered about my time when the other workers make it this way. Bill 1/2 for a job...well you can only get so many 1/2 hour jobs done in a day. 3 4 hour jobs? Easy.

      We add labor and the advisor does parts. I don't get any extra for it but making sure I'll be getting enough time is worth it. We also have a labor matrix where we add .5 up to 4 hours, add 1 for 5-8, etc to cover all the little things. At previous jobs I always thought every ro should have have a few tenths added for the random stuff that's not technically part of any specific billed job

      We get paid a basic but can make bonus on top. A basic lube tech has to sell a lot more than a Master. Every hour over daily target pays an additional £20 pounds. It’s paid Monthly and capped at £1500 bonus on top of salary. sorry not sure in dollars. We know every day how many hours sold on a bid flat screen monitor on the wall. Changes colors red, amber green. Works well but would prefer weekly pay. No company I know in the UK pays weekly anymore.

    • @terryharvey4811
      @terryharvey4811 Рік тому

      True unless for instance a skid pan is optional on a vehicle. You can't remove and then replace 4 to 8 bolts on a skid pan and do the job in the same amount of time as on one that does not have the skid pan option. Adding time in this instance is not nit picking, it's just being fair to the tech doing the extra work. Think of it as OVERTIME pay. How would you like to work 3/10 of an hour overtime and not get paid for it ????
