Bill's dad has such metered and honest takes. It's really refreshing to hear someone discussing sports honestly and not yelling or saying stupid stuff to get attention
I need a pod based solely on how the last two decades have looked for the Celtics vs Lakers. I think it's such an interesting dynamic to see how the Celtics have operated vs the Lakers. Two different cultures, different types of successes, but VERY different last 10 years and into the future.
The Lakers had the chance to trade their young core away for the 2nd greatest player of all time and 1 ring. If the Celtics were able to acquire LeBron for some of their young core they probably would have done it too. Sometimes you dodge those bullets. Look how the Bucks traded away their core for Dame Lillard.
@@Sam................Oh and LeBron is not the second greatest player of all-time. Take almost anyone in the top 20 and give them the amount of help he had from 2011-2020 and they probably also have 3-4 rings.

Tho ill strongly agree boomers and gen x had it far more rough The 2003 red sox, and 2019 bruins did rip our hearts out in the same way that our parents suffered; so we know it a bit. (2013 bruins, 2010 Celtics, and 2008 red sox don't count because they were on the heels of recent titles). But for sure, us boston sports fans are crazy spoiled
that White block was absolutely absurd. a point guard blocking the opposing center's dunk at the peak of his jump. wade might be the only other guy at that height who could do that in history
I’ve always heard the voice of Bill’s dad, but never seen him. I did not expect that much hair or a 70s stache! Put on a headband and he’s Vitas Gerulaitis’ doubles partner.
Whenever bill’s dad passes on (which hopefully won’t be for a long time!!), he will always be able to go back to these conversations and really cherish them. I’m both happy for him and jealous 😔
Bill one of the luckiest sports fans on the planet. Gets to watch his team win another banner with his dad, both life long Celtics fans, and then they get to record themselves discussing it. Has to be one of the coolest memories you can actually physically look back on when remembering your relationship.
One of my first thoughts when I saw that Boston won was “I wonder what Bill Simmons has to say about it?” I discovered Bill this past year and he posts some interesting podcast clips to UA-cam. If I could have one suggestion for him, it would be to revisit the redraftables from 2020 and do every class that’s at least seven years old.
The Celtics entire defensive game plan was based on Jaylen Brown being able to guard Luka 1v1. Jaylen guarding Luka 1v1 is why the Mavs scored less than 100pts in 4 out of 5 games. That plus his efficiency when scoring is why he won FMVP over Tatum.
That's dramatically oversimplifying and misunderstanding what they did. First thing is no one guards one-on-one anymore. The help defenders will load up in the gaps specifically so Brown (or whoever) is *NOT* on an island. (Although Luka started running 1-4 flat so Boston couldn't load up.) Second is Dallas would make Brown switch off Luka when they wanted to iso. The game plan was really more about Tatum being able to hold up against their centers on the boards so they could switch pick and rolls; Al being able to switch onto Luka (he shot 28 times vs Al -- more than anyone else -- and only made 9 including 1/13 on threes); and the help defenders ability to play in the gaps and still recover to shooters to take away corner threes But Jaylen having both the ability to navigate screens _and_ the size to physically hold up so Luka couldn't wear down Jrue or White was massive But what you are describing just didn't happen because Luka didn't even go after Brown 1v1. He would get a switch into Pritchard, Hauser, Porzingis, Tillman or White.
@michaelahurt you realize Luka calling for a ton of switches also played into the Celtics favor right, it slowed down the offense, JB being able to stick with him 1v1 is what allowed the Celtics to not give up the corner 3 which the Mavs role players live off of. Jaylen Brown's job on defense was a far tougher match-up than Tatum's, heck Luka NEVER called for a switch when Tatum was on him and he got to a bucket more times than not when JT was his primary defender.
