      Oh yeah, for sure. This game sold me on the Genesis. In fact, there were only a handful of games I enjoyed on the Genesis besides this title. There was Tyrants (Mega-lo-mania), General Chaos, Theme Park, the NHL series...I think that's it. :\

    I don't remember winning ditties sound like farts. DOS version for 16b they were awesome. Why are they always touching everything instead of preserve the original. You screw up the winning ditties and you screw up 25% of the game's satisfaction. 45:58 This wonderful music on DOS version is also changed with this crap as the Hierarchy music as well. Wow they had to ruin something... Nice vid though.

    • @guardiane
      @guardiane  3 роки тому +1

      lol that's funny, because I always found the Genesis version superior to other ports. But then again, that's probably only because I grew up with it and got accustomed to it. Same with the SNES port of "Out of this World". I love the fact they incorporated a battle theme with that port, but other people familiar with any other port of the game seem to hate it.

      @@guardiane Have you ever played the DOS version (1990) when the game first came out on a 16b CPU (that depends of how old are you I guess)! If you've played it there is no way you gonna like this more. Apparently you grew up with this one which tells me that you never played the DOS version. Few years before it came out we've played simple games on 8b Pravetz CPU like snake with apples, karateka, dangerous dave and simple games like these. When 16b came out it was a bit more advanced and we've enjoyed Bubble Bobble, North vs South, Pop Corn (the grandpa of the Arkanoid as it was created 1988) and more games but Star Control 1 was a total breakthrough for the gaming industry back then! Inspired by the 3 classic STAR WARS movies Fred and Paul created something really amazing and ACCOLADE launched it for the first time as DOS version. Honestly I was looking for this version recently but I couldn't find it anywhere! Its lost forever unless someone stored 16b CPU with Star Control 1 on an old floppy diskette which are also almost fully gone.

      @@guardiane Here friend, someone launched the DOS version and all the music is the same as it was back at 1990 when I've played it. Its a bit fast but its the same music for the winning ditties and at the end when the Hierarchy wins or the alliance wins. Listen how great it is and tell me which one you like more:

      @@raycolt8315 I'm 40 so I'm sure I was around when the DOS version existed, but you're right that I never played it (or knew there was a DOS version until now). I know what you mean about "breakthrough" though. When my friends and I first discovered this game, back in the day, we stayed up all night playing it. It took quite awhile before we got bored of it. But all we had was the Genesis version and nothing else to compare it to.
      I had a 386 back then, and the only DOS games I had were Warcraft 1 (which ran like crap on a 386 lol), Doom 2, Corridor 7, Wolfenstein 3D, Spear of Destiny, Commander Keen - oh you name it. Somehow Star Control slipped my grasp lol.
      Anyway, you can't find Star Control online anywhere? I just checked and found this:
      www.myabandonware.com/game/star-control-1w1
      That's the DOS version, no? Just get DOSbox and give it a go. Unless you're looking for the authentic physical version? I found this: www.ebay.ca/itm/202856654487?hash=item2f3b32e697:g:pToAAOSwwnNd-Q3K

      In the original game, an AI controlled Dreadnought was more judicious in its fighter deployment. See 14:23.
      The Dreadnought warps into a close-up screen with the Yehat Terminator, but its main weapon is facing away from the enemy, so it launches fighters. It then fires a single fusion blast and launches two more fighters because the enemy ship very briefly falls out of its line of sight and it has plenty of energy to spare.
      At 14:34, both ships are again in a close-up screen and the Ur-Quan once more launches fighters before trying to line up its main weapon with the enemy. After that, it's very low on energy and maintains a decent line of sight with the Terminator, so it focuses on firing fusion blasts when it has enough energy to do so.
      In SC2, an AI controlled Dreadnought will launch a whole slew of fighters, just about no matter where in the map it appears and, if it's not gaining ground on you quickly enough it will turn around and try to come at you from the other direction while its fighters continue on their original course. In SC1, the Dreadnought will instead try to pursue you, Terminator style, until it is close enough to do damage or you kill it, unless it's near the edge of the map. Consequently, it waits to launch drones until it knows they can reach you.

      Sadly I have not. I heard it's a hell of a lot more complex and detailed. I know this isn't the same but it just reminded me of another story - back in the day, a friend of mine used to play Star Trek: Birth of the Federation. It looked really cool and interesting...I go to play it - and - my god...it was way too complex for me and I could never figure it out. I automatically threw Star Control 2 in that category without giving it a chance...but that was YEARS ago. I wouldn't mind giving it a shot now.

      @@AnnatarTheMaia Okay I just watched a longplay (or parts of one) of the Amiga version, to do a comparison. The sound effects are nearly identical (maybe the Amiga's are a bit better) and the music is completely different, for sure. I wouldn't say it's THAT much better, though - just different. I guess that's because the Genesis version has nostalgia value with me? I'm not sure, I just wasn't wowed by it. But you're right that it is surprisingly better to a degree.
