How to play ‘Austro’ by Giorgio Tedde! In my opinion the most beautiful contemporary piece for recorder - and one of the most challenging. With circular breathing, elaborate finger patterns and even electronics, it can seem daunting - but that’s what I’m here for ;)

Well done everyone!

CONGRATS!!!!!
I stumbled across your channel about a week ago (thanks algorithm!). I''ve played the classical guitar for 20+ years, never even tried playing the recorder but it only took me about 3 videos to decide I needed one in my life. Got a lovely alto today, I sound like absolute garbage just playing an F major scale (my fingers are so leaky!) and that's great! Things like this are so far beyond me and it's really exciting to have such a huge subject to dive into, even if I'll be taking tiny stumbling baby steps for a long time. Anyway, I really just wanted to say thanks, and I really enjoy your videos. :)
I love the space you filmed in: the books, the beautiful piano, etc.
Yay - this is literally what I recommended on the 100k celebration video.
Me too!!! 🐰
The part at 2:20 almost gave a feeling of the effect/sound of a guitar feeding back musically rather than uncontrollably . Amazing stuff!
Craig Ogden congratulations 🎊🎉
Exactly the kind of nerdy content and aspect of recorder playing I’m unfamiliar with yet super excited about, I love to learn from Sarah! Thank you 😆
Congratulations to the three winners!! This piece have me all the feels today. It was mythical and uplifting. Probably because of the events that happened at the beginning of this month. One of my friends passed away. So my interpretation was a journey in life. She would of loved this piece.
Gosh, I'm almost speechless. This is so cool. This is a great video, these kinds of details explained by an expert gives the listning experience so much more depth.
This is awesome. I love learning about extended techniques on other instruments, and it's great to have such concrete examples to demonstrate them.
Congratulations to the winners. Nice Video, Sarah!
I am really glad that you are continuing to make these wonderful videos!
Amazing playing and description!! 😁
I've been a subscriber and watching your videos for nearly 3 years now and it's so AMAZING to see you channel explode after the exposure from TwoSet and then Davie504. Congrats and well-deserved! It is so exciting to see!! You've been so generous and patient to produce these videos that really cross over into techniques for learning all instruments. You have the advantage of being the only recorder channel around during quarantine time, and so many thousands of people with their plastic school recorders lying around the house. It's the perfect storm! This video is also awesome. What a great inside look into how a pro musician works a piece. Very inspiring.
Fantastic Sarah!!! Love how clearly you explained the score. Looks like a nightmare to Me! 🤣🤣🤣
Wow! That's fantastic!
I love Austro so much! It is so much fun to play and always a pleasure to wow the audience with circular breathing :D
Reminded me a lot the japanese Shakuhachi, the trills and fingering technique. Beautiful! Thanks for sharing!
Beautiful!
Wow this is just amazing. I had no idea that a recorder could even sound like this. After watching this video I listened to your recording of it. Just fantastic.
Awesome. Beautiful. Didn’t know the recorder could be this expressive in a modern piece.
Circular Breathing for 15.00
Recorder clogging risk - red alert
Deciphering the incredibly complex score
Extravagantly complicated finger patterns
Breath pressure and breaking continuously into specific overtones
Microphone to consider
Stamina for both physical and technical requirements
WHAT could POSSIBLY go wrong?!?
On the other hand, if you manage to nail it, it would make a sensational piece for a graduation-exam piece. No professor would dare to give you less than top marks for this, if well executed.
Sarah, this was so darn cool!! I've wanted to take up playing the recorder because of you! But I know myself....I'm lazy when it comes to practicing. But at least I can enjoy your musical stylings! Thanks for the music!
I am not a recorder player, but it's always super pleasing to hear an artist talk about their art. Thanks for the video!
I love it.
Greetings from the PHILIPPINES 🇵🇭🇵🇭
The trills you talk about are very similar to flute ornaments in Irish Traditional Music. The 4-5 trill, for example, is just like doing consecutive crans on D where you pop a finger up and put it back down, alternating 4 and 5.
From here I see that you are a true maestro. This piece looks so incredibly difficult that I don't have the courage to even attempt it. It is truly a beautiful piece when performed by an accomplished recorder player.
I loved it!!!!
I'm not into this style of music, but it's worth learning the techniques it takes to play it. It's amazing what goes into a piece like this. 😮
I also look forward to seeing more videos with Jon and Bodil. You are a wonderful family.
Far too many new tricks for this old dog, but enthralling to listen to. Thank you, Sarah.
This is nice. I know this piece from a recording by Miako Klein but the whole explanation to this song is really cool :D 🖤
Fantastic 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Very interesting, Sarah! 🤗😘
i litterally love contemporary music
It's not a tutorial, it's a one massive flex!
But on a more serious note, it's really interesting to have contemporary recorder techniques demonstrated in the context of a piece and explained.
loved it, you're so funny 😂
Thank you (from Brazil!)
On, July 27th there going to try and force ads in the middle on your Video's. Currently you can Opt-out but having 3 ads is to much.
Wonderful Sounds. I never thought this was possible
One of the great pieces on the CD! Just that first shriek at the very beginning is compelling, and I haven't quite figured out how to do it. 🙂🧐
Lol. I'm only on page 20 of Method For The Recorder, I don't think I'm ready for this one! Lol
Some of it sounds like Shakuhachi. But some of it doesn't. Amazing.
