Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. The fact that they lumped Ballroom and Drag history together is interesting.............................. Ballroom is it's own thing and continues to be a thriving artform and Drag/Crossdressing has it's own history. I'd say a lot of overlap happens but, they are both beautiful artforms that shouldn't be reduced to the same thing
But I also think that they kept them separate in this Mini documentary. They described them for what they are and made note of their similarities and differences. But I think each deserve a video of their own.
I love what happened in the last 10 seconds of this video. To show someone (a white man) calling it a “death drop”, which signifies someone who is only tied into the mainstream gay culture and has little to no knowledge of the underground/ballroom scene and its origins, to then switch to Dominique (a Black trans woman from ballroom) reject “death drop” and call the move what it truly is, which is a “dip”… shows you that there is still a divide in the information amongst our community and that the mainstream LGBTQ+ culture steals from the ballroom scene/underground scene widely populated by Black and Latine LGBTQ+ folks and convert it into something else that it’s not.
Sorry to break it to you. Ballroom is no longer underground. It's very much mainstream with multiple TV shows and movies. Ballroom and Drag is continually being learned by LGBTQ+ and Non.
@@bastioncory6740 There are a lot of things that are still considered to be underground or still has more to be discovered, regardless if it is on TV or not… and ballroom has also had non-LGBTQ+ people in it historically also.

Tbf the thing that is today is a death drop. Dip has a certain air and aura to it that could only be captured in a dip. But a death drop is just dropping down that doesn't require a lot of artfulness
Even after learning. THEY STILL CALL EM DEATHDROPS. But HEY. Let’s be honest… who, BESIDES AJA WHO IS IN BALLROOM, know how to truly do a dip and land it…. So in sense they are right. They do death drops. Not dips.

The history, the whole story, of drag queens AND ballroom culture took you 6 minutes. Either title your video something else or don't do this. To me, this came off as a very transparent attempt to be like "see, see we are cool and we love the gays. Yay Pride!". Six minutes! Ugh. I mean, do the video but call it a very superficial and brief introduction to drag queens and ballroom. Calling this the history of both is just insulting.
Gotta be thankful for small favors. Especially when a third of the country doesn't want anything LGBTQ+++ to exist. So proud of all Ru's girls who've taken the world by storm! @@wendybutler1681 Wendy with all due respect you’re only seeing the drag side of things. Drag history has had plenty of time to explain its origins but what the LGBT community takes from the most and knows the LEAST about is ballroom. Most white gays don’t even know the first thing about what ballroom has done for our rights and safe spaces. There are so many more shades to our community than just drag.
@@wendybutler1681 I mean do we though? Should we really be grateful for the bare minimum? Honestly, I wasn't even saying that this video wasn't good. I just absolutely abhor that they called this the HISTORY of drag queens and ballroom. They didn't mention SO many important things. I stand by that it is absolutely insulating to call this the "history".
Robin Williams did cross dress but, Drag is a very specific queer artform. I wouldn't consider Mrs. Doubtfire, Tootsie, or The Twins from white chicks as drag queens. Id considere them as deep disguises. Drag isn't really a costume. I'd say it's a heighten representation of the person. Someone like Lady Bunny doesn't stop sounding quirky and weird when she's out of drag but, Tyler Perry is not Madea out of drag yk?
Baby, Drag MUCH older than Mrs Doubtfire. People been doing Drag, and cross dressing even before there was a Bible chile! The LGBTQIA been in existence since before modern humans! And remember even Run Paul was doing Drag before Mrs Doubtfire!
@@thisisarandomfandom7444 Not true, DRAG is a Shakespearean term, meaning DRessed As As Girl. Ballroom started in the 60's re-appropriating drag as a femme queen category, specifically because of the discrimination found in the pageant scene as seen with Crystal Labeija. Drag became "queer" when contrasted against the christian heteronormative, but was born out of misogyny as women weren't allowed on stages. Straight male actors dressing as women is by definition drag.
First, everyone can do drag, either you’re a man, woman, trans, gay etc. Drag is a self expression you can wear a wig, costume,or any thing you’ve like to wear.