@@King_Mac80 Luka does that every game to every opponent but yes. But they didn't give up the corner threes when it was Pritchard or Hauser or White either so how is that specific to Brown? JB's job was definitely tougher, just not more important. Terrance Mann and Lu Dort were both able to stick with Luka as much as JB but their teams gave up the lobs and threes because they were in a drop. That's the key The very fact that Tatum and Horford _can_ switch into Luka so you don't need to play in a drop is what allowed Boston to take away the lobs and by proxy the corner threes (which are created by the low man needing to tag the roller). Yeah Luka was definitely more comfortable attacking Tatum than Brown, but him attacking Tatum is still better than the alternative and that was the difference. It was that they made Luka into a 1v1 player vs everyone _except_ Brown, who he really only attacked in PnR when he wanted to attack the big. That's why I say Brown sucking up all the minutes and just having the size to guard Luka relatively well was the most important part of his role because Luka only took 22 shots against him out of 125 even though Brown guarded him 43% of the time. But obviously you're not going to put your worst Luka defender on Luka. Unless you're Chris Finch.
@@michaelahurtBrown was a total maniac on defense in Games 1 and 2. when was tatum dominant on that end? enabling something doesn't make you better than actually doing something. tatum was awesome on the board, but brown was getting high leverage blocks and steals that kept momentum in their favor. his overall defensive performance, difficulty of matchup, and better efficiency, aggression, etc on offense means he clearly deserved MVP. he was the most important 2-way guy on a team of 2-way guys
@@slightexag It kind of does. Basketball is a tactical sport. It's dictated by matchups and what you can or can't take away. Enabling something -- or more importantly taking something away -- is like 90% of defense. What doesn't happen is often much more important than what does. Defense is about taking away the best shots _then_ defending what is left as well as you can. That's why so many people suck at evaluating defense. They can't see what didn't happen. They can see Luka hit a 35% three on Gobert but don't notice the 10 times a player turned down a 65% layup because they saw Rudy. They don't notice that the reason Luka took a step back instead of driving is because Jrue Holiday was in his driving gap. LA and OKC both have guys who defended Luka really well and had a plethora of guys to throw at him. But they couldn't switch their centers onto him and couldn't have their four guard Dallas fives and that's why they couldn't slow down Dallas. I don't care who won MVP. Brown was awesome. That's the best I've seen him play. He hasn't played defense like that in years
Bucks?? They’ve been trash all year and even worse since doc got there. All of that on top of the fact that they have been together one year and didn’t even have a training camp together. Why would that be the team you wanted to see??

Congratulations for the title. I really appreciate the motorcycle story in your book, and one of your column about the right time to retire about Tim Duncan. Best regards.
Congrats Boston fans! I do find this morning's Tatum conversations to be odd - nobody ever questioned if the guy is a good player when his team is up by 20. If that game was close in the 4th his stats would be significantly diminished and JB would have had to shoulder most of the important shots.
@@nocturne311 Tatum is just really good any time. That said, JB tends to be their closer...he just takes and hits better shots within the offense whereas Tatum tends to just pound the ball and take a bad % shot.
At long last, Bill's time has finally come. Congrats. Now instead of Bird or the 08 team, we'll forever hear references and comparisons related to the '24 Celtics instead. Torch has been passed 🙃
Brown getting the FMVP was way bigger than the points/rebounds/assists box score. Brown was the vocal leader, sending all the right messages, and set the tone defensively. What he did guarding Luka all game (all series for that matter) was a way bigger part of him winning than what shows up in the box score. Box scores can be deceptive.

thanks for sharing guys...your memory/details are incredible...I've be a Celtics fan since Bird and thankful to have seen him play live. I've watched Brown and Pritchard since HS and so happy for them and this great team.
As a true laker fan. Bill has some of the best real basketball insight. I listen every week for his pods. I love when he what the old man on. Wish I could still talk about basketball with my pops the way he does with his.
So happy for you Bill. For all of us.
Love how locked in he was regarding game stats, team history, and in-game moments. So dope to see!