Congratulations to the winners
Where do we find them?
I absolutely love this piece on your cd. And I really do want to learn it… just… I cannot for the life of me do the circular breathing 😑😅
Maybe in a few years 🤔
A very cool subject for the video. Thank you Sarah! By the way, I like the room that you recorded this in. Have you moved house?
Hi Sarah, I know this is pretty much unrelated to the topic of this vid, but I'm planning to try and teach myself how to play the recorder this summer, but I'm not sure if I should start with the soprano or alto.... what would you recommend?
Thanks, Sarah! I’ve a long way to go!
Not exactly a recorder but thought the Suzuki andes 25f would be something cool for you to check out on your channel.
Me: ooh, this sounds interesting!
Also me: there's no way I'd ever be able to play that!
Don't miss Sarah's webinar on Saturday!!
Very different sound than I expected. Granted.... the piece I heard in my head going into this video was Korobeiniki.
I listen to you playing this piece regularly.
An outstanding piece, a extremely competent analysis, a compelling interpretation and a truly wonderful instrument... wow! 💛
Nice playing, BUT, can you play a full arrangement for Through the Fire and Flames on the recorder? 😍
Can you make a video in wich you do a summary of all suggestions for new videos?
Wao genial
Sarah, I really wanted to purchase your course, but it's sold out. Can't you sell it again?
For a plastic recorder, it might help prevent condensation to wash it with soap beforehand to get the inside slicker.
4:16 link on tutorial not created, only image
How do you breathe when playing
Love your videos! Could you make one on how to earn money as a recorder player? :)
Amazing, like Eddie van halen on recorder,
Is there anyway your album can be bought on FLAC? I never buy CDs or MP3's anymore.
I think bandcamp provides artists the option to sell their music in FLAC format...
🌬️ 🖤
Sarah, you should give TwoSet Violin recorder lessons and vice versa.
I am sure İf Would find your Channel earlier I would be a Professional Recorder player But I found it a bit late and now I am a flutist and I am so happy for that. There's no regret in my heart.I pray to God for that..Seriously.When I was little my family friends and EVERYONE told me that Recorder is a Toy and I can't play it professionaly.I was so sad when I was little. And I started to play Flute.Well I am happy but When I was a little kid I was REALLY so sad about it.
Wow! A shakuhachi recorder!
I so feel the nerdy
Hay, I can't find the place it says I'm the winner of the new recorder, just an address to send you stuff. I'm so confused
It's a pinned post in tbe comments.
@@sarahtoball2606 what does this mean?
Look in the comments section, she has a comment at the top with the winners. :)
You must find a way to amplify it put it on a guitar amplifier and turn on the over drive yes that would sound awesome it sounds so cool right now but in my head I thought if we could plug that into an overdrive it would be so cool.
I like how she plays the recorder
Omg I'm early
😀
It's a bit like playing the Shakuhachi. I like to improvise on my selfmade Shakuhachi like that.
Please heart this sarah
I will offer a humble like for you post. Please accept this touch of your thumbs up icon.
13:45 OMG! What's the deal with her elbows?
.
Let’s show the music world what recorder has to offer... time to join the musical civil/world war......
Circular breathing the WHOLE WAY !
Some parts sounded like when I tortured the ears of my neighbors with the recorder.
"I use a condenser mic" - and it a Neumann KM84! Respect!!
💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼
im so early
i think😅
I'm sure I didn't win but I can't see the pinned comment at all. The first comment at the top for me is Rory Bruce's. There seem to be no comments by Sara at all.
Oh weird! I’m check that, thanks for the heads up...
Tried to circular breathe till the end of the video.
Resumed normal breathing after 5 minutes or so. *gasp*
50th like.
This is NOT a back-handed compliment. I just genuinely did not expect to like that, but I sure did.
well second
Came from davie's. And just like him i subscribe because of the personality. Ofc the playing too but if the playing was good but the personality arent. I prob wouldnt sub
Hi Sarah, why a recorder is named a recorder? it doesnt record anything :) why not just a flute?
For a moment I thought it said how to play an ostrich. Lol
More accurate title: Why you cant play 'Austro'
Um, I didn't win... I was hoping so much... I'm very sad
Me too
I want the free trial of skillshare but my father won't give his card number, he says he does not trust it 😭😭😭😭😭
Great Video BTW. Please make more videos (with more easier peices, lol) like these in the future. Very Helpful
I am so bad at playing the recorder
im early
Fun fact: did you know that the literal translation of Recorder from spanish its "Sweet Flute"? Idk why 🤷
Apparently because it had the sweetest sound of all the renaissance flutes (got distracted while typing earlier).
@@daviydviljoen9318 It may be that
@@manubode7535 that's what I read a really long time ago...
Can u do a battle with davie504
first
I wanna giveaway. But i from Indonesia :')
Are you playing the piano
How many people in the world can actually play this? At least a few dozen....
I'm back to my Yamaha USD-5.
Wow! Wow! Wow! You are amazing. Just discovered your channel. 1Love o
uP uP uP
Nice - but this is all too advanced for me. Maybe in a few years.
Would u please...join the war between those strings instrument players...the more the merrier🤣
I am not a fan of the contemporary stuff it just looks like she is making love to her recorder
