I think the criticism was the point of the film. Evangelion was always about subverting expectations and fan service, and You Can(NOT) Redo accomplished that.
@@_GeneralMechanics_ Agreed to that. I love the fact 3.33 does not take Shinji’s action from last film lightly, the entire movie is the consequence of his action and I loved it

3.33 does only work together with 3.0+1.0, they almost contain a whole new story for themselves, while 1.11 and 2.22 stand together for themselves in the same way. All in all the rebuild series and especially the finale is a true masterpiece. Also love how the ending pissed off so many people, because it was an ending for everyone, almost a fan service ending lol
I agree about your “summer blockbuster” description of 2.0, which describes the fun I had. But I remember having just as much if not more fun during 3.0, because it didn’t just continue down the same path. That mid-series shift in tone is inherently evangelion. 3.0 takes a darker, more meditative turn, just like the show did once, but it still introduces new ideas like aging characters. In that sense, it feels familiar, but also different to anything that came before it. I think 3.0 is unique in that way. I’d like to see your initial thoughts after the global release of thrice upon a time. Give a month or so, then revisit all the rebuilds and maybe the franchise as a whole
5:54 What gives the fight a sense of weight is the use of camera movement, close-ups, and heavy objects to convey it. The issue doesn't lie within the animation, but the staging.

same. Admitedly i saw 1 2 and 3 all on the same day so i didnt have the waiting experience, but watching 1 and 2 i was so confused as to why shinji suddenly got a harem, why is there no tension, why do evas seem like action figures instead of the horror-like status they have in the original series. Everything seems like an evangelionless evangelion. And 3.0 answered those questions pretty energetically, and returned to a rawness of ideas that wasnt seen since the nge series
This one has really grown on me after all these years. Back when it came out, I was definitely on the hate train. But since I have grown to appreciate its insane, mean, beautiful self. Really, if it wasn't this weird, would it really be Eva?
Literally everything criticized about the movie is what the 3rd act of the show was like, it stopped being fun, the questions with no answers got worse and worse and it moved the story slowly. But I much prefer 3.0 to the 3rd act of the show just for Kawrou being in it more letting us have more of a connection to him and to Shinji before the “death” comes, making it more impactful than just the rushed 10 minutes the show gives it.
There’s something about 3.33 that I love but Idk what it is. Maybe it’s the setup for shinji’s character arc leading into the final movie & his friendship with kaworu that I find endearing about it.
3.0 has my favourite soundtrack of the rebuild films, Shiro Sagisu really outdid himself here, the score for the entire final battle (Return to ash - God’s gift) is perfect.
i still think the whole movie could be better had someone explained the whole situation to shinji and fill the 14 years gap, instead they gave him a very confusing and unclear info dump
It seems inadequate to not mention the naming of 3.0+1.0 more. 1.0 You are (not) alone. This is the core message of the original series and Anno's desire for his fans to avoid escapism and create/experience the world. We're given hints that this is not the same series when you see Kaworu reborn. 2.0 You can (not) advance. This is Anno giving the fans what they want: a romcom where both of the main girls suddenly start to fall in love with the protagonist. Mari Sue is the big hint that something is wrong here (a girl comes literally out of the sky, tells the protagonist the meaning of life/what he's looking for, and makes advances on him). Shinji literally goes full shonen, breaks the laws of physics to save his waifu and is left with emptiness. 3.0 You can (not) redo. A message that you can't redo your life if you waste it in escapism. Hell, Shinji chooses escapism and is literally comatose in space for 14 years. The metaphors aren't too subtle here. **SPOILERS** 3.0+1.0 Thrice upon a time. Note the exclusion of 2.0. Anno is saying this is the true form of Evangelion. The title hints at the series of loops: Manga, Anime, and Rebuilds (or you could go with Anime>Rebuilds>New world Shinji creates). My main problems with 3.0+1.0 (and 3.0) are -Mari doesn't revert to her proper age like all the other pilots -Her relationship with Shinji is extremely predatory if it is romantic -Kaji got done real dirty, no explanation -Misato doesn't treat Shinji like a human or ever explain anything to him -Gendo just giving up is a bit lame -Shinji saving Asuka and Rei but not Misato/Kaji seems inexplicable/lame (I think its shown he saves all the people killed/turned into headless EVAs by the N3I too) -Just showing the other characters in the background is pretty lame -The time skip in 3.0 is extremely jarring and well done but they never fill in the blanks as to what happened to Asuka/Misato/WILLE/Kaji in those 14 years to make the characters believable -Asuka and Kensuke just tell Shinji "other people are hurting too" without even trying to talk/listen to him when literally no one knows what its like to kill the only person who loved you and cause an apocalypse (other than sort of Gendo).
I think a lot of people would prefer no remake period, much less one that drags on for over a decade. NGE doesn't need one, it stuck the landing so why not just do something new?
@@LadCorazon the problem is, that there original NGE landed on completely different airport, then expected. The biggest "issue" (I hesitate to frame it as a problem) is that enough passed between 2.0 and 3.0 for a fifth rebuild movie to have been made. It isn't that the narrative is incoherent -- there are plenty of signs that the writers have a good picture of what happened in those 14 years and, more importantly, what happened immidiatly proceeding near third impact and everything that was going on in the background with Kaworu, mark 06 and the Adams. My take is the whole film is meant to be chaotic. As you're almost supposed to be as lost as Shinji. From his mental breakdown and mental health issues. To making decisions that have consequences with either not enough information, or the maturity and skills to tackle them. How those with trauma or mental health see those close to them either lose patience and move on or close themselves off, or sacrifice much of their own life so you may progress.
