    Well done. I've got one of the so-called "non-legal" C30 AWD with the proper ECU swaps. As a Canadian, the swap is fully disclosed to my insurance as well as the new value in order to cover repairs adequately in case of an accident. The MTO does not care about vin match. As my donor V50 did not have stability control... I don't need the "race mode"... I'm always in race mode ;) Best winter mod for a Canuck!

    I plan in the future to do a AWD C30, and where I live (Sweden) when checking the regulations it is simply explained as if you registered the changes/modifications and tell the insurance about the changes to revalue the car you should have no problem with the cops. By registering the modifications is usually done on an MOT shop or in a few places an engine tuner that has qualified for that 👍

    I have a stupid idea and I’m curious what it would take to make it work.
    I’d like to make an XC30 V8, thinking 10”

    • @MyNameIdeasWereTaken
      @MyNameIdeasWereTaken  Рік тому +1

      The Yamaha V8 was successfully fitted into an S40, so it is possible.
      Your desired ground clearance will be a huge challenge. I have seen some successful 2" lifts from stock ride height, but you start dealing with more challenges than you would from lowering a car. To achieve your desired ride height would require a lot of custom parts and probably custom subframes as well. Take a look at some of the off road Mazda 3 builds, as these are the same chassis.
      But I do think the concept would be awesome! I had plans to build a lifted AWD C30 for a while, but that dream transitioned into my Project V50 series and the car took a different route.
      Truth be told, you may be better off figuring out a body swap on a V8 XC90, as that already has the engine, drivetrain, and could easily get to the ride height that you want.

    I have a suggestion to achieve an accurate fuel reading. Empty the gas tank, turn on the car, and bend the needle on the fuel gauge to read empty. Alternatively, fill the tank up, turn the car on, and bend the needle to fuel. This has worked for me in the past.

    • @MyNameIdeasWereTaken
      @MyNameIdeasWereTaken  4 роки тому

      That would not work. The gauge still reads full at full and empty at empty. The problem is the ECU does not understand the AWD saddle tank. The left side of the tank continues to fill the right side of the tank, the right side of the tank has the level sensor and feeds to the fuel rail. So for the first 2/3rd of a tank, the right side of the tank remains full and the fuel gauge registers a full tank. Once the left side of the tank is empty, the fuel gauge will fall with the depletion of the remaining gas in the right side of the tank. So for the last 1/3 of a tank, the gauge completes the sweep as normal. You just have to know that once the needle moves off full, you're using the last 1/3 of gas.

    I bought a c30 with rod knock and a friend is parting out an awd s40 that is known good. Debating doing this swap myself. You kind of made it sound first really cool, then like it wasnt worth it, then like you loved it. which one is it? The car would be kept mostly stock for now, but may see some massive power bumps down the road if we decide to keep it.

    • @MyNameIdeasWereTaken
      @MyNameIdeasWereTaken  4 роки тому

      It's cool in the sense that it's not too complicated to build a fairly unique AWD hatchback and it definitely makes the C30 more enjoyable from a driving perspective. So if you're a Volvo fan, it's well worth it.
      But expect the AWD system to feel very dated compared to newer cars. An AWD C30 can be made to compete with a stock WRX, stock Focus RS, stock Golf R, etc. But if you're in the market for an AWD performance oriented vehicle, an AWD swapped C30 would not be my suggestion.
      The uniqueness factor is what makes me love this car. But if I were to choose a car to take in the mountains or on the track right now, I would choose my WRX over the C30 every time.

    • @Ericbuyslunch
      @Ericbuyslunch 4 роки тому

      @@MyNameIdeasWereTaken it'd be for fun, not to be competitive. I love my s60r, but have driven a lot of other volvos i dont like. he is an enthusiast. He's probably owned over 50 volvos. So between us it'll certainly be enjoyed.
      I just realized though. The manual swap would probably be the worst part, so he is just gonna pull off all the AWD stuff and we'll wait for the right chassis to show up so we can do it. probably just fix the one we have now up and sell it to find a good manual one.
      The real reason we would do it is because we can do it for next to nothing, and have a cool unique car we can have fun with and eventually sell.
      all in all it sounds like its a fun car, and that's all we'd want. We have other cars to go fast and be competitive in.

