  • Tim Taylor catches up with graphic designer, architect and heritage consultant, Raysan Al-Kubaisi. Raysan shares his Time Team memories, his thoughts on the evolution of virtual reconstruction and the role of the heritage sector in New Zealand - where he now lives with fellow Time Team regular, Brigid Gallagher, and their family.
We're thrilled that Raysan and Brigid will be lending their expertise to the new digs remotely from their New Zealand base. Tim and Raysan discuss some of the details of how this might happen...

Wow what a debt we owe this guy. Over a decade of those gorgeous graphics. Thank you so much for your contribution!

From a stranger in the US, the words about Victor were spot on. I think his artwork is exceptional the way his figures seemed alive and oddly familiar. I'm sure he is somewhere re-drawing a whole scene from some tiny new evidence to make sure it is as accurate as could be.

That chat with Raysan (and the occasional disembodied voice of Brig') was lovely.
As an ex-Kiwi (very 'ex'), a Pakeha, growing up in Australia and watching Time Team, I loved Raysan's contributions, in part because I'd worked in traditional animation in Australia and his digital efforts were like magic.
I'm so chuffed to hear his joy about working with Victor Ambrus. I had collected a number of Victor's books well before discovering TT, and to watch TT one day, to watch 'this fellow' drawing, having that light bulb moment, racing to the bookshelves, and then scouring the end credits was a 'connecting moment' [my personal philosophy, so-called, is that everything is connected somehow, somewhere and somewhen - discovering Victor on TT was an instructive delight].
For my sins, I was involved in Medieval-Renaissance re-enactment for 20-odd years, with many folk who were primarily there for the camaraderie but, especially satisfying for me, with people who were (almost) professionally engaged in reconstruction, in re-making: armour, textiles, furniture, food... drink. As much as I enjoyed that immersion, I enjoyed showers, flush toilets & antibiotics more.
But what we could never engage with, especially out here in the Antipodes, was the structures, the castles, the villas, the homes. Raysan, Neil and Victor provided that missing link.
I'm so glad to hear that everyone in Aotearoa is well and thriving.
Bring on the new Time Team!
    Cheers muchly, Tim!
    - Nigel.

Great to see and hear Raysan again. NZ would be a great place for a future Time Team remote dig. "Bay of Plenty Vanished Settlement" has a TT title ring to it. Of course Brigid would have to be in charge of the dig.

Textures? Hard to get right! Check out Andrew Price in Australia using Blender 3D!
This was a wonderful session … great chemistry!
Original Time Team lost out by never giving Raysan a speaking role!
Mighty good choice to include Raysan in TT2!

Good idea, Time Team NZ, with Bridget heading the show. They could work the native and colonial sights. Produced for monthly release. Maybe even more Time Team shows from Canada, India, Austrailia, the Carribean islands and Latin America. Sort of a Time Team world series. With local presenters.

You would need to cover all of the pre-Maori history as well. Namely the original aboriginal inhabitants, the sea people and the Maoriori, all of who were here before the Maori ever came here to New Zealand.

@@cargilekm There is just to much suppressed history in this country especially with one lot claiming indigenous rights when they have no claim to this country. They and the so-called missionaries tried to erase a lot of the evidence of the original inhabitants and anyone who was here before them, but they have failed..

Susana Lipscombe would be a GREAT presenter .... love her mind ... and her looks ... but her mind most of all ... something sexy about a smart women tbh ;)

I would like to direct Tim towards the Unreal engine, this game engine is FREE to use and could easily be used to make these 3D worlds for everyone to walk around in. I do think the team behind that engine would be happy to help out as well for a project like this if asked (I went ahead and made a tweet towards them including time team's twitter account).
If we can get them on board then it may become a lot easier and faster to make a solid platform for people to load these worlds and walk trough them without causing crashes or other issues. Another thing I hope is that they will ask some of their staff to join in and help out making the actual things that need to be made. May it be a specific object, entire building or landscape.
(I am a gamer myself, I make modifications for games and I have been working in the background for many titles as volunteer)

funny how many of the time team crew are now in new zealand ... this is what the 3rd or fourth one ... and of course brigide as well ... you could almsot do a faithful time team episode in New Zealand perhaps find something that links england and new zealand that you can do remote digs on both places ... sort of like the big royal dig but live to tape then edited together .... in context of course ... and perhaps if you do find some thing you can link if the england side becomes scheduled then the new zealand side has something to work with to get colonial stuff saved as well ... it aint much BUT it IS a start

Where's the proof to back up your claim? It's quite a statement to make without so much as a name of the Maori's supposed predecessors.

ACTUALLY IT IS THE TRUTH, WE DINT KNOW WHO WAS THE NEOLITHIC PEOPLE IN NEW ZEALAND BEFORE THE MAORI CAME. THE MAORI ARE AUSTRONESIAN RELATED TO THE FILIPINOS, INDONESIANS AND NATIVE MALAYSIAN. THEY CAME TO NEW ZEALAND FROM THE PACIFIC ISLANDS AROUND 2000 YEARS AGO. BEFORE THAT IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THE ORIGINAL PEOPLE THAT LIVE THERE LOOK MORE LIKE THE AUSTRALIAN ABORIGINES.@@Yvolve
