When Phil was changing his set up with the chunky barrels, in the premier league while still with Unicorn, it took a few weeks to get it right, I remember and still smile about it to this day when Manley beat him and Peter took the board down to sign effin' quality 😂
Peter Manley is actually a really nice guy despite a few spats with other players here and there. Does a huge amount for the game as chairman of the Players’ Union.
I remember that game… Manley beat him 8-3 in the Premier League on the Thursday in February 2008 and I played him a couple of days later in Stoke on Trent in a meet up at the Roebuck Inn and I remember looking at his new chunky darts, they were the Unicorn Sigma Pro dart, thinking they just weren’t right for him and I sat with him and chatted for probably a good couple of hours and conversation turned to his darts. Being someone who had knowledge of Unicorn’s range at the time, I was aware of a new dart Unicorn had called the Golden Hero range which was player signature darts with a Phil Taylor grip and suggested he tried the John Lowe version and if he liked them, get Unicorn to make a 26gram version (they originally were made in 20, 22 and 24 grams) in a slightly longer dart. His wife at the time had a set, he tried them, loved them and Unicorn made a 26gram version that were called the Phase 5 and he won 3 world championships with them.
Also convicted in May 2001 of 2 counts of indecent assault against 2 women he took back to his caravan in Fife after an exhibition match in 1999. With the 1999 allegations still kept secret until his trial, he was named in the 2001 New Year’s Honours list that he was due to receive an MBE for services to sport, but in March of 2001, the allegations had become public knowledge due to the trial taking place & him being found guilty. His MBE award was annulled before he received it. He was sentenced in May 2001 to pay a fine of £2,000. There’s no way the sentence would be that lenient today. They were both young (late teens) and he was 39. Both girls were drunk, and he tried to take advantage of them. More detail in the below archived BBC article. news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/1306433.stm He was a very gifted player, but his character was also just plain horrible as well. Remember the 2012 World Semi Final, when Barney was 5-1 down in sets, then Barney won the next 3 sets to get to 5-4 behind before Taylor eventually crossed the line 6-4. Taylor gave an over the top celebration & when Barney shook his hand & then went in for a hug, Taylor just completely lost it, shoving Barney away & shouting at him. The bouncers at the bottom of the steps off the stage to the players area had to get Taylor out of the way, while Barney was left confused at congratulating Taylor for winning, only for him to kick off at him. As fans, Sky Sports, and other media were all talking about what a twat he’d been & how disgraceful his behaviour was, he appeared via a video call from his home suddenly saying how sorry he was & how embarrassed he was, and that he would “retire tomorrow” if people wanted him to.🤦♂️ Even if people *had* called for him to retire, would he have honoured it? Not a chance!!
I think this in just the pattern you can see in many "(one of the) best of the sport" athletes. I immediatly think of Michael Schumacher, who had many controversies, as well as Ronny O'Sullivan and all of his antics. I guess you don't get good in a single thing without being a bit weird.
Ronnie O’Sullivan is just a bit lost in his own head at times aha I don’t think he’s ever intentionally played mind games with anyone the way Phil Taylor used to
Trying to get an advantage over your opponent is nothing wrong, even morally. You're there to win, not to be a nice guy and make friends. If your opponent is put off by it then they need to work on themselves first to be the bigger person and become unphased by such mindgames. In football players dive, lie on the ground making faces as if they are dying on the spot to get a foul called, only to run around again 2 minutes later. Yet nobody is annoyed at that or thinks it's morally wrong?
@@alexanderjames6328it's not that. MVG plays in a totally different era. In Taylor's time, he was the only one who could hit 100+ averages consistently. Now you get guys outside the top twenty in the world who can comfortably hit ton plus averages. The level of competition MVG is up against is so much tougher than what Taylor felt.

I dont care what anyone says, I will always like Phil Taylor!
As a player ? Sure
As a human - no
MVG as a human is an arrogant type as well, but I guess you cannot see that.
MVG isn’t arrogant, he is just normally confident in his own game
So you like sexual predators? Nice choice!😂

Phil is disturbing. Like a 60 year old baby. Truly a strange bloke. Great darts player but a total narcissist and weirdo.

taylor always got the board signed, it wasnt an end of his career thing like stated
Never used to want to sign it when he lost though. Biggest sore loser ever.
He did it a lot more towards his latter career, I believe that’s what was meant
Mardle loved having an opportunity to put Phil down as a pundit it’s kinda amusing lol

There is no denying that Phil is a bit of a weird bloke... but, then, maybe you've got to be a bit weird to win 16 world championships.

No, just media BS. Even so, you know how some folks believe anything the media spews out.

Nothing will make me ever dislike Mr Taylor... other players have done it... mentioning no names.
Didn't he sexually abuse two women in his caravan
Not even his sexual assault case??
Thankfully, Micheal sent Phil packing....
Their head2head would suggest otherwise. MVG will never achieve what Mr Taylor has, he's just too damned arrogant and inconsistent.
