I called out sick and then ran right into my manager at whole foods, store lol. I saw her first and I was in the tea area so I quickly picked up a box of chamomile tea.

I called out sick one day last year and as I’m walking home from the supermarket I saw my Department’s VP parked in front of a building near me. Dude doesn’t even live in the 5 boroughs and the office is in Manhattan. How the hell he ended up in my borough 😒

Sick days can also be mental wellness days. If you just need a break from your workplace to recharge and you have sick days, it's a good idea to take a day off. You'll come back refreshed and better equipped for work!
Mental wellness days don't apply in so many jobs/countries. It is so progressive/effective/efficient for employers to provide that allowance to their employees.

I’m triggered! Their privilege jumped out! 99% of these companies us regular folks work for do not give a DAMN about us okay?! Like at all. We are very replaceable & they make that clear! So if I’m slaving all year or for months and haven’t used my sick days yet what the hell yall want us to do with them? Waste them? Most bosses even encourage you to use em up seeing as they do not roll over into the next year and the company will survive!
If a place is offering 10 sick days a year & vacation days I can guarantee they ain’t being effected by you taking the sick days that they offered whether or not you’re really sick. Take a mental wellness day y’all or several, these companies ain’t worth your mental health!

Yes, you have every right to take your "sick days" and you should not be "punished" for them. However, many employers (not companies...the management in the companies) will somehow "punish" you for them by giving you a bad schedule for the next while etc. It's the *fear* of calling in sick that prevents people to do so, because scheduling etc. is outside of "employment law" guarantees. Middle management always assumes that if an employee calls in sick they are "abusing the privilege" of the set amount of sick days (yet they do not put in protocol to prevent abuse of the system like doctors notes for multiple missed shifts due to illness) - unfortunately they are right some of the time when it comes to temporary employees but they apply this to even people who have worked for the company for multiple years. This is because these types of jobs are often the "lower paying" and "non-skilled" jobs such as working at a grocery store, a gas station, or as a server.

For the sick leave - alot of companies will not allow staff to take annual leave if other staff are on leave or is a busy time of year (sometimes this can leave you with not having a holiday at all in a year). Sometimes you NEED to take that sick leave as the only way to have a break or day off for your own wellbeing. Its not about being grateful you have a job, its about caring about yourself
Mental health daysssss! You just gotta choose your moments, don’t take em when you know 2 other ppl in your department are off already or when it’s super busy and your boss isnt gonna care.
Most of yall have never had a traditional 9 to 5 jobs so you really cant speak for the masses. People needed mental breaks as well.

I remember seeing an email on the internet that an employee sent to her employer stating she was taking a much needed mental health day. Her employer was so supportive and even encouraged other employees to take their mental health seriously.

I am incredibly blessed at my job. We have one sick day a month. I also have 5 personal/mental health days per year and I’ve been working at my job for 11 years and I have five weeks holidays. I work in childcare. I am very grateful for what I have.

Mental health must be a priority. Our country needs to recognize the importance! It is crucial. That should be counted for "sick" time.

I work 40 hours a week at a call center, we don’t get paid time off until we work there for a year, I’ve requested days off because I needed a break, got denied. This job is stressful and we get points for calling out, showing up and leaving early, I think there should be mental well-being days per month if they choose and if they don’t, add it to the next month.

In South Africa, you get 10 paid sick days. You have to look after your employees... Its not meant to be abused... People need time to recover.

I get what Loni was saying at the end, but I feel like the distinction between sick days and vacation days is important. Vacation days are more planned in advance whereas sick days are a spur of the moment taking off.
I’ve called out of work and I absolutely told them I’m Taking A Mental Health Day Bye! And Ive just straight up said I’m not coming in today. Period. It’s there for me to use.
You have to say you have a family emergency and say that you need to go home as you're the caretaker of your sick family. Works all the damn time.

Well where I work, we can also use our sick days for PTO if we’re out of PTO, but we can’t use PTO for sick time.

I have 40 hours for my work. BUT I LEGIT only use mines for my 2 year old daughter! I use those sick pay hours to take my daughter to her appointments, when she IS sick and cannot go to daycare. I am a single mother so if she cannot go to daycare then I cannot go to work. SO I strictly save my hours for those emergencies!
Calm protests don't really make a difference though, an uproar gets attention.

I'm thankful to have worked a job where we could use sick days as personal days. I do think more companies should adopt that policy.
Company I worked for closed doors and hundreds of us were out of jobs just like that no prior warning. Didn't use many of my sick days/hours and obviously those hours were lost and not paid. Take care of yourself, is not worth it.

The one day I was planning to call out sick because I was actually sick was the day everyone called out because they wanted to go to the beach. It was me a manager 1 person on the grill and we had to call 2 people from another store because we were so understaffed. And she offered to let me leave early but I stayed late because she genuinely didn’t deserve to close on her own

Do you have a Human Resources department at your job? Someone from there should be able to give you a print out of the policy. It not, your supervisor will have that info.

Its also important to remember that for parents its extremely important to have sick days. If you have more than one child... You have to ne home with them. The amount of abusers is way less than the amount of legitimate adults that need those days. Well at least in my experience.
You can tell which one of them has never had a corporate job. You definitely need a sick day every now and then or you're left feeling burned out. As a result that can cause you to not perform as well. If corporate America didn't want us to take sick days, they wouldn't give them to us.

It depends on your salary. I don’t get paid by the hour, I get paid the same amount every month regardless of sick days, appts or vacation days.

At my job (Florida) we don't have sick days. If we called out sick they would take that time for our PTO :(
If they give you 10 sick days USE THOSE SICK DAYS!!!! You are entitled to those. This is an American privileged mindset to NOT use what the company by law has to give you. Use all your vacation days and all of your sick days. Life is more than work and a job shouldn’t expect you to come in if you’re not feeling well enough to come in. Regardless of the reason

Eh I work in South Korea. We generally do not get sick days. I have tonsillitis right now and literally had an IV in my arm this afternoon and am expected to work tomorrow 😂
You should be allowed to take your sick days whenever. You earned them by doing work for the company that offers them. We, as Americans, waste those days, and we are sicker and less productive as a country because we are forced to feel like we have to work instead of taking the earned paid time off.
