It's not that the beats were necessarily trash but those beats didn't fit any of the artists except for maybe lil tjay and rod wave. Also the rhythm of the guitar vs the drums while they weren't off at all, they had a rhythm that was really awkward to follow (talking specifically about the 24k goldn, mulatto, fivio, and calboy cypher) that's exactly why everyone thought it was gonna be trash just from the trailer.

I am Spartacus! I feel like they were the good people of the class that always get an a that I believe can move up a grade if they wanted. In my opinion not calboy or nle for me. I know people were going off for him not being on last years but it would have felt off if he was on last year. Feel like he would look like a high schooler compared to Megan, Tierra Whack, Roddy Ricch, Cordae, etc...

I feel like a lot of rappers that come to XXL are doing the same thing that a rapper years ago did something that wasn’t done before. For example: X was the first to cut the beat off and now rappers are doing it every year, Trippie Redd left and didn’t do no cypher and now rappers are doing it every year. I literally don’t get how XXL are allowing them to do this type of shit every year. But I’m still here watching the freestyles and cyphers cause I wanna see how the other freshman do their freestyle and cypher.

Great video. To answer your question I think the thing that sets Chika apart is that she has a more traditional sound, whereas most of the female freshmen in the past have been more tuned into the current wave. Some of her music reminds me of Lauryn Hill, with the more soulful production and the way she switches between singing and rapping. I also think she's the first female (or rapper in general) on xxl to be openly bisexual and talk about those themes in her music along with other personal topics.
I love cyphers where rappers will shout each other out which why I loved the chemistry in the Rico/Cordae/Blueface cypher last year: "they say he so classy/but i just wanna be poppin like rico nasty" and "Now my new girl claimin' that I'm too racist/
'Cause I don't really like green, only Bluefaces". It just puts a smile on my face when I hear that. So 24goldn shouting out everyone in his verse this year was really cool.

this year really surprised me, like they’re all rappers that aren’t that established yet (except polo and tjay i guess) like jack harlow and choppa are almost there and goldn had a couple tiktok songs, but generally they are kinda underground compared to past years, but the general quality of the cyphers was real high (NOT KEED), but everyone else was at least not painful to listen to so it was enjoyable