Congratulations boys on yet another Boston pro sports championship. Truly a city of champions
Yuck

Bill's dad has such metered and honest takes. It's really refreshing to hear someone discussing sports honestly and not yelling or saying stupid stuff to get attention
It's the first Celtics title for most of the younger fans (myself included) this is pretty damn special
Congratulations and welcome to the club, my friend. ☘️💚
Horford’s win is one of my favorite veteran titles in recent history. Jeff Green and Deandre are number one because it was my team
@@Sam................No way Boston would have traded guys like Tatum and Brown for LeBron. Lol.
@@Sam................Oh and LeBron is not the second greatest player of all-time. Take almost anyone in the top 20 and give them the amount of help he had from 2011-2020 and they probably also have 3-4 rings.
@@nocturne311 you wear your opinion on your sleeve. The general consensus and all the ESPN polls and rankings have MJ as 1 and LBJ as 2 sorry it's what the world thinks and not what you do
@@nocturne311 and of course Boston wouldn't want anything to do with LeBron. But if the Lakers had Tatum and Brown they probably would have traded one of them away for him.
So cool you got to watch this with your Dad. Go Celtics!!
Congratulations on Banner # 18
These two have an amazing relationship. Good stuff.
I dont know why anyone ever Doubted Mazulla.
If you watch the games nightly, one of the first things you notice about him is he makes great Game to Game adjustments - not talking playoffs, this started in year 1 for him- He has improved himself so much and you could literally see it happening Game to Game.
Always had faith in this guy.
So cool.
One of my favorite things is your awesome connection. So pure.
Woke up like a kid on Christmas and my presents are shows and vids
STOP SAYING ISSUES WITH GAME 4!!! BOSTON TOTALLY TANKED GAME 4 SO THAT THEY COULD WIN THE CHAMPIONSHIP IN FRONT OF THEIR FANS. EXACTLY 16 YEARS SINCE THEIR LAST TITLE.
Wait a second,
Why doesn't he have a podcast? That blows my mind!!
Every time I see Dad's on the pod watch.
dr. bill and this family had this l.a.-native pulling for boston. this is dope.
The best part is bill and his dad walking around Boston like zombies, all nervous, despite being up 3-1. Only gen x and boomer Boston fans will understand what being a Boston fan was like before this century. Millenials and gen z have been spoiled.
I'll push back on mellenials slightly. Tho ill strongly agree boomers and gen x had it far more rough
The 2003 red sox, and 2019 bruins did rip our hearts out in the same way that our parents suffered; so we know it a bit. (2013 bruins, 2010 Celtics, and 2008 red sox don't count because they were on the heels of recent titles). But for sure, us boston sports fans are crazy spoiled
This is the most dominant team you felt nervous about the whole time, more relieved than anything else
I was rooting for the Mavs, but I gotta say I'm really happy that Bill gets to celebrate with his dad. Congrats!
that White block was absolutely absurd. a point guard blocking the opposing center's dunk at the peak of his jump. wade might be the only other guy at that height who could do that in history
David Thompson. Pretty much though.
@@nocturne311 fair enough. only a select few with the timing and bounce
Love your work Bill, and how csn you say no to not giving your dad his own podcast!
So happy we never traded the J's just needed time
He was a lawyer for many years, is in his 70s/80s, and his son is worth over 100 million dollars, why would he need a day job??
☘️☘️☘️☘️
Enjoyed this so much i came back, hehe
Let's go get #19! Mike Gorman went out a champ!!!
I’ve always heard the voice of Bill’s dad, but never seen him. I did not expect that much hair or a 70s stache! Put on a headband and he’s Vitas Gerulaitis’ doubles partner.
Milwaukee titles count for Lakers, Brooklyn counts for Dodgers, Clippers are still Clippers.
Whenever bill’s dad passes on (which hopefully won’t be for a long time!!), he will always be able to go back to these conversations and really cherish them. I’m both happy for him and jealous 😔
the silver lining to losing game 4 was that we got the game 5 pod with dad. love hearing your perspectives from inside the garden.
I have a Knicks Porzingas tshirt. I'm glad I could wear it again with pride.