    • @MyNameIdeasWereTaken
      @MyNameIdeasWereTaken  4 роки тому +2

      @@Ericbuyslunch That's pretty much why I did this project, just for fun because I had all the parts and it didn't cost me much. I had my C30 shell and performance parts, the V50 drivetrain, and another C30's engine. Plus I had the time, so I brought all of them together into a fun little project.

    • @MyNameIdeasWereTaken

      Stronger, yes: with custom upgraded axles and driveshaft. Some people have also made custom haldex controllers to lock in something closer to 50/50 power distribution.

    • @MyNameIdeasWereTaken
      @MyNameIdeasWereTaken  Рік тому

      I use my C30 for rally type events quite frequently. While the Volvo AWD system is an improvement over FWD for offroad grip, it still drives similar to a FWD car and requires forcing the car to rotate (by handbrake or Scandi-flicking) for sharp turns. I've found my WRX has a far superior drivetrain for anything offroad and it's a lot easier to rotate and AWD drift.

    What do you have to do to make the fwd downpipe to fit an awd car? Ive heard the fwd dp is 3 inches shorter hence why you welded on a flange. What other modifications do you need to do to fit it around the transfer case?

    • @MyNameIdeasWereTaken
      @MyNameIdeasWereTaken  3 роки тому +2

      The overall length is no different. On AWD, you need additional clearance to get around the transfer case. I fitted a longer flex pipe at a slight angle (worthwhile since the flexpipe on cheap FWD downpipes is usually a weak point that breaks prematurely due to being too short and overstressed) and then just added the spacer to the flange.

    so a few things... for the cost and time spent on this, i think makes much more sense to buy a C30 (or whatever flavor volvo) with AWD already installed by volvo and then either reprogram the DEM/CEM system to send power to the rear more regularly or even full time.. yes you will undoubtedly be impacting reliability however nothing that regular maintenance wont overcome as you should be flushing haldex fluid more often than most people ever do (most never do sad to say). if your racing as well then well, reliability isnt a huge concern so much as it is predictability in how long it will last, im sure with soft modified haldex being forced to run more regularly it will compete he race but may need its fluid changed more regularly as well as being inspected to ensure no leaks or failures from extra stress, in fact more worried about cooling and stress on the chassis from hard cornering constantly around a race course before i worry about WD system fluid needing changing or leaking. if what doing is adding AWD for traction in poor weather or road conditions then i wouldn't worry too much about soft modding it or doing a very basic limited soft mod and do yearly or bi-yearly checks of AWD unit. if looking to rally it...well, as mentioned in video, wrong car for it though im sure you could get way with it and may strand out and keep you with the others on a rally course, just no ideal vehical, and like racing if its a rally car then just do regular fluid changes and inspections to make sure all is well..
    as for recommending a Golf-R or a Focus RS. no.. first Golf-R is a nice car and all but its too soulless and very very german in how it acts... also very useless in my experience for situations where you need AWD cuts power way to much even with disabled TC/stability control the nannies step in.. i rented one for a trip and it was snowing out and no you will not get he ass out very easily on a golf-R you can but it fights you every step of the way and i even managed to get stuck but i used to run those all season tires on a FWD volvo and while wheels broke ree very easily in snow it never got stuck, the golf got confused by a slight hill and a parking space (trying to leave it). as for the Focus-RS if reliability is a worry thn why bother with an RS/ those transmittions are junk and cooling is a problem when hammering on it and i have a friend that works at ford and he told me when i was considering one to just not get one and instead go with a C30 T5 R-Design with AWD they had at the time for like $5,000 w/out his discount he been saving up he was going to give me only 120K miles and in great condition, almost showroom level and he knows much more reliable than fords and that every RS he has sold comes back for constant fixes unless selling it to someone just collects the cars and is rich kids wants it for the garage showroom but it always comes back.. i am still to this day kicking myself for not doing it, and instead waffling just long enough for i to get sold..the very next fk ing day :( . oh well, im still good, got my 270,000 miles 2011 XC70 i can just on keeping on with, i guess...

      You do understand that the C30 was never offered with AWD, correct? The only way to have an AWD C30 is to build one yourself. Reliability is of no concern, as it is utilizing all stock parts and all well tested modifications.

      It's most noticeable on track or in the mountains. Around town, the haldex just runs it as a FWD car.
      I would say it's very reliable too. It's not like this is something new and an untested system. It's the same AWD setup that Volvo has been running since 2005 in their S40s and V50s. Just be sure to stay up to date with fluid changes.
