Number 1: Spix's Macaw
The Spix's Macaw, not to be confused with the Blue Macaw, which is a species that is not in danger of extinction, is a species endemic to Brazil and the bird on which the movie Rio is based. It began to be considered extinct in wild state in 2018 and then officially declared in 2019.
The current population of this bird is about 160 individuals. The vast majority of them are in a conservation center in Rüdersdorf, Germany, where they try to reproduce 20 specimens a year.
There is optimism about the possible return of this species: in fact, in June of this year 2022, the Brazilian government reintroduced 50 Spix's macaws to their natural habitat.
Number 2: Guam Kingfisher
Some may recognize this bird from the “Songs of 14 Extinct Birds” video.
Like almost all native birds on the island of Guam, the Micronesian kingfisher population was decimated by the arrival of an invasive species on the island: the brown tree snake.
Today there are only about 200 Micronesian kingfishers left in the world, the vast majority in zoos and breeding centers in the United States. The population is growing slowly and there are plans to reintroduce them to some habitats, although the island of Guam is off the table until the snake infestation can be brought under control.
Number 3: Hawaiian Crow
Veterans of this channel probably already know that the number of species that have gone extinct in Hawaii is honestly devastating. Not only birds, but many other exponents of Hawaii's native flora and fauna have disappeared forever or are in danger of extinction.
Fortunately, the Hawaiian crow was lucky to escape, at least temporarily, the same fate that befell other species native to the island, such as the Kauai o'o, the Kama'o, the O'ahu, and the Po'o. -uli, among many others, many of which we do not even preserve their songs.
Currently there are about 115 individuals of this species in 2 breeding centers, but its conservation does not have a good future. The few attempts that have been made to reintroduce the raven to its natural habitat have ended with the ravens dying after a short time. On the other hand, the attempts to reproduce the ravens in the breeding centers have not given the expected results either. It is believed that inbreeding within this increasingly small group of specimens could be causing infertility in the species.
Number 4: Alagoas Curassow
The Ax-billed Curassow, also known by other names such as mitu, lesser curassow or Alagoas curassow, among others, is an endemic species from Brazil, specifically from the states of Alagoas and Pernambuco.
The deforestation of their habitats for the planting of sugar cane led to the extinction of this species in the wild. Currently, its population consists of about 130 individuals located in 2 private breeding centers in Brazil. An important part of this population has been hybridized with a close species, the tuberous curassow, to maintain greater genetic diversity and avoid inbreeding.
The reintroduction of this bird is complex, since its natural habitat has almost completely disappeared, so it would have to be released in new territories if one day it is to be seen in the wild again.
Number 5: Socorro Dove
The Socorro Turtle Dove is a species of turtle dove endemic to Socorro Island, Mexico.
This species is believed to have become extinct due to the presence of feral cats and grazing sheep which destroyed the dove's habitat.
Its current population is estimated at about 200 individuals distributed in several breeding centers in the United States, Germany, England and Mexico.
In 2013, the Socorro Turtle Dove returned to Mexico for the first time after being declared extinct in 1972. Six of them are at the African Safari in Puebla. The plan is to one day be able to reintroduce this species to its natural habitat on Socorro Island.

Cómo nosotros aplastamos el planeta con la contaminación y.... Extinguiendo hermosas especies de aves, mamíferos, anfibios y reptiles hasta llegar casi a nuestra extinción. Buen video 👌 una recomendación de video (si esque no lo as hecho)es un vídeo de anfibios extintos en estado silvestre.
Algún día tal vez será que nuestra voz esté archivada en un audio...Y sean las aves quienes escuchen nuestra voz extinta...
