I had a rogue on my old Vista that all but crippled the computer (no Task Manager, web browsers, regedit, only a few IM programs) and I tried to install Ubuntu so I could access the files for the rogue and delete them. Well the installation for Ubuntu went funky somehow (can't remember the specifics now) and things got wonky enough that Windows basically said "Hold up you're going to need to do a system restore here". I did that, and afterwards booted up and suddenly I had Task Manager again. I think the rogue still tried to run, but I shut it down and deleted all of its files. So I don't know, it might be worth looking into if rogues and ransomware are so specialized for Windows that booting up with a Linux OS cripples them.
Well yeah. The malware can't do a whole lot if Windows isn't running. But hell, one time I managed to disable one of those things by opening regedit and deleting crap- which was kinda impressive, 'cos I was about 12 at the time :P

But then again, many experienced software engineers will tell you that if something should be impossible, that's probably what's happening. :P
