Make your house good and strong-- never know what mother nature will throw your way. Back in 1944 there was a hurricane where my mother's dad had built a summer house. When the hurricane came through many houses were lost. My grandfather's house did not get destroyed. But it was taken by the water from ocean front to bay front. No problem they took it back to it's old foundation, where it survived for another 30 years and as a child in the 50/60s, it was one of my favorite places to go.

Having rocky soil is an asset. When my husband built our cabin he did concrete footers. the Base of the footers are twice as wide as the footers so that the weight of the house would not push the footers down into the sandy soil. our cabin is built off the ground like yours....we were "off grid" for 15 yrs but now have electricity....enjoying watching your progress. Ya'll hang in there, it will be worth it!.... Blessings!

Bless your sweet heart, giving praise and honor to our Heavenly Father, He will continue to bless you!!❤ Seeing you roughing it there at your campsite as you're building your future home reminds me of my favorite verse in the Bible. Jeremiah 29:11 "For I know the plans I have for you", declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." That verse is such a comfort to me, and I hope so for you too!❤

Jason, you've done a great job with the additional bracing. Might be a good idea, especially if you are planning on closing it in. Again GREAT JOB!!!

Hello Jason, I would recommend a few concrete tubes around the foundation. But you don't need to get them all in right away. The railroad ties will keep it square and supported for now. I would start with some concrete tubes in the center before you get the flooring on. Keep up the great work, we will support you with whatever you decide to do. We are here to help not dictate.

Especially in the middle two or three concrete supports and four by fours or what ever will give you (and us) a lot of peace of mind. P.s. Don’t you have a cordless impact wrench? My grandfather used railroad ties when he built his poll barn that was almost 30 years ago and only a few have rotted out. If you keep the water away from the them they should last awhile. But when they do go bad just replace them with treated 6x6 or use cinder blocks. Can’t wait to see it done!

Hun if you don mind me making a suggestion before you put your decking on put some hardware wire or mineral board on the underneath of the joists and insulate and put the decking on it will make it so much easier on you to insulate the floor. As far as the the bracing the floor joists cinder block will work well at least every 8 ft in the center.

It would be good if you could build a small raised platform for the tent to sit on. It at least gets ya off the ground so less likely to soak water through. Pretty soon you'll have the subfloor in and have it dried in. And when you do the platform can be for a little outdoor patio or the floor of an outdoor bathroom/shower setup. So, it wouldn't be a waste of your time.
Keep your chin up and making progress forward.

It sound like you are a bit overwhelmed (from the Coffee with the Crockers post). Maybe you need to just close the road! Our family would love to be of whatever help we can -- but we are definitely not invading your homestead! If the weather goes bad -- and it may -- it would be nice if you could do some pre-building back by your family, then drive the stuff up on weekends or maybe every two week in the winter. Nice to see the foundation being beefed up! You'll be so glad you did when it gets to tornado season. I said it before but I'll say it again, those railroad ties look a lot like black locust. If they are, they will last a very long time.

Your doing a great job .68 yrs. ago my dad used railroad beams on a house he built. He covered them with black tar and it's still standing. If it was me I'd cover them in rubber I've used it for all kinds of things. I call it my all purpose weather proofing. I've only built sheds and Coop's I would say I would try to keep water running away from the foundation as possible.

I would take the 2x6 lumber and use it for your walls. Pore the concrete on the outside 4 post. Then use a string line for the remaining posts . Put 2x10s for the floor joist with a post in the middle. But 12 TUBES 4' below ground with adjustable jacks on 8"×8" beams would be best. If you do this you will have a firm foundation. God bless.

i built a redwood fence around our old house in Tahoe. I learned a good way to treat wood regulary to avoid it drying in the snow. use the old oil from your car after changing your oil. And to insulate under your tiny house (may help with support too?) use bails of hay. you will feel a cold draft from under house without something and bails of hay are cheap and can be used in your soil for mulch later.
nice tent. i wonder if its waterproofed? maybe have your tarp ready to throw over it if it's not

Your build is looking solid Jason!
I’m glad you put in the lag screws,
that’s almost imperative in this type of construction.
It’s also a great idea putting in the gusset plates, I didn’t mention them because lags are standard fastens for wood to wood connections then the plates.
It’s not a bad thing to over build your foundation other than an extra capital investment.
I dont think your “tiny house” will be going anywhere other than an earthquake or meteor impact!
    Great job! ❤️👍

Jason the only things I can think of are make sure you skirt it to keep the wind out from underneath. 2 reasons warmer and it will protect it from being moved by the wind. The other thing is put another row of braces/ nailers down the middle, so that when you put your decking down you have something to screw/nail to. Each thing you do makes it stronger. Coming along good, its alot of work. We were doing the same thing last winter. We weren't able to get our walls up right away, I went to the big box store and looked for mismake or what ever you want to call it paint. Made sure it was latex, helped protect it from the weather and was cheaper than tarps and less trouble in the wind. God Bless.

You are doing a great job! There are many ways to skin a cat. I have built many structures and the railroad ties will last for years and will be easy to replace with flatblock footers with blocks stacked on top. You have a good understanding of what you are doing. On the interior floor supports I would place square concrete pads on the ground and stack haydite blocks on top of them, easy peasy and very effective. You do not need the cross-bracing on the exterior because when you place plywood over the floor you create a diaphragm that will stabilize the structure in all directions. You have your priorities right and you know from whom your blessings come from and where your strength lies. Proud of you for your efforts and your testimony. Now keep those videos coming -- I love to watch em -- God Bless and be safe!

Jason, I just remembered something. My Grandparents had a large, 2 story farm house. It was built in 1930 and was on brick pillars. The pillars were about 2' sq. and about 6" apart. That house was solid and stood until 1975 when it was sold and moved away. Now, I don't know if the pillars were set down in concrete but that house lived through several tornadoes.

Where I live, there was a guy who built his house using multiple jacks underneath, just like the one you are using. He did it so he could always keep his house level.

I have railroad sleepers in my garden, used as paths and raised beds, still solid after 15 years.

railroad ties are full of nasty chemical that leach into your food. Please don't use them around a food garden. You can use them for paths or around flowers tho.

Hey Jason , you could cinder bulk around the corner post. It will incapsulate the railroad ties. Thus they can't rot out as fast . As well as help with supporting the tiny house.

For the concrete, do it with sonotubes and get under the frost line. If you lay the stuff on the ground and the ground heaves, it can destroy the building it has so much force. I messed up on our outdoor shower and extended it with a platform that rested on the ground. It heaved one winter (nothing for several winters), and damaged the shower framing. If you can, ask someone local about how deep the frost line is. I looked it up and Oklahoma hes both 10" and 20" depths listed.

Recommend concrete/cinder blocks -filled with concrete-next best thing to a perimeter concrete foundation, especially if you plan on keeping this place for the long haul and possibly adding on. I built my house 21 years ago and have never been sorry for going the extra mile on construction. Wishing you all the best!

I like the idea of concrete cylinders. There are metal braces with rebar that you can put in the wet concrete an bolt to the 2X6. Looking great!! God bless!

The X cross boards is a good idea because then you can attach some skirting to it around the perimeter. Also I would skip the cinder block and just do the tubes filled with concrete.