Love that guy
You must be the last NY tingis pingis fan out there lol
Bill one of the luckiest sports fans on the planet. Gets to watch his team win another banner with his dad, both life long Celtics fans, and then they get to record themselves discussing it. Has to be one of the coolest memories you can actually physically look back on when remembering your relationship.
If the man wants to Pod, let’m Pod! Love listening to Poppa Simmons. Let’s go ☘️
Red sox waited 86 years bruins waited 41 years patriots waited 33 years...celtics waited 16
Celtics waited 22 years from 1986 to 2008 and then another 16 from 2008 to 2024. The Red Sox and Patriots won multiple titles in the 2000s and 2010s.
Couldn’t wait to listen to this after last night
Give those Minnesota championships to the Twolves!
Also, tired of seeing Gary Payton on Thunder franchise pages 😆
One of my first thoughts when I saw that Boston won was “I wonder what Bill Simmons has to say about it?”
I discovered Bill this past year and he posts some interesting podcast clips to UA-cam.
(Although Luka started running 1-4 flat so Boston couldn't load up.)
Second is Dallas would make Brown switch off Luka when they wanted to iso.
The game plan was really more about Tatum being able to hold up against their centers on the boards so they could switch pick and rolls; Al being able to switch onto Luka (he shot 28 times vs Al -- more than anyone else -- and only made 9 including 1/13 on threes); and the help defenders ability to play in the gaps and still recover to shooters to take away corner threes
But Jaylen having both the ability to navigate screens _and_ the size to physically hold up so Luka couldn't wear down Jrue or White was massive
But what you are describing just didn't happen because Luka didn't even go after Brown 1v1.
That's the key
The very fact that Tatum and Horford _can_ switch into Luka so you don't need to play in a drop is what allowed Boston to take away the lobs and by proxy the corner threes (which are created by the low man needing to tag the roller).
He hasn't played defense like that in years
Bill Finally won his chip... they are too OP for everyone... I wanted to see Boston and full force Bucks..
Finally? He's seen them win 7.
Bucks?? They’ve been trash all year and even worse since doc got there. All of that on top of the fact that they have been together one year and didn’t even have a training camp together. Why would that be the team you wanted to see??
I’d like to introduce the Celtics Paradox: When the Celtics are on the verge of a championship, the last person I want to hear from is Bill Simmons. When the Celtics win a championship, there’s no one I’m happier for than Dr & Bill Simmons. Congrats on a great year! 🎉
Congratulations gentlemen!
Great to see you and your Dad get the win. Die hard Knick fan but was pulling for you last night, it was time for Tatum and Brown.
Bill is summoning the ghost of Paul Pierce right now.
What does that mean?
Question 🙋♂️ did the Celtics lose game 4, so they could celebrate their championship in Boston?! It feels like a gentleman thing to do.
We’ve waited 16 years for this! ☘️
I'm rehabing my shoulder and elbow. I reinjured my self celebrating that Pritchard heaven. Had to ice down second half.
That's a dad that loves his son. I didn't have one quite like that but I am one.
Congratulations for the title. I really appreciate the motorcycle story in your book, and one of your column about the right time to retire about Tim Duncan.
Best regards.
Congrats To Mr. Simmons And MRr. Simmons
Congrats Boston fans! I do find this morning's Tatum conversations to be odd - nobody ever questioned if the guy is a good player when his team is up by 20. If that game was close in the 4th his stats would be significantly diminished and JB would have had to shoulder most of the important shots.
Tatum was actually pretty good in the clutch this year but you would have to watch almost every Celtics game to really notice that.
Its really weird i too felt the mavs have a chance the whole time but they didnt even get it down past 18, I get sweating it at 9 but not above 18. And on top of that dallas wasnt really humming either
Let’s gooooooooooo Celtics!!!! ☘️
Cool to see where Bill got his voice, just like his dad 😊
Dude looks like Albert Einstein
He really does lol
Let’s Go Celtics !!!
Bill is the body language guru and his dad is the crowd guru
