Well you went to a lot of trouble to make this fine tribute to Dugga. I got to know him in the early 80s . He always had interesting things to tell you. It was never difficult having a conversation. His work spoke for itself. Boat repair and fishing . What's not to like. Over the years we got on really well and myself and a friend used to spend a lot of time at his place watching and learning. He must have thought we had a bit of an idea about sailing as he offered us the use of his sailboats. What a treat. Sometimes we had to toss a coin who would swim out to get the boat off its mooring as we had no access to a dinghy.
Big, long shallow hull and that massive lug rig would get you all over Hobson's bay in an afternoon. A couple of times we even sailed up the Yarra as far as where the Bolte bridge is now. Never a problem for Dugga. We would ring him after a sail just to say we got back ok. I think he was watching us most of the time and sometimes he would even turn up on the water in the Pearl and overhaul us in no time. The Binny Ying was the boat we were in mostly. She had a story all her own as well.
When we could, we would spend a day helping Dugga paint whatever boat was on the trailer. Try and pay back his generosity. Didnt matter. He is one of those people who is just generous by nature. Dont meet many like him in a lifetime. Glad to know him.

This takes me back to my childhood. The Beazleys use to reside and sell bait in Albert Street, just off Graham Street, Port Melbourne. As a young boy I would buy my bait from the Beazleys and walk the several kilometres to Station pier where I would spend the day fishing. I would often see Mr. Beazley at Station Pier where he would be netting schools of pilchards. Very fond memories.

Yeah he’s a gem of a man, so is his family. Had the good fortune of living next to their place in Dow street and would watch and sometimes talk with him when he was restioring an old couta boat out front. Time just seemed to stop when you spoke with dugga and the hustle and bustle of port Melbourne disappeared for awhile. Fond memories and all too brief as we moved out to Mansfield for a tree change.

This story is a true gem. Is Dugga's family still in the game? I want to visit his shop. I hope I can find it.
