The most common genetic cause of FTD is a variant in the C9orf72 gene. The most common genetic cause of ALS is also a variant in the C9orf72 gene. There is, therefore, significant overlap between FTD and ALS symptoms -- the disorders can even occur simultaneously in the same person. In this session, Dr. A. Campbell Sullivan and Julia Castro of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio will provide an overview of FTD-ALS, offer care strategies, and share the genetic implications of getting a dual diagnosis.
